i cant believe what im reading on this site. i had my daughter in march 09 i tried the "patch" for a while which worked great except my hormones didn't like it and made my blood pressure rise. so i got the iud in june i think. its worked just fine not pregnant or anything although i feel like i am.. i feel little thumps on my stomach which i dont know if it could be gas but it feels an awful lot like when i had my daughter in my tummy. im always tired cant seem to get enough sleep and i eat like crazy. i have gained 15-20 lbs since i had my baby. i dont know if i could be pregant or not?? i do have mood swings like crazy, loss of sex drive, lack of energy, and weight gain one thing that i have never had is cramps. i want to take it out but i know if i do i will get pregnant but i dont want that to happen i have to much going on. i cant use any birth control that has hormones in it so im pretty much shit out of luck. but i want to get it out so i can be happy again and have sex like i used to with my husband i dont know what to do!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been on velivet for 1 year and 4 months and I have to say its been the worst on my sex drive. I'm NEVER aroused. Sex is painful, and mood swings are in full blast. The positive things are light periods, no break throughs, no cramps, low acne, no headaches, no real weight gain, no weird leg thing, no depression. Just sheer lack of libido, and emotional mood swings. Ive been on so many birth controls and none of them affected my libido like this one.

I am so happy that I found this website when I did. I have almost lost all of the relationships in my life that I care about. I had the Mirena inserted in February this year. Over the last 5 months I have become a completely different person, a person that I do not want to be. I am a monster... sad all the time. I have insane mood swings, raging from happy to sad to angry! I'm a miserable person that I don't even recognize. I thought that I had a mental disorder. I'm now realizing that so many other women are dealing with the same thing. I have anxiety, depression, mood swings, weight gain, lack of energy, lack of sex drive... all of this has affected me and all the people around me. I have mad an appointment to have the Mirena out this week. I'm hoping that the side effects go away quickly, I cannot deal with them any more!

Also a note for other dealing with this - I have started taking St John's Wort in the meantime to help with my depression. It has helped immensely! I will continue to take it until I feel that all the side effects are gone.

If you are considering the Mirena, please be cautious. If you start to feel these side effects, take it out ASAP! They will only get worse!

I am 24 years old and just beginning my 2nd month with the NuvaRing. I have never had very good luck with birth control- I lost over 20 pounds on the patch because of extreme nausea and loss of appetite, and have had tried pretty much every pill, always with bad side effects. Weight gain, acne, headaches, you name it. I decided to try the NuvaRing last month just to see if this was the BC for me. After the first 3 weeks, I thought it was going great...didn't notice any side effects which is a first for me! But then the 4th week (the week you remove the ring and get your period), I had the worst mood swings and depression I can ever remember. It was PMS to the extreme. My poor husband. I am very happily married, but for the past week and a half, I have been acting like an uncontrollable b**** even to him, and I can't help it! I'm just very sensitive. I thought it would only last a couple of days but it has been longer. Just put in a new ring yesterday, and I'm still feeling very depressed. And I am a very happy, level-headed person..usually! I don't know if it's just a coincidence or if this is actually related to the NuvaRing though. Part of me wants to take it out and see if everything goes back to normal, but then the other part of me wants to stick it out and see if it gets better. What should I do?!

I had my Mirena placed April 1, 2010.. 7 months after having my daughter. Previously, I was taking the pill and expeirieced moodiness to the point my husband just couldn't handle me anymore!! I was suggested the Mirena and decided to go with it.. worst desicion of my life!! I'm hesitant to take it out because my husband and I are unsure if we want more children and I'm not sure what form of protection to use because condoms just don't work for us!! Since on the Mirena for 4 months now I've expierienced anxiety, headaches, stomach pains, boils/acne on my face, and weight gain.. I look 4 months pregnant again!! 6 weeks after having my daughter I was 5 lbs away from my pre-baby weight.. after 7 months on the birth control merry-go-round, I'm now 20 lbs away!! Those of you that had Mirena taken out, what are you using for birth control now?? Thanks ladies!!

Hello all,

I had my Mirena removed a week ago today.
I can tell you that the removal was painless, I did spot a bit after the removal.
I took Ibubrofen beforehand to help in case I had cramping (which I did and it was very minor)
I measured my waist that night (just to monitor to see if there would be any difference). I measured again on Saturday and lo and behold, my waist went down 1 inch!
I am no longer bloated, my knee pain has gone away and I have had very minor cramping!
I would like to offer some advice for people considering having it removed; I was actually scared of having Mirena removed because I thought that it might be worse than actually having Mirena stay but if you feel that any side effects you are having might be casued by Mirena, have it removed, you know your body better than anyone else.
I hope everyone on here can find guidance through what others have experienced.

