I haven't found Mirena to be very invasive so far. I got it put in after my daughter was born and since then my periods have been few and far between, but I attribute some of that to breastfeeding the first six months. I have had the Mirena in for almost a year and the only thing I notice is that sometimes I feel moody and hungry and lethargic like I'm about to menstruate but then nothing happens. I haven't had weight gain problems and I do fight off some acne on my chin and sides of my face but I don't know if that has to do with the Mirena- I haven't always had the greatest skin to begin with. I got pregnant because I wasn't on the pill or anything, everything else before this has made me psychotic. Any contraceptive you use will have its drawbacks because you are messing with your physiology and biology and everything. This is the best thing I've tried- so far it hasn't been problematic enough to consider taking it out. I think I am a case of very mild side effects with this method. It sounds like some people's bodies are more sensitive and attack the device as a foreign object in their system. My body is less fussy apparently

I got Mirena in May 2009 after I had my second baby in February. I really like that I don't have to think about daily or monthly BC, but I hate the side effects. I've gained almost 10 pounds since May, and I leak vaginal discharge like crazy. Every morning when I wake up, I can feel it pool out of me and it does it at other times too --- so annoying. I also was enjoying the fact that in the first month of having it, I did not get a period. But that soon changed --- I now get periods that I can't even call periods; it's either spotting or heavy discharge tinted w/ blood and it comes and goes as it pleases, there is no pattern and no warning. I'm not sure what I'll do at this point. My GYN said it can take up to a year to regulate, but if it stays like this, I may switch to something else.

I got mirena birth control in June of 08 after I had my first daughter and I bled and bled and bled for over a year. I have had headaches, weight gain, that I can't lose for some reason. I'm overly tired all the time. I hardly have any energy. I have major mood swings. I'm depressed sometimes for no specific reason. It's uncomfortable to have sex. Most of the time i don't even want to have sex because my sex drive is very very low. I have had excessive amounts of white sometimes with a yellowish tint vaginal discharge. Abdominal pain, I've had some hair loss. But mostly just a lot of discharge. I haven't had any itching or anything with the discharge to indicate an infection except for very little yellowish tint to the excessive amount of discharge. But I have never bled so much or had so much discharge until I got the mirena birth control. I went to see my gyn ant the bleeding and he tried to give me bc piles to regulate my bleeding but my bleeding was regular my period came and went when it was suppose to but in between that time of he month I was still bleeding. I have finally stopped bleeding and it is now aug. 09 but I still have all the side effects above. I don't Know ether I should get it removed or not. And I'm only 18. I shouldn't be having these kinds of problems.

Hello,
I've tried a bunch of different brands and types of BC's in the past, and none ever worked well with me... then i started Yasmin. It worked wonders. helped my acne, cramps, length of my period etc... i was on it for about 1 year. i stopped BC and had my son (Nov 18 09) .. my doc told me to get back on the pill about 2 months after my son was born and i have been on it since.. lately I've been noticing that I'm not me anymore... i can't remember the last time I've felt like myself.. depression, lack of motivation, hopelessness, i get irritated over the stupidest things, LOW sex drive, LIKE NONE AT ALL, lack of confidence, loss of appetite, loss of hair ongoing 9 months after birth and getting worse, bad menstrual cramps, bad acne, dark colored urine, strange vaginal discharge before my period, longer periods, migraines, mood swings, irrational thoughts and outburst, dizzy spells, blurred (black) vision upon standing, seeing spots and light headed, etc... i attributed all of this to postpartum hormonal imbalance, stress, etc... but I'm now considering the fact that maybe Yasmin is doing this to my body... so i will stop the pill or switch it, my next appointment is only in a month so no sex till then, but yet again my libido is completely gone so that will be no problem... (ahh my POOR BF) lol
all this to say that if it was postpartum depression, my son wouldn't be the only reason i get up in the morning, i wouldn't get up at all...
i know that this isn't postpartum depression... I'm positive that it's Yasmin causing all this i know at least that some of it is..
What i don't understand is that we all have a bunch of docs that ignore us and our bodies.. this isn't only happening to on person this is a lot of people who have had similar and sever reactions to this pill, it should really be taken off the market, or at least doctors should warn us about the "other" side effects...
anyways I'm DONE with this pill and will tell all my friends.
it at least feels good to get this off my chest... it's hard to talk about this stuff to people who are close to you...
All this sounds crazy but makes sense at the same time...
thank god i found this site!

