My experience with the NuvaRing thus far has been disastrous. I was prepared to put up with the ruined underwear from unexpected menstruation but today whilst sobbing uncontrollably on the freeway with my husband gasping at me helplessly was enough. He actually was the one who suggested that it may be the ring and after reading the accounts of other women I am glad it is not me (and so is he). I actually just read some accounts to him and he was looking at me with a "told you so" look on his face. I have been in remission from clinical depression for a year and a half now, and these feelings I am having whilst on the ring are those of depression. I was seriously scared that possibly I had slipped back into a depressive state, but only a few weeks ago I was happy with my life and safe and stable. I am also ANGRY at everything. Again, something I was really concerned about- that is totally not the person I am. I am also having periods of dizziness and loss of consciousness which I thought was dehydration, but I could not seem to fix it. I am sure this is an effective form of birth control for some women, but I would just like to let you all know that constant vaginal bleeding, depression and thoughts of no self worth, anger, dizziness and pain are not worth it. Not in my experience.

I have been on NuvaRing for over 3 years now. When I first went on birth control I was using the ortho evra patch however, I was suffering from side effects such as nausea, always feeling sick and tired. I eat a lot and everything but while using the patch I felt TERRIBLE eating the blandest toast. I am not a heavy drinker but even one cocktail would cause me to be extremely sick. I switched to NuvaRing and since then I was back to my normal self. Not only that but while on the NuvaRing my period is like CLOCKWORK, I know exactly when I am getting my period. I did not experience any breakthrough bleeding and my periods are extremely light. Overall the switch to NuvaRing was so worth it.

First of all, a big thanks to all of you who have shared your experiences. I am a biochemist, with a background in pharmaceutical research...I chose the Mirena IUD after careful consideration of it's active ingredient, Levonorgestrel. The side effect profile seemed pretty acceptable...until I started to experience nearly ALL of them...I am 33 years old and had the Mirena IUD placed in October of 2008 after the birth of my second child in June of 2008. The initial reaction was to be expected...cramping, a little spotting etc...nothing to be alarmed about. I still have yet to have a period (which I really don't miss so no problem there) I never gave a second thought to this until now...for the past month or so (coinciding with the weening process, since I have been nursing the entire time, I believe the side effects were not as noticeable) I have been experiencing the following (that may or may not be related to Mirena as my OBGYN has so adamantly pointed out, but after reviewing your posts I'm willing to bet they're connected) and are in order of occurrence: Major, but temporary, hair loss after 2 months or so; Major respiratory infection lingering over a month with difficulty breathing, tightness and pain in the chest at around 6 mos; And in the past month, several instances of motion-like sickness/ nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, major impatience/ mood swings, loss of appetite (pregnancy-like symptoms...yep, I was thinking man I'd be pretty pissed if I was that 0.01% pregnant statistic), and as of this past weekend, my first aurora migraine with tunnel vision and serious nausea and vomiting, to the point where I went to Urgent Care...who referred me to the ER...who wants to perform a battery of tests including a head CT. I have an appointment with a trusted GP tomorrow to discuss possible root causes...but it is to coincidental that so many women are experiencing these same symptoms! I am certainly leaning towards having this removed. CAN THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE HAD THIS REMOVED PLEASE RESPOND IF YOUR SYMPTOMS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED OR WERE RESOLVED!!! THANK YOU!
These side effects seem to go well beyond a 5% rate of incidence according to all of you who have reported. I will investigate further and keep everyone posted. As someone who is highly experienced in the pharmaceutical industry, you bet your a$$ I'm going to get to the bottom of this! Good luck ladies!