I just wanted to post a positive experience with Mirena. I had mine put in July 2008 after the birth of my daughter. Insertion was painless and followed by mild cramping and a few days of spotting (which I was told I would have). Overall I had a wonderful experience with this form of birth control. I actually LOST 20 lbs during my experience with Mirena. I don't feel that all weight gain can be blamed on a birth control. While it could cause bloating and add a couple of lbs to your body, I feel that controling/maintaining weight has a lot to do with diet and exercise! Anyways, I never had pack pain, bloating, cramps, bleeding (my periods actually stopped all together!! hooray!!), yeast infections... nothing!!! I just had it removed July 12th because my husband and I are ready for another baby. After removal I had mild cramping, a heavy period type bleeding that lasted for about 3 days and that was it. Once we conceive and deliver our 2nd baby, I will be getting another Mirena. Again just wanted to share a positive experience in this ocean of negative ones.

I was put on Paxil last summer because I was having anxiety attacks and would worry about things so badly to the point that I would burst into tears unless they went my way. I was diagnosed with severe anxiety and OCPD (ocd w/ a personality disorder making it difficult to allow others to help you basically). I would yell at my kids for no reason and fight with my husband over such petty things. I found it hard to be happy in general. I just was always upset with everyone and could never be in a good mood. I found negativity in everything. Going to the grocery store was awful. I would yell at other customers and I looked so ridiculous, I knew it. But I couldn't control my anger and would ignore others who smiled or asked how I was doing. I found it nearly impossible to be nice!

Right away I felt SO much better being on this medication. I felt great. For once in my life I was allowing my house to get messy, not care what people thought, and my husband and I no longer fought! It was like a magic pill. Part of me thought it was a placebo type effect, but even if it was - I felt great!

In January of this year I had started dieting and exercising... I had gained about 10 pounds. After several months NOTHING was helping, and in fact my weight gain escalated to 30 pounds. I couldn't believe it. I had blood tests done and nothing was the culprit. My doctor said that the Paxil usually causes weight loss... so I put that thought aside.

Last month I was just fed up with my weight gain. I hated how I looked. I have always been the skinnier type, even after having kids... but now I no longer fall in that range and I was starting to get depressed. The doctor suggested that I wean myself off the meds and see how I felt since the meds could possibly be the problem. Going off the pills was bad. I was taking 30mg. Did 10 days of 20mg, and then 10 days of 10mg and stopped altogether. I had headaches, nausea, insomnia, and loss of appetite.

It's now been 2 weeks since I have been off of it, and today I just talked to my doctor about going back on it. I have started my old ways again. Arguing with my husband about something as stupid as leaving the closet door open or making too much noise while in the kitchen. I run a daycare and I have found myself literally screaming at the kids. I have no patience and have spent many nights crying myself to sleep again, which is what I have done pre-medication.

This time I'm starting at 10mg and seeing what happens. I'd hate to start gaining again... but I can't live like this. My doctor said some people just really need something to take the edge off. My mother & brother are on similar medications for anxiety as well. My brother is on something for OCPD - same thing as me! It's sad that it has come to this... but I just can't cope. I would much rather be dealing with weight gain than to be the monster that I am without meds.

I have had Mirena since the end of March 2010, this was after having my 2nd child. The inserction was so painful, it took me days to recover. Since then I have had bloating, a lot of weight gain after I stop breast feeding. which has been about 3 weeks. I have been having spoting live every other week. The thing that bothered me more was out of the blue sharp pains in my lower abdominal region, the pain felt like some was staping me from the inside. So I went to the doctor this past Thursday to have it removed, and the did an ultrasound because they couldn't find the strings. Guess What I have to have SURGERY to have it removed. I am scared on what is going to happen next, so please of you have a doubt or feel something is wrong please go and have your doctor check it out. I know my doctor was happy I did, and so am I !!! Please think twice before getting Mirena.

WOW I was so surprised and relieved when I found this website. I've been on the NuvaRing for almost 7 years. I thought it was working wonders. I had a normal period, only a slight weight gain. I've decided to go off of it to clean my system and plus it has become way too expensive for me. I was really worried about gaining weight now that my body will not have the hormones but I started reading everyones experiences with anxiety and depression and realized that the NuvaRing is most likely the cause of mine too. I have to take anxiety medicine a couple times a week because I have such bad panic attacks. I thought it was just me being crazy. I am always tired and hopeless and for a while fell into a severe depression. I just thought it was my life and my genetics causing me to behave this way. I would have never thought to think it was the nuvaring since I have been on it for so long. I am really excited to see how my body and mind react now that I have stopped, it's only been a couple of days. I'm praying that the anxiety and depression and restlessness go away which would be a miracle.

Thank you all for posting your experiences, you've really changed my outlook on myself. Maybe I'm not crazy! Maybe I was just so used to the hormones the nuvaring was giving me. I'm really hopeful for change and grateful that I found this site.