I copied and pasted the Adverse reactions below from drug.com...how is it that they list all the side effects we are all having but when i look through the mirena brochure none of this is listed....sounds a little shady huh?
Adverse Reactions
The most serious adverse reactions associated with the use of Mirena are discussed above in the WARNINGS and PRECAUTIONS sections. Very common adverse reactions (>1/10 users) include uterine/vaginal bleeding (including spotting, irregular bleeding, heavy bleeding, oligomenorrhea and amenorrhea) and ovarian cysts. Other adverse events are listed below using MedDRA (9.0) terms. Adverse reactions reported by 5% or more of clinical trial subjects include:
Abdominal/pelvic pain
Vaginal discharge
Nausea
Headache
Nervousness
Vulvovaginitis
Dysmenorrhea
Back pain
Weight increase
Breast pain/tenderness
Acne
Decreased libido
Depressed mood
Cervicitis/Papanicolaou smear normal, class II

I am SO glad I ran across this site.I am not crazy! My Mirena was put in about 3 months ago after my gyno finally put it together that my birth control pills were causing menstrual migraines. I will say the Mirena helped with the headaches, but lately I have not felt like myself. I have gained 10 lbs. in 3 months (even though I have been eating well and exercising more to avoid this side effect), my hair is oily, I have little dry itchy patches on my skin, fatigue, joint pain, no interest in having sex (after we do have sex sometimes I get horrible cramps and pain, like when the Mirena was inserted) I am super moody, and have anxiety/depression/anxiety problems, bloated almost constantly, and I feel like I can't focus or concentrate on anything! I called my gyno this morning because I do not want to feel like this anymore, and told her about all my symptoms. The only thing that makes sense to me is that Mirena is causing all my problems, since I never had any of them until I got it put in. The gyno tells me its not Mirena, that it definitely does not cause all that, and to get my thyroid checked because that is my problem. However, after reading all these stories, I am convinced that it is Mirena, and I am definitely getting it out. There is no way so many women can only have Mirena in common and have the same problems, even if they are not listed as side effects on the Mirena brochure.
So I am definitely getting it taken out, but I am curious about experiences after having it removed. How long till you feel like yourself again? Do the side effects go away quickly? Does it hurt more or less than getting it put in? Does the weight come off easily?
Hopefully this post helps someone as much as the other posts helped me. Thank you all for taking the time to post.

WOW! I have to agree with most of you, i recently got the MIRENA in March 2009, and my FREGGIN VAGINAL DISCHARGE had an odor to it, which i came down with BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS! UGH! i thought i received an STD when my discharge started to stink. But i went to the DR, and got treated for it. THANK GOD it was JUST Bacterial vaginosis. BUt now i noticed a creamy freggin discharge, almost chalky color. and i HATE IT!! TOP THAT OFF, i was spotting for a WHOLE month AND A HALF!

With my NuvaRing experience, at first it was all great! I was loving the convenience, it seemed perfect for me and then the side effects started. At first it was nausea. Then came the vomiting. NOW I am experiencing back pain, abdominal pain, severe fatigue, vaginal discharge, tingling in my finger tips and toes. I have only been on the Ring for 2 months but KNOW I have already gained weight. My mid-section is bloated and I FEEL pregnant but no that I am not. Mine is coming out tonight.

I have been taking Yaz for six months now, and I'm stopping after I finish this pack. I've been on it this long because I thought at first the side effects caused by it were just the beginnings of aging for me (I'm 25), but the acceleration of my problems has been so noticeable that I can't be in denial any more! Basically, here's what I have:
-thinner hair that comes out more easily and doesn't grow back as fast (it would be nice if this were restricted to "unwanted" hair, but this actually includes my eyelashes, eyebrows and head hair, which have all gotten noticeably lighter and thinner)
-CELLULITE, which I never had before...not only on my thighs but on my bum and CALVES, I didn't even realize it was possible to get cellulite there!
-spider veins on my upper thighs, again, never had this before
-very decreased sex drive
-thinner skin with less elasticity
-memory problems
-much increased vaginal discharge
Now, it's not all losses...my boobs are bigger when I actively take the pills, and my skin has become less acne prone...but is all that other stuff really worth it??? I think not.

