Extremely painful insertion...thought I would pass out with the pain. Have had 5 natural births and i can honestly say, this ranks up there with the pain level. On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate my pain as 12. There was the horrific clamp thing ( to widen my cervix) and the most awful pinching sensation as the device clipped onto the wall of my womb. I was given something (poss. Xanax) to "relax" me for the insertion procedure. Constant bleeding for first 6 weeks, then 3 weeks of bleeding, 1 week of no bleeding for 5-6 months. Mine is ok 'til 2011, but I'm already dreading and anticipating the pain involved in removal. I do get a lot of headaches ( but am also taking anti-depressants, so maybe they aren't caused by Mirena). Can get weepy and overly emotional at times...again, could be caused by depression or Mirena. I love being able to forget about contraception, but the pain of insertion will really make me think twice about having another one inserted.
If my girlfriends had been honest about their experiences of pain during insertion ( which they claim to have kept from me so I wouldn't be put off by their horror stories) there is NO way in Hell that I would have consented to having the Mirena fitted.

I am 46 and had Mirena fitted in 2007. Apart from the initial setting in period I have been fine with the coil until may 09. I have constant terrible lower back pain. I have to wear a towel everyday and I have gone to no lose every month to back to losing heavily each month, which us what I had it fitted for in the first place. I was at the hospital last week and was told I have fibriods and that the consultant is going to remove the Mirena next week and put in a new one in. If after 6 months I am still having problems they are going to remove the lining of the womb. I am now wishing after many years of problem periods, wish they would just take the whole lot away because despite what they say, nothing seems to work and I suffering more and more the older I get.

Wow, I'm a bit fr***ked out after reading all these posts. I must be one of the lucky ones, as well. I had my Mirena put on 1 year ago after my first child. It did not hurt and I have had very few of these complications listed. However, I have suspected that my weight gain and inability to lose was a side effect of Mirena. This is what brought me to this site. I've gain 15 pounds and no matter how much I exercise or stage myself...it stays! I also notice now that I read....that I have had a lot of hair loss. I now have a few questions:

I lost my milk supply after going on Mirena and my Dr. assured me this wasn't the cause. Anyone else experience this?

Also, I'm concerned about the effect this will have on my next pregnancy. What has been your experiences once you've started trying again? I was told I would have no problems and should go off 1 month before TTC, but now I'm pretty worried!!

WOOOHOOOO! MIRENA IS OUT!!! had it removed an hour ago and am looking forward to being me again. the only part of the removal that hurt was being held open with the speculum thingy but that is mainly because i have a very retroverted cervix and womb.(tilted backwards) once she got hold of the strings it took 1 second and it was out, that part i didn't feel at all. i passed a clot but haven't had any other bleeding yet.
the doctor who removed it said for most women the mirena causes no problems but for a few, who are sensitive to male hormones it can cause havoc (she's not flippin joking!)
i've also been to see my own doctor this morning because i've been having lots of heartburn, he said it was down to the male hormone causing muscle softening as it does in pregnancy, and allowing acid to come up. (these male hormones have a lot to answer for!!)
i'm hoping that now i'm free of mirena i can sort myself out and try and be me again, i feel robbed of the last 6 months, because i feel as if i've been elsewhere.

To monkeygril, i had to rush myself to the hospital on Sunday because the pain was that intense, they couldn't find the threads then they had a look and took swabs, i went for a scan on Tuesday and they said the coil had moved down my womb, i suppose all the contraction pains i have been having means my body is trying to push it out, im going to get it out on tues because i cant take anymore of this pain, and i have really heavy clotted bleeding as well which isn't very nice, ill keep you updated on how i get on,

Cheers for now x

I had the Mirena fitted in August last year. I am 33 and never been pregnant. I did suffer from depression before and horrendous periods, hence why I had it put in, I didn't have it for birth control as I've been single the past year and a half. Anyway, I have NEVER felt pain like when i had it fitted, it felt like they were inserting a knife into my womb. I had to have a pain killer stuck up my bum cos I couldn't move. I was crying and screaming and just generally in a bit of a mess. It eased off after the pain killer. Ever since then I have had bad abdominal pains and even pain in my vagina and in my rectum, when I went for my 6 week check they said that things would improve and it was probably just hte shock of hte coil.
I went to a different doctor after that and they said it wasn't related to the coil and that it was probably IBS and gave me antispasmodics. They have eased it and when I went back 2 weeks ago for the third time in agony they tested me for bowel cancer, chrons disease etc. All tests have come back clear and have now taken it upon myself to have it taken out on Tuesday. I can't bear the pain any more. At one point I thought I had appendicitis. I have been going to bed with a hot water bottle most nights and having hot baths.