Hi, everyone, I have had my mirena for 2 years. I stumbled across this website because I wanted to research the side effects from the Mirena. I would like to share my story with you all. About a year ago I began having severe low back pain. I figured that I had probably slept wrong or may have had a bad urinary tract infection. Well after 2 weeks of nothing helping the low back pain. I figured well it may be the Mirena. I made an appointment with my OBGYN who had moved approximately 185 miles away to work for another office, for my annual pap smear. I went in to have the pap and then had to wait a week for the results. When my test results came back they were abnormal. The doctor told me I was positive for HPV and I had abnormal cells, which may be cancer. He asked me did I have any abnormalities when he was treating me at the other doctors office where he onced worked and saw me for my prenatal visits,"I told him no". I went back into the office and a coposcopy was performed. I had to wait another week for the results. When those results came back my doctor called me and told me the not so good news, he said I had cervical cancer and was in stage 1. Well go figure I had no insurance and still don't have any insurance, because no insurance company is going to pay for pre-existing conditions. I know this because I am an insurance specialist. I do qualify for medicaid. And here it is a year later and i still have the mirena inside me and I do not know the status of the cancer. I haven't even mentioned the crazy weight gain, along with bloating, bad mood swings, and severe depression. I have already called and requested my medical records. I thought the Mirena was going to be a life-saver instead it has been a life threatner. I pray that this does not happens to any one else. Ladies be careful when choosing and using birth control. I have always been a cheerful, loving, and positive person, but since having this Mirena, I have become a person I never would have imaged. Believe me when I say "Everything that sounds good, may not be good for every individual". I will keep you all posted. Hopefully there is a doctor willing to help me from the heart. God bless you all.

I took Lupron for 4 months before having HTA ablation. I experienced hot flashes, pain in my legs and joints, weight gain. I had the ablation in May, Lupron wore off June 1. I experienced worse moodines and random tearful episodes for a couple of weeks after my Lupron wore off. Interestingly, my hot flashes got much worse for a while immediately after the ablation, but now are less severe. Now (July 25,) my blood pressure has gone up to 140/90, where it never has been. Is Lupron still in my system? I wonder how long it takes to be out of my system? Haven't had my period since April, which I consider a good thing...don't know if this is still Lupron, or successful ablation. For now I will diet and exercise to take some weight off, see if that will lower my bp, before I go see the doc. I seriously don't like the blood pressure issue!

weight gain.

Hi, I made a post earlier, I have had the mirena removed 4 weeks ago and I have already lost 5-6 pounds using a healthy vegetable full diet!! (My original weight gain was 9# in 6 months from initial placement) Now, my lower abdomen-less bloating- has gone down 2 inches and shorts are starting to fit again. Overall I feel great, just had one large period that started 3 days after the initial removal and lasted 5-6 days.,,,it could be in my head but I also do not think I feel as hungry or like I am having low blood sugar feelings frequently during the day which in turn I am not doing as much snacking. Hope this is helpful.

I started Femcon FE 3 months ago due to a fibroid cyst on my uterus with major bleeding and periods lasting 10 days and bleeding between! The last 2 pills I tried did not seem to help regulate my period at all back to it was when I was using Kariva for the past several years. I knew that I was way too lucky for way too long with the 4 day very very light periods!! I noticed at first that my breasts were so sensitive and painful and it hurt just having a shirt on!! I was on vacation and out of the country so I did not have the luxury of picking up the phone to try to make changes with my doctor. I also experienced the same thing that alot of others are talking about with the discarge and it is nasty and does not make you feel "fresh & clean" I tell ya!!! I noticed I was tired and wanted to eat all of the time when usually I am a pretty active person watching what I eat (but I always seemed hungry!!). I did gain some weight but I guess at 46 my metabolism has slowed down and not actually buying the Chips Ahoy anymore can only help me get that all under control! Chocolate is weekness for alot of us and I would love to blame my weight gain on it but I will take some of the blame!! LOL It is only 3 months later and I am extremely happy that I did not make changes (atleast not yet) because my periods last only 4 days and are only slightly heavy the first day. The discharge is almost gone and I see changes daily so am very hopeful! I am 46 and have no desire to have a hysterectomy or partial so I can avoid those out of control bleeding episodes and out of control periods! I am hoping this is the right answer for me.