I have had the mirena for about 2 months now. Since having it inserted I have had a period the entire time. It may be heavy for a couple of days and then light and at other times I spot. Any how I have to wear a panty liner at all times just in case because I never know when to expect it. I have had this foul vaginal discharge that I can't seem to get rid of. I get headaches all the time and I'm always tired. Too tired to even be in the mood for sex. Why, just this past Saturday I purchased some Nympho Niagra at a sex party its suppose to help put you in the mood.... lol. Does anyone have any idea how long the bleeding will last? And what about this foul smell? I have never had either and its really starting to bother me to the point where i'm ready to have it removed. I thought this was suppose to be something good, ie shorter and lighter periods. Well the past 2 months for me is like hell. I just need some honest advice.
Thanks!

Hi there, I am glad I found this website too. I had the mirena fitted in 2005 and since then have been on anti-depressants twice! I have a 3 year old and 5 year old and put most of my symptoms down to being a mother of 2 small children. I am constantly irritable, short tempered, ratty, anxious, can't relax at all, stressed out, etc. I also have constant muscle pains in my hips and top half of both my legs, with bloated feelings in my stomach. I am shattered constantly and struggling to feel enthusiastic about things lately. My symptoms have definitely got worse over the last 12 months. I also feel "tremmorings" of my heart, where it feels like its beating too fast, or almost stopping. I have constant vaginal discharge and often slight spotting after sex. My smear test has just come back all clear, although I had convinced myself it wouldn't be because of these symptoms. I am sure now after reading all these posts that all these symptoms are linked to the coil. I feel so cross now, that the last 3 years have been so bad, possibly as a result of this thing in me! I am too scared to have it removed though as I bled so much having it put in. I would lve to hear from people who have had theirs out, how much did it hurt and how much did you bleed? Many thanks.

Hi there. I am so glad I found this website too. My mirena was fitted in Dec 2005. Since then I have been on anti-depressants twice. I have terrible mood swings, am constantly ratty with my two young sons and my husband, I feel like I am constantly stressed out and definitely feel like I can't relax. I am always shattered. I feel my heart "tremmoring" quite a lot. My hips and top half of my legs ache most days. I feel bloated quite a lot too, like the feeling before a period, or even slight labor pains. I have a constant vaginal discharge, and have slight bleeding after intercourse. I had convinced myself I had cancer from some of these symptoms, but have just had smear test results and all is fine. So it must all be down to the mirena. The only thing is though I am SOOOOOO scared of having it removed, frightened of the pain and of the bleeding immediately after! I would like to hear from people who have had it removed, did it hurt and was the blood loss severe?

I am 23 years old and I had Mirena inserted November 18, 2007, about 5 months after the birth of my second daughter. I have had it in a little over a year now, and I hate it. It's actually funny cause as I sit and type this message, I am having overwhelming cramps, that like someone else stated in this article, are comparable to labor pains. Right around November of 2008 I started having severe back pain from out of nowhere. After numerous visits to the E.R. I finally got my doctor to send me to a specialist, and I am now taking a muscle relaxer, along with an anti-inflammatory. I also have diarrhea, along with vaginal discharge that has been non-stop since I got this thing. Along with the numerous bacterial infections that I have had, I went to see my doctor about 2 months ago, and I had a pap-smear done. The doctor informed me that my pap was abnormal, and then proceeded to send me to yet another specialist. I go to that appointment next week and I fully plan on having Mirena removed. Last but not least of my problems, I also have no sex drive. Best wishes to any one who has it, and experiences no side effects, but for me I have never had so many health issues until I had this thing put in. I would not recommend Mirena to anyone!!!

