I am 36 and had the Mirena inserted in 8/07 (two months after my 2nd child was born). Following the procedure, I had some mild cramping and spotting. I spotted on and off for a several weeks. Before the Mirena, my periods were always light and only lasted 4 or 5 days with no cramping. 6 months after the Mirena, my periods were gone. I had no discomfort or side effects with the Mirena. Three weeks ago, I had the Mirena removed. I experienced some spotting the following day and started my first period a few days ago. The period has been heavy with some clotting and mild cramping (this is unlike my normal periods before Mirena). I hope that since this is just my first period following the removal of the device that it will be atypical of future cycles. My husband and I hope to conceive as soon as possible, but were told to wait until I have had three cycles so my uterine lining has time to thicken. I am sorry to hear about others' scary experiences with the Mirena and hope that things get better for them. For me, the Mirena experience has been a good one...just ready to get on the baby train soon! Hope this helps someone.

I took yaz for maybe two weeks. after one week my breast blew up a cup size. they were so swollen! then i started noticing i was gaining weight but my diet hadn't changed. i started to swell all over within the next week. but what made me quit taking this pill was that i started getting these sharp intense pain in my upper abdominal region. it would come and gnaw at me for like 2-5 seconds then it would just go away. there was also like this temperature sensation anytime i would eat or drink anything. i've been off of it now for 5 days! i still have not got my period, my breast are still swollen, and my stomach pains are still there. i know im not pregnant, because i haven't had any sex! when is this going to get out of system or has it done something to me? i would imagine if you skip your period in one day and you can get pregnant in that one day... the pill should be out of your system! anyway- anyone else have this same situation?

i am 37 and I have had a history of heavy periods that have made me anemic over the past years. I had a tubaligation in my late 20's so this is not for birth control for me. my main symptoms were extreme fatigue, vertigo, depression (only during my periods) and isolation. i had mirena inserted Dec 2008. after the painful cramps and heavy period that immediately followed for over 2 weeks, i thought everything was going to be okay--that i would have very light or no periods at all. Since that time i have experienced hair loss (a huge breakage spot on the crown of my head--the size of a saucer), dark acne bumps on my face that won't heal properly, hair under my chin, painful acne on my back, increased appetite, decreased ability to lose weight--despite exercising vigorously 3-4 times a week. On top of that...all my previous symptoms are back! I am dealing with a period that has caused me to have extreme fatigue and depression. all i want to do is go to sleep until my period is over. the sad thing is i came to this site before i made my decision for mirena. I trusted my doctor in believing that these side effects were not typical. My desire was to have a uterine ablation--that's where they "lightly burn" the uterine lining and stop your cycle. my doc gave me sooo many reasons of this not working. the main one was it only last 5 years...i am going to go to a different doc and insist i try this...i don't like the mirena and i wish i had listened to your posting a long time ago. good luck to all of you and i hope you keep putting your comments here--good, bad, or indifferent.

Hi - I posted a couple of days ago (around the 15th). I had the Mirena taken out yesterday. Yes, still bleeding. Yes, with medium to large-sized clots. Oh, I forgot this side affect also - for some time when I had it in, I had a tinging or numb-like feeling passing through my top lip - I thought I was going crazy at first but I realized it had been happening more and more and it wasn't my imagination. I've had this also since it was removed; not as often though.

Could it be that we are the "3%" that has a problem with this IUD??!! I am following up with a second opinion with another OBGYN because I was concerned that the radiological tech said my uterine lining was "very thick" and my friend's mom (who is a nurse) asked right away if the doctor was doing a D & C...(!) Any suggestions or ideas or comments???

I had the Mirena inserted in July 2008 during my period (as I was told it had to be). I was also told to give my body three months to "get used to" it. Where should I start? I had some cramping, followed by contractions five days later - yes, I said contractions (ladies with babies, we know the difference between cramps and contractions); I had itchiness outside (vulva) and inside which was a yeast infection that was treated twice - once with OTC medication and then with antibiotics. My period ended in July; when I thought I was getting a period in August, it started as that thick brownish gunk. It was like this for 4 days; then I started bleeding, thinking I was gettting a normal period. Well, since August, the bleeding would come and dissipate - not totally go away - until within the last couple of weeks (since the end of August - beginning of September) it has become heavier. This is not normal or natural. I have bled through a pantyliner. I bled through to my pants using a tampon and maxipad. I've had to change the tampon and pad within one hour. I've had bleeding that is bright red followed by small clots and then one huge one (approx. 6 inches long, and 1.5 -2 inches wide). I repeatedly called the OBGYNs office throughout this ordeal; they have told me to give it time, this normal, "well this is better than the alternative - what would you do (re:pregnancy)" and have at times reacted as if I'm overreacting. Last week I went there to express the concerns, to have a checkup, and to express that I want it removed; the PA could find the strings and wrote me a script for a sonogram. But before I left the office, when I mentioned that I wanted this out, she said, "You really don't want to get this out - just give it some time- give it another 3 months - really, you don't want to take this out."
I went for the sono on Saturday and the tech asked when I had my last period. When I mentioned a brief synopsis of what has been happening, she mentioned that my uterine lining is very thick. I questioned, "Shouldn't it be thinning out if I'm having my period?" I also mentioned that it should be thinning out because of the Mirena. She couldn't afford any answers in regards to the Mirena but did confirm that during a period the lining thickens up and then thins out - sheds - but that mine was very thick.
Ok, now I'm totally freaked-out. I hope this isn't anything serious.

mirena DOES NOT prevent ovulation!! meaning you will still ovulate, but the sperm and egg cannot implant themselves which in turn will cause a miscarriage!! This is the same for all iud's, For some unknown reason docs will not tell you this, but my doctor did and strongly advises not to use iuds!! You will get pregnant! You may think your having a heavy period but really you could be passing a dead fetus! Sorry to be so blunt, please do research before you choose this method of birth control

I LOVE NUVARING!!! I've been using it for over a year, usually keeping it in for a month then replacing it with a new one to avoid having a period. I sometimes have some spotting at the end of the month; then I just take out the ring and have a full period and put in a new ring one week later. I have none of the problems with mood swings that others have posted - on the contrary, I no longer have PMS symptoms.

However, during those rare menstrual periods, I sometimes pass a few thumbprint-sized pieces of an unusual MEMBRANOUS BROWN TISSUE-LIKE SUBSTANCE (cap'd to draw attention). No other symptoms.

Has anyone else experienced this? My nurse practitioner hasn't had any other patients mention it and she can't think of what it could be (uterine lining??).