I have an appointment to get the Mirena put in next Wednesday, but reading all these side effects that some of you have had, I don't think I'm going to get it. I am proned to yeast infections and uti's especially. Anyway, I went to the Mirena website and I found this at the bottom. Maybe you all could write or call this number to tell them about the negative side effects that you're having.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT MIRENA®:
Only you and your healthcare professional can decide if Mirena is right for you. Mirena does not protect against HIV or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Candidates for Mirena have had a child. Mirena is not appropriate for women who are or may be pregnant; or who may have a distorted uterine cavity; acute genital infections including pelvic inflammatory disease; cancer of the cervix, uterus, or breasts; unexplained vaginal bleeding; or acute liver disease or tumors (benign or malignant). In rare cases, perforation or embedment may occur. Mirena may become completely or partially dislodged. In the rare event you think you're pregnant, contact your healthcare professional without delay to be evaluated for ectopic pregnancy. Ovarian cysts may occur and typically disappear. Persistent cysts should be evaluated. Missing periods or irregular bleeding is common in the first few months, followed by shorter, lighter periods.

You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA.

I can't believe that so many doctors don't know about the side effects of Kenalog and/or don't advise their patients about them. It's unbelievable!!! My father was a very well-known rheumatologist in Puerto Rico (he passed away in 1994) and I worked with him for many years. And one of the first things I learned about Kenalog (and all corticosteroids) were its possible side effects, the most common ones being redness or pain at the injection site, headache, menstrual period changes and/or post-menopausal bleeding, easy bruising and/or bleeding, swelling of the ankles/feet, persistent weight gain, puffy face, unusual hair growth and thinning of the skin, among many others. In case you want to learn more about this, you can visit ******.

I myself am post-menopausal although I'm only 51, and haven't had my period for over two years now. Two weeks ago I got a shot of Kenalog for my back pain and about three days later started spotting, and right now I'm having full vaginal bleeding. I don't worry cause I know it was the Kenalog, but since I have an appointment on the 29th with my gynecologist, she'll tell me if anything has to be done.

Anyway, I hope to have helped the soooo many women who have soooo many doubts about Kenalog. Take care, friends! TutiMM from Florida

P03.16
Idiosyncratic Reaction to Mirena IUS A Cause for Early Removal - Case Report
Sivarajan, S; Aung, SN; Haloob, R
Basildon University Hospital, UK
Background: The discontinuation rate for mirena IUS was around 40%. The common
causes for premature removal were excessive bleeding, spotting, infection and pain.
We all are aware of less systemic effects compared to other progestational agents, We
would like to highlight the importance of exaggerated minerolocorticoid activity in the
form of increased fluid retention and electrolyte changes with spontaneous changes in
weight and generalized edema following mirena IUS which result in early removal.
In our two cases, we highlight the exacerbation of well documented side effects of
progesterone which leads to premature removal of MIRENA IUS.
In my first case,Twenty four hours after insertion of mirena IUS she noticed ankle
swelling, 48 hours later swelling involved the whole lower limb and worse over the
following few days.In addition to heavy vaginal bleeding. At the end of the first week,
she put on weight three quarters of a stone (10.5 lb).Mirena was removed at surgery
after 8 days of insertion and she developed continuous diuresis and profuse sweating
within 24hrs of removal her weight went down by 7lbs.
In the second case ,following mirena IUS insertion Three months later her periods
improved a lot , but she suffered considerable weight gain(7lb) and mood swings. So
she decided to have her mirena removed and opted for Novasure ablation.
Conclusion: Although abdominal pain, peripheral oedema, nervousness are well
documented side effects of Mirena,we couldn’t find in literature of fulminant oedema
and water retention after 24 hours of Mirena insertion. This profound acute side effects
might be due to acute idiosyncratic immune reaction of to progesterone

Has anyone had vaginal bleeding because the NuvaRing irritated your vagina? I had a little bit of break-thru bleeding earlier in my cycle but now the blood looks more like it is coming from something else...I have used a diaphram before and that would really irritate my vagina during sex, I would lightly bleed for the next day or two. My bleeding now looks a lot like my vagina is really irritated similar to using the diaphram. I've had some mood swings--mostly deep lows and being incredibly impatient/irritable which I'm normally not like. Lots of breast tenderness, too. My gyno swore that the NuvaRing with finally be the BC that would work for me (I've been a numerous types of pills) but I've been on it for two months and so far things are not looking too promising...