I recently began using the Nuvaring (about a week and a half ago). I've suffered from Migraines for 14 years and take regular medication that allows me to control the symptoms. Since beginning this BC method, I have been unable to manage the headaches. Taking my normal medication will work for a few hours, but then the headache will come back. My only options are to take more medication (and risk over medicating, thus causing other problems; liver problems, kidney problems, etc.) or deal with the pain. The migraines interfere with my vision and cause serious nausea, making it nearly impossible to continue with school, work, or anything else for that matter.
Additionally, I have been experiencing a dramatic increase in vaginal discharge, serious mood swings ranging from anger to depression with really no triggers, anxiety about my safety in strange situations such as driving or walking through campus, abdominal cramping in the region of my ovaries, what I can only assume is vaginal tenderness due to the rings presence, and I have been waking up at the same time in the middle of the night since I started the NR. I usually sleep an average of 9 hours each night, without interruption. Now I'm sleeping about 4 hours, waking up, and then sleeping another 4. I wake up feeling tired and with the feelings of an onsetting migraine.
The only benefit I have experienced is an increase in sex drive. I have gone from wanting sex an average of once or twice a month to wanting it several times throughout each day. I do have low levels of "free" testosterone according to my Gyno, so she recommended the NR.
Finally this morning I had enough of the symptoms. I took out the ring and within just one hour, my headache dulled, my abdominal pain lessened, and I feel slightly happier.
My question is, has anyone experienced symptoms like mine, that only lasted a few weeks when starting NR? I really love the convenience of the NR, but if I had to choose, I would not take the symptoms for the one benefit.

Just started with Nuvaring a week ago. Haven't been on any birth control in over 5 years. I don't know if these are common to all hormonal birth control methods but have been experiencing nausea, dizziness, anxiety, mood swings, pelvic soreness, and I can feel the ring; in general and during intercourse. My boyfriend can feel it, too. Also, there is some vaginal discharge that smells funny. Not strong, just funny. The mood swings are intense, from crying for almost no reason, to a strong sense of anxiety. My sleep has been disturbed due to a general sense of nervousness. I think after this month, I will switch to the pill.

I feel so relieved! Even though no one else has mentioned anything about the side effects that I experienced I'm 100% sure they were caused by Aviane because the symptoms started with the pill and ended when I stopped taking it. My experience with Aviane was a very NEGATIVE one I experienced:
-IRRITABILITY
-VAGINAL DISCHARGE
-YEAST INFECTIONS
-INCREASED HEART RATE
-ANXIETY
-CRAMPS
-WEIGHT GAIN
-PAIN IN MY LIMBS
-AND WORST OF ALL, PAINFUL SEX (due to vaginal dryness, i was told by gyn)
I could not find an explanation for all of these symptoms until I went to the dr. and she recommended I stop taking the pill for a while to see what happened, and the symptoms totally disappeared after I stopped taking the pill.

I am so glad that I found this site and to see that there are other women out there who are having problems with the Mirena. I thought it was just all in my mind! I had the Mirena inserted in February 2008. Started having problems with high BP when pregnant with first baby and when I went back on pill after his birth BP wasn't doing any better. After having my second child, I contemplated about Mirena vs. having tubes tied. My OB said the Mirena was the perfect thing for me and was pretty much like tubal ligation, but without the surgery. I had no problems when Mirena was inserted..just bleeding (seemed like forever for me to stop bleeding) and the normal dizziness. For the first three months, I never knew when my period was going to be, but I just kept remembering what my OB said "your periods will be like nothing after the first three months." My periods did get a little better...however not the "light" or spotting periods. After the first three months, I started noticing that my hair was starting to fall out more but thought it was part of postpartum. I started feeling really tired, skin started to break out, felt depressed, my mind was racing, couldn't sleep, had problems remembering things (simple things), migraines got worse and more frequent than what they used to be before, moody, agitated, had chest pains, nausea in the morning (at one point I thought I was pregnant again!), stomach pains, diarrhea/constipation, kept having vaginal discharge (like when you are pregnant), came down with bacterial vaginosis, UTI's were somewhat common,no sexual desire and my BP was out of control. Seven months after having Mirena inserted, I started having sharp pains near right ovary. I had problems with cysts in right ovary before and had them removed so when the pains started, I had a hunch that most likely it was another cyst. My OB closed her practice so when I went to new OB for annual pap, I mentioned all the things I was experiencing including suspicion of cyst. I told her I had been experiencing all symtoms since Mirena was put in. She told me that she has never heard of the Mirena to cause symptoms like these. Told me that perhaps I was still having effects of postpartum and that my body was trying to get "back to normal" and get used to Mirena. Had all these blood test done and everything came back normal. I did have a cyst on right ovary and was told that it should go away within 2 months. Just had a follow-up ultrasound today (2 months later) and cyst is still there along with other cysts on right AND NOW left ovary. Most of the time, I am in a lot of pain especially on the right side. I was told to just take Motrin for the pain, but that nor heat packs work at all. I am really considering to have the Mirena taken out. I REALLY believe that the Mirena is the cause of my cysts. Is there anyone out there who have gotten cysts while with the Mirena? And has anyone experienced having no problems with cysts after the Mirena was taken out? Since finding out that I have multiple cysts on both sides and knowing that my doctor will probably tell me they will eventually go away on their own (first one is less than 2cm and others are smaller), I don't know if it is even worth keeping the Mirena in. I hate having all these symptoms...I just want to be "normal" again. BUT, IT IS VERY COMFORTING TO KNOW THAT THERE ARE OTHERS WHO ARE OR HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME. Now I can tell myself that it is not all in my mind and I am not going crazy!

