I had a Mirena IUD placed at my follow up appointment after my second child in November of 2004. I feel that I have had excellent results from this form of birth control. The strings disappeared after I had it in for about a year. They had to do a few sono's to see if it was still in place. It was but I had developed an ovarian cyst that didn't go away. I ended up getting it surgically removed and found out that this is a side effect of Mirena. the cyst caused me no pain and the only reason I knew it was there is because of the sono's. I will not have surgery again unless it is highly recommended by my doctor. I just had a new one placed this month. It was more painful to place than I remembered it being. The cramping lasted for almost 24 hours. I have had no periods since before my youngest son was born....he's 5 now. I have had it for so long I don't know if the problems that I have are related to Mirena. I am obese. I have been obese my entire adult life so that is nothing new. I do have a hard time losing weight but I don't believe it has anything to do with Mirena. My hair is thicker since starting Mirena. I do have some skin problems but most of them have been with me for more than 10 years (seborrheic dermatitis and rosacea). I have a history of depression...so nothing new there. I have varicose veins...a result of my obesity, heredity, and working on my feet all the time w/o support hose. I am 34 years old, married, and do not plan to have any more children. I plan to continue using Mirena until menopause. I am EXTREMELY SATISFIED with Mirena and I am sorry for those of you that are having problems with it. I hope you find a method of birth control that works for you. Sexual freedom is a nice thing for a woman to have.

I start taking Yasmin 2 years ago,and discontinued it because of the melasma that I got on my face. Now that I am reading all this posts,I am connecting dots.I had been having horrible headaches, feeling bloated, very tired, depressed, rapid palpitations, chest pain, heavy legs and varicose veins.I never thought it could be caused by the pill,I really thought I was because I was aging(Im 32)Now I know the reason. As soon as I stop taking it all the symptoms stop too.Now I have been feeling great, but I was attributing to the fact that I start taking organic apple cider vinegar, MSM and some more vitamins.

I am a Registered Nurse and feel foolish that I wasn't able to connect the dots sooner. Yasmin's effects for me were insidious thereby slipping under the radar as the culprit responsible for all of the side effects I was experiencing. On Yasmin for 3 years:
- feelings of shortness of breath
- heart palpitations
- horrible anxiety and feelings of panic (not good when you're a nurse in the
ICU)
- insomnia (never had trouble sleeping before)
- varicose veins on my stomach??!!
- strange weight gain around my abdomen I could not lose despite my best
efforts
- ear popping and a feeling of fullness in my head
- constant runny nose requiring new prescriptions for nasal sprays and
allergy pills that did not work
- new abdominal bloating (ultrasound was negative)
- UTI (never had one of those before)
- strange colored periods
- agoraphobia (previously outgoing)
- depressed--lost interest in things I previously enjoyed, moody & angry,
- horrible fatigue (unable to jog anymore without becoming drained for days
- sharp debilitating headaches (CT negative)
- breast pain
- cellulite I've never had before
- and last but not least, compromised circulation to my right arm causing it
to go numb and change in color (Doppler showed partial arterial
obstruction that has since improved since quitting Yasmin)
Quit Yasmin 2 1/2 months ago and everything is resolving itself slowly. A big price to pay for good skin.

I had my Mirena inserted 4yrs & 11mths ago. I believe this evil little device nearly cost me my life. A locum GP suggested it to me when I consulted her about tubal ligation. She said that as I was having heavy periods which made my varicose veins ache the Mirena may be a better option, so I went for it. It hurt having it inserted but the cramping after was a killer. My husband noticed a change in my mood within a week, at my six week check up he asked if it could be associated with the Mirena and was assured that it would be rare. The next six months I became more and more depressed to the point that I decided to commit suicide. Luckily my husband was one step ahead of me and I'm here to tell my story. Also have had migraines, weight gain, nausea, breast tenderness, but no period. I never associated any of these symptoms with Mirena (neither did my GP). As the five year life span was approaching I decided to go through the motions of having it replaced. Whilst looking on web for a local Gyno I started to read the horror stories. Today I had it removed, it was a little uncomfortable but I'm hoping it is going to make a difference to my long struggle to manage my depression.