Has anyone who has been on Yasmin for more than two years noticed post-sex vaginal bleeding? I'm 24 and I've been seeing the same guy for three years, been on Yasmin for two and a half years, and all of a sudden (please forgive me being graphic), when we have sex in the doggystyle position, I start to bleed. It's only a little bit and it doesn't continue. There is no pain.

The only thing I can think of is that having been on Yasmin for an extended period of time has led to this side effect.

Otherwise everything is fine. I haven't become pregnant, my cycles are regular, I haven't experienced mood issues or the dreaded recurring yeast infections that one poor girl described. The bleeding freaks my boyfriend out and dampens the mood, to say the least.

Has anyone else experience this? Please let me know, I'm hoping to eliminate the most likely causes of this symptom so I can figure out if it's my body or what....

Injected once with kenalog, I had no symptoms until 1 month later. I started spotting and the vaginal bleeding is getting heavier, and this is not my period. Recently have been having severe headaches, stomach upset. When does this stuff leave your body? How long do these side effects last? Not getting much help from my doctor, never told the side effects could reveal themselves so much later and definitely not told how long they might last. Please someone help me.

Been on Lipitor for a little over one month. Feel very lethargic and wiped out. Not sleeping/odd dreams. Very tired upon waking. Pain in my back, went to urgent treatment center..blood pressure was 202/98 and had an abnormal EKG. Taken by ambulance to ER. Developed stomach pain that will not go away, acid reflux/indigestion, leg pain, flatulence, pain in my chest and a feeling that something is sitting in my chest, vaginal bleeding since October 22, dry mouth, sweating, joint pain and swelling. I was given birthcontrol pills to try to stop the flow. Hasn't worked yet. I took lthe last pill I had 2 days ago and feel better today than I have felt in a long time. I looked up the side effects of Lipitor and discovered that what I am experienceing seems to be directly as a result of this medicine which is the only new thing that I have added to my routine.

I am a 62 yr old post menopausal woman. In June I received my first Kenalog shot in my knee, and had relief from pain by the next day. In August I was having the same pain again and a different ortho doc gave me another injection in my knee. 10 days later I started having vaginal bleeding, and bled for 9 days. I was told by the doctor who gave me the 2nd shot of Kenalog to follow up with my primary care doc. I had a negative pap test, but the pelvic ultrasound was abnormal and I was referred for an endometrial biopsy. My results of the biopsy showed no atypical cells and no abnormality at all. I've been told by the gynecologist that it was most likely the Kenalog shot that made me bleed. I had not had vaginal bleeding for 15 yrs previously.

I had two cortisone shots in my foot for relief from plantar fascitis. My doctor never warned me of the side effects, nor told me the name of what I was getting (just "cortisone")! I've had THREE periods in ONE month! That is *very* unusual for me, so unusual that it scared me into researching the shots I'd been given. Guess what!? Kenalog...also known as "triamcinolone acetonide."

What's worse is that I'd had numerous (30-40) shots of the SAME STUFF in my scalp for psoriasis in between the time I had the shots in my foot...neither doctor bothered to ask me if I was currently taking anything else, or had any other injections, or at least tell me about the side effects!

I am pumped so full of this stuff that I am scared I'll never stop bleeding. Headaches, back pain, abdominal cramps, abnormal vaginal bleeding, and a yeast infection to top it all off!

BEWARE OF KENALOG!!