I've been reading about Mirena for months and seen that everyone is having the same side effects. I gained about 30 lbs. I got cystic acne along with oily skin with this flakey layer on top. Instead of gaining weight evenly it seems to have started collecting in different areas. I've gone from being a size 2, to having a spare tire. It also gave me mass amounts of cellulite compared to what used to be there. Especially on my legs and butt. It seems to have thinned my skin and hair. Constant bloating, infections and terrible odors, loss of sex drive, UTIs and bladder infections for the first time and a few in a row, etc.
Well after trying so long to get someone to take it out without insurance, I found a post from a girl who took hers out herself. She said she squatted down, grabbed the strings with two fingers and gently pulled it out. I read that 5 minutes ago and mine is OUT. I ran to the bathroom, I was so excited!! washed my hands and did the same things she described and it's finally gone. GIRLS, DO IT NOW! It's easy and painless and maybe we can get back to normal. I've tried every diet, every cream, every face wash.... I work at Sephora and I use great products on my skin... and none of it has been able to do a bit of good. You're not paranoid, it's the Mirena. When I pulled it out it actually had a mucus plug on it... And I read that one of the ways it works is to change the chemistry of your vaginal discharge. Anyone else notice a creamier almost chalky consistency? I think anything that stops your periods for so long, and does so many different things to the way your body works, all at once, has to be terrible for you. It's bad news. I'd rather have another baby than put my body through this again. I feel like it aged me in body and mind. Please don't be scared, go take it out.
And everyone who does, or gets it taken out should update the rest of us on any positive or negative changes. I will post regularly and anyone feel free to ask questions or tell me about your experiences... Let us know if you find a birth control method that doesn't have life altering side-effects.

See my earlier post (from concerned mother on 8/5/08 at 8:29pm) regarding my daughter's severe reaction to the Gardasil vaccine during October - December 2007. As stated, she continues to experience menstrual problems (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, severe cramping) which incapacitate her. In October 2008, her annual pap test showed precancerous cells. She is going for a re-check in February (I will post the outcome once it's known). The doctor wanted to wait 6 months for re-check but we are not comfortable with that. Just wanted to remind everyone to get their annual pap exams!!!

I had my IUD removed November 12th after having it for two years. The removal was painless. Within twenty-four hours, the abdominal bloating was noticeably less and within a week, gone. I also noticed an increase in energy level and change in appetite. I am looking forward to getting rid of the gained weight over the past two years and getting back into the clothes I love. More importantly, I want to feel alive and attractive again. The only adverse effect of having the IUD removed was four days after removal, I had a very emotional, crying episode for the better part of the day. A minimal amount of vaginal discharge, similar to the start of a period, has been present for about six days. Otherwise, no problems. Also, my knees, hips and back are no longer hurting like they were. Don't hesitate to have it removed and don't let your doctor talk you out of it! It is your body and your right to make all decisions regarding your healthcare! Good luck to you all. Thank you for sharing your experiences. If you had not, I may have never put two and two together.