I had my Mirena inserted in October 2006 after the birth of my second child. The insertion process was extremely painful, especially the first 30 minutes after. The cramps persisted for about three hours, they were so bad that I had to pull-over during my drive home from Kaiser and go straight to bed when arriving home. I can definately relate to a lot of the symptoms mentioned by others. I have joint pain, CRAZY mood swings, skin rashes on my neck, occasional sharp pelvic cramps, breast tenderness but most importantly bad leg cramps & pain. I don't know if another side affect caused by Mirena might be bad circulation. My family already has a history of varicose veins and bad circulation, but I've noticed that I did not have varicose veins before Mirena. Its been almost three years since I got on Mirena and my legs are constantly hurting, cramping, and tingling. This tends to happen even more after a long day of sitting at work and drive home. My thighs are now showing small patches of spider veins & varicose veins on both legs and I'm getting really worried. I began walking about two miles a day about four months ago to improve my circulation and leg pains but nothing seems to work. I don't think my weight is a factor since I'm 5'5 and weight 127 lbs, I've only gained about 5 lbs since I got on Mirena. After reading about others side effects I'm definitely contemplating on getting it removed soon & having my husband fixed. Please let me know if anyone else has had any circulatory problems.....

Hey there,
I had my Mirena inserted a little over 2 months ago. The inserstion was pretty pain-free as the sister used local anesthetic.
Other than the severe cramps I felt that night, I must be honest that I have not experienced any of the painful side effects I've read about on all the forums I've found.
I spot here and there, but my periods are definitely lighter.
My sex-drive is through the roof! I had a high libido to begin with, so I'm not complaining.
The ONLY 2 negative side-effects I've experienced, are a little bit of acne on my chin, and hair loss. I'm hoping these will calm down though (as it states on the official Mirena website), but if not, I will most likely have it removed.
I had terminated a pregnancy one month before insertion, so I'm really just wanting to give my cervix a break which is why I don't want to have it removed unless I absolutely have to!
Is it possible to only experience these rare symptoms and none of the more common ones?
In Mirena's defence: has anyone ever read the side-effects of the birth control pills so many of us have used? It's become common to just accept the fact that we will most likely gain weight, get varicose veins, have headaches etc...
I suppose, nobody can feel what you're feeling, so if it doesn't work, change it.
I'm really hoping that mirena works for me, so if anyone has a positive experience, please share it!
All the best...

Hello everyone,
I have been feeling certain things lately so I thought "let's see what Google thinks it is". I typed in "bloated, tired, swollen legs, increased breast size" and the first site that pops up is this website. I actually thought I might be pregnant because and was surprised to see "Yasmin Side Effects" instead of "signs of pregnancy". I have taken Yasmin for almost 7 straight years. I was off it for 1 summer and probably one other month total in that whole time. I haven't really noticed any huge changes until recently and, like I said, it hadn't even crossed my mind that the things I was feeling could be from Yasmin. First of all, my breast won't stop growing and are so, so sore. I actually just bought my first D bra tonight, after being a C since probably my Junior year of high school. My legs and specifically my calves tend to feel extremely tight and stretched lately. I thought this was from running & exercise in general, yet I've exercised intensely & frequently for 4 years and this is a recent feeling for me. I have noticed for about a year that spider veins have started appearing on my legs. I thought I was just inheriting this from my mother, who has a lot of spider/varicose veins. My sex drive has definitely decreased significantly over the years I've been on Yasmin, but again, I thought this was normal or "just me". I go through periods where I have quite an appetite and can eat bad foods yet not gain weight. Then I go through periods when I seem to have the same eating patterns as normal and I'm exercising normally as well, yet I always feel bloated and fat. Plus, I have no appetite during these times. I also go through cycles where I have horrible stomach issues (I get a "bubbly" feeling, have had really bad cramps on occasion). I thought this was a side effect of coffee but now I'm wondering...
I get my period next week and then I think I'll stop taking Yasmin to see if any of these problems subside. Does anyone know any type of birth control that doesn't cause side effects?
Good luck to everyone!