I HAD BEEN ON 80MGS. OF PREDNISONE FOR TREATMENT OF SEVERE SORIASIS. IT WORKED WONDERS FOR THE SKIN CONDITION. , I WAS SPEEDING MY BRAINS OUT , AND GOING 100 MILES PER HOUR. IT WAS SOMEWHAT EUPHORIC. I AM 45 YEARS OLD AND HAVE BEEN IN MENOPAUSE SINCE MY LAST CHILD WAS BORN 5 YEARS AGO. AFTER I TAPERED OFF THE PREDNISONE OVER A MONTH PERIOD... I STARTED TO HEMMORAGE. I HAD UNCONTROLLABLE VAGINAL BLEEDING, BLOATING , PAIN, MOOD SWINGS, DEPRESSION, ETC. THE BLEEDING DID FINALLY SUBSIDE AFTER BEING OFF THE DRUG FOR 10 DAYS. HOWEVER , NOW THE SKIN IS DETERIORATING, AND THE JOINT PAIN IS EXCRUCIATING. I CAN BARELY WALK. I AM A DANCE TEACHER, AND THIS IS BECOMING DEBILITATING. I ALSO HAVE A CANCER HISTORY, AND THYROID DISEASE. IT WAS AND IS ROUGH. I GUESS I HAVE A CHOICE BETWEEN HAVING HORRID, DISGUSTING SKIN ( AND UNABLE TO GET A PUBLIC JOB) AND BEING EMBARRASSED ALL THE TIME AND DEALING WITH THE VERY DIFFICULT SIDE AFFECTS OF THIS MEDICATION. I AM HOPING FOR A BETTER ALTERNATIVE. THE SUFFERRING IS UNBEARABLE. LIBBY B.

I am post menapausal. I took one kenalogshot to help my asthma . It didn't appear to help much but I did not notice any side effects. A month after taking it I was in a car accident and started to have vaginal bleeding which the Dr put down to the shock of the accident, not the Kenalog. It is one month later. I am still bleeding heavily for no apparant reason. I am stering to have tests which do not show any apparant problem.

About a month ago I was prescribed SMZ/TMP Double-STR Tab MPC for an infection after 3 other antibiotics failed. After a few days I noticed that every night I was having a sweaty fever and chills. I eventually stopped taking the medication for fear that it was a reaction caused by the sun. This past week I noticed signs of my infection returning. Since I had nearly a full prescription left over, I decided to self medicate for that evening with intentions of calling the doctor the next day. About an hour after taking the tablet I felt this burning/tingling almost like an itchy feeling all over my body. Then came severe abdominal cramping with diarrhea, vomiting, and even vaginal bleeding. I was unable to sleep and noticed my face and lips had swollen to a grotesque state by the early morning hours. It was the most horrifying and painful night of my life.

I have been on Yasmin for 2 weeks now and at 22 yrs old this is my first bc pill. I have literally not thrown up since I was a small child until the last 2 weeks. Now I am vomitting for no reason and often feel sick in the stomach. I also have a weird rash under my breast, I have vaginal bleeding and can't wear my contacts. I sleep 10 hours a night and still fall asleep in my college classes. Is any of this the normal cycle to adapting to the pill???

I had total loss of appetite and a constant headache when I first start Mobic but those side effects have subsided. I have pretty severe constipation and feel dehydrated frequently. My face has broken out (I'm 44) and I have frequent vaginal bleeding. Not heavy bleeding, but often. Joint-wise - I feel TONS better so I'm hoping that these side effect subside like the loss of appetite and headache did.

I share the story of many others on this site...

Severe fall allergies, despite years of ineffective perscription allery pills and steroid nasal sprays. Nothing seemed to work. A doctor at my University health clinic suggested the shot (actually Triamcinelone). I've been getting the shot (now Kenalog) every September for 10 years, and absolutely love it. In fact, my wife and kids can't wait for me to get it, because allergies turn me into a grumpy, tired monster! Over the counter pills make me extremely sluggish and irratable.

10 years, no dents or headaches! Just pure relief... if you can't find a doctor who will give it to you, keep searching. I've also been able to convince a doctor or two by suggesting that I will only need 1 low dose shot. Many are hesitant (in my opinion) because they're afraid you'll keep coming back to ask for more. Just 1 a year does it for me. Hope this helps.

After taking Guafin I felt cold, clammy, faint, and then had vaginal bleeding with cramps. I felt so poorly that I was lying on the bathroom floor with a wet washcloth on my head. My head and neck felt a lot of pressure, too. Very scary. Try to avoid taking this medicine if at all possible.

I have been menopausal since 1999. I had 80mg of Kenalog injected in my lumbar region. 12 days later I felt like I was getting my period and have had vaginal bleeding ever since. I have cramping and bright red blood bleeding. Anyone else had this effect? The doctor and nurse practicioner laughed at me when I said I thought the Kenalog caused it.