My periods never stopped and now I'm getting sore nipples for about a week before I'm due on. Another thing I've noticed is that I've been getting spotty shoulders, its gross!!! I'd be interested to know if anyone has had the same experience as me as far as hte pains go etc!!

OMG i now know that i'm, not losing my mind.A u kidding me?I see almost everyone of you ladies or should i say victims of Mirena in me.I am only 22 and i have 14 month old son who means the world to me but yet still i can't care for him so i had to send him to my mum in AFRICA to help. As i read these stories i'm in bed cause i don't wanna see nobody. My husband is an American and i am a Canadian.I don't get to see him all the time unfortunately. When ever i see him i get worried because i don't wanna have sex.I feel terrible at this age and my life is going down the drain. My demonic friend(Mirena)has been part of my life since aug08 and i have been getting my period right after it was inserterted. The worst thing was my doctor told me i should feel the rope whenever i put my hand down there.I have never felt that rope so i don't even know where that thing is living in me.My "doctor" said don't worry bout it...huh...and he has not let me had an ultrasound. After reading all your stories he better start listening to me cause he is gonna take it out on Monday when i see him. There are people out there who will do anything to have a child and the Lord has blessed me with a fertile womb and am trying to destroy it.Have mercy Lord for i have sinned.Pregnancy is way better than "PAL MIRENA"

Hi, I am 46 and had the mirena removed 3 weeks ago due to many if not all the effects most of you have described. Once removed I began 'normal' bleeding. Ok I thought, normal period..... 3 weeks later still bleeding but now profusely, literally could not leave the house this weekend as I was flooded every 20 minutes. Losing clots which are scary, seeing stars! an emotional wreck. Feeling totally drained I saw my GP today who said having mirena removed can sometimes cause the womb to be scratched and so cause much bleeding. She has prescribed me utovlan to try to stop the heaviness. Bit worried about whether its all mirena related or am I in the stages of menopause? symptoms are very similar.

Most of us that use this seem to have it inserted soon after delivering our babies. Therefore it makes us wonder if it is postpartum depression or the IUD.
I had mind inserted on Aug 1 2008. I started back to work on Aug 4, 12 weeks postpartum. I kept thinking I was feeling so tired, depressed, tons of anxiety, basically not like myself at all, because of my new schedule of being a working mom. Well it has been only about 3 weeks and everyday I feel dizzy and tired at work. I have ridiculous anxiety that people are going to try to turn my baby against me. I have constant anxiety about my mother in law, when before she never really bothered me. I would consider myself severely depressed a lot of the time. We all have so many changes going on with having children but it does seem that it might be the IUD. I'll probably have it removed because I would rather have more children than be worthless to my family. I wanted to wait 5 years before having number 2... but do I want to be depressed and anxious all the time during my sons baby years? No thanks!

i've had my mirena in for almost 10 weeks, i had my baby girl on April 2nd, and got mirena may 12th and everything was fine at first... besides the fact that i've been bleeding ever since i had it put in, and on 2 occasions have passed flesh colored blood clots, had severe cramping, weight gain, headaches, depression, paranoia, anxiety, anger, extreme appetite gain, loss of sex drive, and many other strange side effects... i never would've thought that these things were caused by this IUD, until i read how many other women were having side effects to... then finally i realized how this thing worked... it doesn't prevent pregnancy at all... there's a chemical that thins the lining of your uterus, therefor, an egg gets fertilized, travels to your uterus, and your body aborts it, so you are time after time becoming pregnant, it just makes it physically impossible for you to carry the baby in your womb... which raises this question to me... does this mean it could cause tubal pregnancy? which is a risk to your life?! hmmm...