Hi! I have started the NuvaRing almost three weeks ago, and I have been feeling sooo tired that I have lost all my interest in everything-except sleep.Also-I have had these weird, charley-horse type cramps in my calfs which swing down and around the arch of my feet. The cramps started exclusively on my right side; but recently I have started feeling them on my left. I would wake up in the morning, get up and I could hardly walk until sometime in the early afternoon. Today, fed up with this crap, I took the damn thing out-and almost immediately the charley horse tightness and pain dropped off. I also knew it would not be long before I would start to gain weight, as I have slacked off my exercise program due to major fatigue. It has been only a day, but I am feeling great, knowing I made the right decision. I have varicose veins in my thigh and calf area-and I fear the blood clots that the ring would predispose me to. I don't need birth control as my husband is infertile; this was prescribed to clear up a cyst.

I'm a woman, about to turn 50.....and have been experimenting with the statins for about two months(not by choice either). I tried Zocor and had a stop that after 10 days because of massive hair loss. Once stopped....the hair loss stopped immediately. Just a ill more than a month later I started on Lipitor. All seemed to be going ok. NO hair loss. BUT.......mannnnn I don't sleep hardly at all. I'm tired beyond all belief......and its that bone deep OMG I'm sooooo exhausted type tired. I often times don't eat an evening meal after work because I seriously don't think I cant stand long enough to make anything. My legs feel as though they cannot move another inch. I have horrible cramps in my fingers.....the calf of both legs and now in my rib area. Ive had horrible horrible blurred vision.....my attention span is about as long as a gnat!!!!! I seem to have an all over bone deep body ache. It gets to the point that if MOVING A MUSCLE would save my life........Id have to die sitting still....I cant do it. The every day you wake up in the morning headache is way beyond OLD. I also notice I'm nauseous and or have a gut ache almost all the time. Its effectively killing my appetite so maybe I'll lose weight, but damn..is this the way to do it?
WHY wont the doctors believe that this damn drug is responsible?

Hi, I've just had my Mirena taken out ( thank Heavens) and can now get my life back. The only good thing was no periods for five years. The hormones gradually ran through my system and all the side effects crept up on me.
My allergies got MUCH worse.
My skin thinned.
I felt three thousand years old , ALL the time.
It stripped a goodly amount of calcium from my body, my teeth started crumbling.
( after two months post removal, my bone and teeth density has improved out the site! WITHOUT supplements My dentist and doctor are now a lot happier)
I had NO sex drive at all.
My weight crept up with NO lifestyle change, 30 kilos! - I have lost on average half a kilo a week since removal. NO diet change, NO activity change.
I've always had slight hormonal acne on my face and nowhere else... with Mirena I had it all up my formerly crystal clear back and diarriere, bust and even scalp.
Lots of other minor crap.
Please, if you have sensitivities to the pill and other hormone treatments, DO NOT go here. I thought I was just aging rapidly- bull dust! I'm just glad that my husband gave me all the support I needed to bring this tragedy to my doctor and Gynie's attention. For so, long I thought it was just me.
Now I'm having my tubes clipped. Hormonal interference just doesn't work for me

Has anyone else had problems with high blood pressure, high cholestrol or varicose veins while on Yasmin? I've developed these problems since I've started Yasmin....within the last year (I've been on it for a year and a half) and I"m only 26 years old. This should not be conditions of a healthy 26 year old.

I started taking Yasmin last year around June. I am overweight and had switched off Loestrin which had made my periods disappear. When I started Yasmin I have regular periods, but about 2 months later my sex drive dropped to zero! I also began exercising a lot and lost about 35 lbs. I will be losing more. Now here is where I have a problem. I know that being overweight can lead you to having more varicose veins, but why would I all of a sudden after LOSING weight now have some varicose veins showing up? Could this be related to my Yasmin? Could it be related to DVT? I am starting to get worried about that. But just in the last two weeks I have been getting lightheaded when I situp, standup, bendover...that kind of thing and am worried that it may be the pills. I am not sure. I am going to try to go to the doc and see about changing them. What do you all think?
