My eight year old son was diagnosed with mild asthma by our GP and was taking Ventolin for a persistent cough. When this didn't relieve the cough the doctor prescribed Singulair. He started the Singulair in March 2009 and within 2 months we realized that his personality had dramatically changed. It has taken us a while to figure out what was going on because eight year old boys are starting to assert themselves more and I think the side effects have been escalating over the last month. He was angry most of the time, very hateful towards his siblings, saying very dark, nasty, hurtful things. He argued every time we asked him to do something and would snap into a screaming inconsolable emotional wreck at the drop of a hat many times a day over trivial or imagined problems. He was having nightmares and bursts of hyperactivity that were overwhelming. He told us he felt frustrated all the time and hated everything. When we tried to calm him he was unreachable. Just yesterday he had his fist clenched and pulled back ready to punch me when I was trying to help him with a computer problem. He was shaking and his face was contorted with rage and he just wasn't my little boy anymore.
It has been devastating for our family and we were ready to take him to a psychologist. He is normally an incredibly considerate, perceptive, loving child, highly intelligent, helpful and fun loving with a great sense of humor.
He has also complained of leg pains and has been wetting the bed again. It was only yesterday that I began reading about other people's side effects and have taken him off Singulair as of last night. Whilst he has still been argumentative today already the aggressive intensity seems to be easing.
I am absolutely mortified that I allowed this to happen to my son and my family and I am so grateful to others for sharing their experiences.
We still need to address his asthma and will make an appointment with a specialist next week, but given his asthma is so mild he should not have ever had to suffer these side effects.
I only hope now that he has not sustained any long term effects and that his younger brother has not been scarred by the truly horrible things that my son has said to him.

I have a 4 year old that was on Singulair for 17 days. He has always been a strong will child, yet he was always manageable. Those days that he was on it, and a couple of weeks after were the hardest weeks I have ever had with him. Within days of taking it I began to notice an extreme change in his behavior. He was moody, angry, he was beginning to be aggressive. He wasn't sleeping through the night anymore, and even began wetting the bed, something he hasn't done since he was two.

It was prescribed for his asthma, he couldn't walk five steps without coughing and wheezing. It did work, but I didn't think it was worth it. I went in to see his doctor, she said the aggression wasn't a side effect of Singulair in children, but had been recorded in adults. So she said it was fine to take him off of it. And to control his coughing he could just use 2 puffs of Flovent twice a day.

Well, he's been off of it for almost 2 weeks. His first days off were the same if not worse. He was even moodier than usual. I started thinking it wasn't the Singulair. He became exhausted, sleeping in the day. Was still angry and not sleeping at night.

But as he heads into his 2nd week off Singulair, he seems to be acting normal again. :) Normal for a 4 year old anyway. He's been sleeping through the night for the past few days and has been happier. He's playing again with his toys in a non-aggressive way. He just seems like he's becoming himself again.

I read some things were people said they didn't notice a change in their child, but it's taking some time for my boy to get back to "normal."

Nasty, horrible medication. Took this for 6 months to treat Body Dysmorphic Disorder and depression. I was wetting the bed, waking up screaming, having hallucinations and displaying the most violent behavior.

Okay, here's one you probably haven't heard before.
Have been taking Toprol for several years. A week ago, my pharmacist switched my prescription to the generic Metropolol. I took the 7th pill yesterday morning. Last night, I had a weird dream about a flood and I awake to find I had wet the bed! Almost 60 years old and wetting the bed? It has to be from the metroprolol. That's the only thing that has changed!

My daughter has been on singulair for about a year now and she just turned 3. I discovered in about January that all through the night she would make weird noises with her mouth because her mouth is so dry. Then came the disturbed sleep. For the last two months she would wake up in the morning crying because her legs would hurt so bad. She wanted me to carry her everywhere. She could never keep up the other kids because she was physically exhausted. Then came the tantrums and crying. She just started biting, hiting and being mean to anyone around her. She also started not being able to remember her numbers and colors. I took her off of it a week and a half ago. The last three days her mood has improved and her memory seems better. The only thing that has not improved is her dry mouth. Hopefully that will improve with time.