I went off Yaz after being on it for over 20 years and decided to try the Merina IUD as an alternative to the pill. It's been less than a year and I've noticed some major changes to my body. My level of excercise and eating habits haven't changed, yet I've gained 10 pounds all in the midsection and gone up a size in clothes as a result. I feel bloated all the time, and it worsens when I eat, no matter what it is. My face is oily(I usually have dry-normal skin) and my breasts are tender and look like they've enlarged. They feel heavy. I am 5' 7'' and weighed 136-138 prior to the IUD, which is what I weighed for approx. the past 10 yrs. I now weigh almost 150 lbs. I've never been this heavy and it feels uncomfortable, not to mention the extra weight looks unattractive. Initially, I attributed my changes to getting older, perimenopause symptoms(I'm 49 yrs old), but the changes have happened quickly. My weight gain over the yrs has always been very gradual which is normal as you get older. ( I weighed approx. 125 lbs in H.S., so my weight gain to 136-138 happened over 30 yrs and after having 2 children). I am now suspicious that the IUD is causing my body changes and after reading about the IUD and people's experiences with it on the internet, I am convinced that this is the culprit. I am planning to contact my Dr. tomorrow so I can schedule an appt. to have the IUD removed.

I have been on nuva ring for six years. I am sexually active and married. I have taken the nuva ring by the books. My period started July 1st and I put my ring in on Sunday July 3rd. Since I have been on nuva ring my periods have been about three days. I have a 28 day cycle. Starting around July 9th my breasts started to get tender and swollen. They remained this way for a little over a week. Starting the week of July 18th these symptoms seemed to go away and I started to have lower cramping and some heart burn (on and off). Today my breasts are swollen, I have minor cramping (on and off), and heartburn (on and off). I know that this could be symptoms of pms, but I have never experienced pms that has started this early. Since I have been on the nuva ring the only symptoms of pms that I have ever had was bloating with slight weight gain. I will be taking my ring out on Sunday July 25th. I should be getting my period on Thursday July 29th. I did an at home pregnancy test to make sure and it came out negative. Any suggestions????

Over all I have the nuva ring has been great to me. Other than this month I have no complaints.

I took this pill for my holiday for 2 months straight (skipped placebo), so I could skip/delay my period. I had minimal side effects; the first week, I was quite tired and had a decreased appetite. After that first week, things were right back to normal; no tenderness, no bloating or weight gain, etc. I might have even lost weight, but since I've been exercising, I have no way of knowing if the Nortrel helped it along. I would use this pill again... I'm glad my experience with it was absolutely non-intrusive to my life, aside from being tired.

I started taking the Nuvaring Dec. of 2009 and in the end of March started having hair loss(bald spots) by may I had loss pretty much all of my hair. My doctors diagnosed me with Alopecia Areata and said it was do to stress. I felt at the time that I was not stressed out enough for all of my hair to fall out. I knew it had to be the Nuvaring bc it was the only different thing that I was on. A couple months later my hair grew back and everything was fine and in April of 2010 my doctor decided to put me back on the Nuvaring. I went to 3 doctors and asked their opinion before getting back on and they all said my hair loss had nothing to do with the Nuva Ring. Well, after being on it for 2 months I had experienced weight gain, no sex drive, and hair loss again!!!!! DO NOT GET ON THIS MEDICINE!!!! I really hope all my hair doesn't fall out again but I do have bald spots and excessive hair loss. I should of listen to the Internet and not my doctors and to my gut feeling. At least I know now what really made my hair fall out!!!

I have failed laminectomy syndrome, and may need more surgery. I also have Small Fiber Poly Neuropathy, and have tried every drug out there for pain. Methadone is the only drug that works for severe nerve pain. However, I am extremely upset because I was not told of all these side effects, massive weight gain, extreme fatigue, swollen painful joints, and difficulty coming off the drug. If I had known about all these side effects, I probably would have said "no thank you"; here I am 1 year later trying to get off of it, not because I don't have pain, but because my Doctor found out that they had me on such a high dose, they could have killed, or I may even still have heart damage. Now they want to see what my baseline is, I just want off of this, and have my body back which isn't that great but I was thin, and wasn't passing out, which I'm not sure why. If you have a choice, don't take this drug, this all happened in less than a year.

I started on Prednisone 16 years ago when I was 32. Would love to hear from some folks who have taken this evil/helpful drug for 10+ years. I was diagnosed with birdshot in both eyes. This causes lesions on the back of the eye and the prognosis is not good. When I would have a flare up, I would take as much as 100mg per day for a week and then tapering down from that. They tried me on Cellcept 5-6 years ago and my immune system dropped so low I almost died. I had to go on an IV drip to turn that situation around. I recently caught a staph infection and after tons of anti-biotic drips and 2 hospital stays they ended up cutting off the end of my pinky finger on my left hand. My vision in my right eye dipped dramatically. I hope to be employed again soon and have medical insurance to get checked out again. It has been about a year since my last exam. I have had all the synptons listed. weight gain, depression, moon face, serious mood swings. I have been on 10MG a day for the last year. Hope this info will help someone. The eye implant sounds interesting. Anyone had that? Thanks & God bless!