My daughter just turned 3 yrs old, and was put on Singulair about a month ago. In this time I have noticed she has been stuttering. She is 3 yr old that has a huge vocabulary & is very smart (if I do say so myself). It is very odd to me that she is stuttering. In asking the DR, he did not feel it was medication related. But may I also add that she is fully potty trained & in the last few weeks has been wetting the bed every night.

Is anyone else's child stuttering?

My four year old son has been on singulair for 6 weeks. He has started complaining about nightmares, wetting the bed and has become irritable and easily agitated. In addition, he seems to go into these wierd episodes of not being able to control his body...like someone high on drugs. Has anyone had a similar experience?

I will be calling his dr. in the am.

I just was prescribed this medication after going to a new dr twice and having very high BP. My last reading was 170/110. I've been on it 3 weeks now. The dr NEVER once mentioned the cough as a side effect.

I noticed it started 2-3 days after I started the medication and thought it was my allergies since I have severe allergies. The cough kept getting worse and worse, as did my tiredness. I'm up ALL night coughing my brains out from this crappy drug!

I'm 27 yrs old and now am wetting the bed thanks to coughing so hard at night!! I'm embarrased to have to sleep with a towel underneath me because I'm coughing so hard (even in my sleep) that I'm leaking urine.

I went back to the dr yest thinking I was sick because of the severe coughing and horrible sore throat. Not until I found this and many other sites did I realize it was the Lisinopril! The kicker is that yest my BP was just as high as it was pre-Lisinopril! I'm going to stop taking it as of tonight, especially if it's not even working!

How long did it take to have an effect on your BP? 3 weeks should have been enough time for it to work if it was going to IMO. I can't stand the coughing anymore! Even the codine cough syrup my dr gave me isn't helping me sleep. Now I just hope the cough won't linger for weeks like I've heard it can.

My now 4 year old daughter has been on the drug, 4mg chewable tablets for children since April 2005. We did not see any personality side effects. The only two things we have noticed is that she started wetting the bed at night. She was dry at night before the drug. And just recently, after 8 months of use she is complaining of tummy aches without any other symptoms. She doesn't feel like she is going to throw up or has cold symptoms, just a tummy ache. We were called by the preschool yesterday to bring her home due to this. She has been complaining off and on of a tummy ache for over a week with no other symptoms, no fever.

We are taking her off of Singulair after reading all the posts in this forum. She takes no other medications.

I'll post back my results to see if her side effects clear up.

Bedwitting for younger daughter. She was 8 when we put her on it and within 2 weeks she started wetting the bed. Doctor told us that this could not be the cause.

I am a 39 year old woman who switched from Azmacort to Advair in December for a few weeks. After that short of time, I felt me throat feel like it was closing up, I was agitated, and one morning after a week of building symptoms, took my blood pressure which was 20 pts higher than usual. I also had burning in my chest and felt on the verge of a panic attack. Since then I was prescribed Pulmicort, and it has been so much better.

I also accessed this site mainly because of my son who is 6. He was diagnosed with cough variant asthma and some allergy to outdoor mold. The doctor started him on Advair, and over the last month or so, the behavior change has been startling. He has been very agitated, clearing his throat constantly, wetting the bed, saying he was"scared" at bedtime, saying he was "happy on the outside but sad on the inside", and being so hyperactive and inattentive as to be staring right at him when telling him something, and he would totally go off and do what you just told him not to, and be genuinely confused as to why he was in time out.

I have an appointment tomorrow morning with the allergist and have had him off of advair for four days. Already the throat clearing has stopped and the behavior has subsided. I am also hoping to keep him off of singulair as well after hearing about those side effects and see if we can manage for now. Thanks for all of the helpful info and we will see.