I GOT MIRENA IN ABOUT 2 1/2 MONTHS AGO AND WELL I AM NOW SUFFERING FROM THE SAME SYMPTOMS THAT ALL THESE OTHER WOMEN DESCRIBED. I HAVE PAIN THAT COMES AND GOES IN MY ABDOMINAL AREA, I FEEL TIRED ALL THE TIME, IRRITABLE, DEPRESSED, HEADACHES, BAD CONSTIPATION, WEIGHT GAIN, HAIR FALLING OUT, AND BLOATED SO BAD THAT I LOOK LIKE IM 5 MONTHS PREGO. IT SUCKS I FEEL LIKE I AM GOING INSANE TO THE POINT WHERE I CANT EVEN STAND MYSELF, I DON'T KNOW HOW MY HUSBAND DOES IT. OH AND TO TOP IT OFF 1 MONTH 1/2 INTO HAVING IT I HAD TERRIBLE PELVIC PAIN I COULD NOT EVEN WALK, AND SO I WENT TO DR. AND THEY SAID THAT I MIGHT HAVE A CYST SO NOW I HAVE TO GET AN ULTRA SOUND TO C IF IT IS A CYST OR NOT. UP UNTIL TODAY I DIDN'T CONNECT MY SYMPTOMS WITH THE MIRENA EXCEPT FOR WEIGHT GAIN AND THE POSSIBILITY OF CYSTS. THEN I WAS TALKING TO A FRIEND OF MINE THAT WAS CONSIDERING THE MIRENA AS WELL AND SHE MENTIONED IT TO HER AUNT WHO HAD IT AND HER AUNT TOLD HER NOT TO GET IT AND TLD HER HOW THE MIRENA IS THE PORTAL TO HELL. SHE CALLED ME TLD ME ABOUT IT AND WELL THEN I STARTED TO LOOK FOR OTHER WOMEN'S EXPERIENCES AND THAT IS HOW I CAME ONTO THIS PAGE, AND OTHERS ALL WITH NOTHING BUT THE SAME COMPLAINS. MAYBE 1 OR 2 GOOD EXPERIENCES BUT THE REST WERE BAD. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT ON 7-21-08 TO HAVE IT REMOVED AND GET BACK ON THE PILL THAT I WAS TAKING FOR ALMOST 9 YRS AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH. I CANT WAIT FOR MONDAY TO COME. I WILL LET U ALL KNOW HOW I FEEL AND HOW MY LIFE CHANGES AFTER I GET IT REMOVED. UNTIL THEN ALL I CAN SAY IS DON'T GET MIRENA ITS THE PORTAL SO HELL!!!

My experience with Yasmin was decreased aggression, mood stability and increased breast size. when I stopped taking the drug, I had an increase in aggression, less fatigue and no weight loss.

My T-3 levels are fine. My blood work is fine. Not many headaches. My mood became more depressed when I stopped taking Yasmin.

Not sure if I am suited to take the drug. So, I am starting Yasmin again to see if I notice side-effects. My estrogen levels were low prior to starting Yasmin the first time. So, I am wondering if my testosterone is a bit too high, and if Yasmin levels me out so to speak.

I think those with normal estrogen levels, prior to taking Yasmin, are badly affected by Yasmin. I wonder if those of us, with lower natural estrogen levels are as badly affected by Yasmin.

Will let this site know in a few months.

ALSO get this pill from Canada - ******
It costs $22 and it is the exact same packaging, etc.

Hope this helps

I had the Mirena inserted January 2007. Thought it would be the best option since I forgot to take the pill. It hurt like CRAZY, I swore and screamed that the other patients in the waiting room looked at me funny when I came out.
In one year I picked up over 20kg's, even though my eating habits and exercise patterns haven't changed. I also became EXTREMELY depressed, my doctor then told me it sounds as though I'm Bipolar. I refused to accept it and just got on with life, towards the end of last year I became addicted to sleeping pills, just to take the edge off my severe mood swings. I started cutting myself, broke up with my boyfriend for no apparent reason etc. I had it removed last week on valentines day and my Gynie put me on Yasmin. Hopefully my moods will start to stabilize now. I asked the gynie who put it in if the Mirena could cause such drastic changes in my body and she said no because apparently the hormones are localized. I believe this is sooooo untrue! If you're pregnant, it's all happening in your womb, yet your whole body goes through a change.
ps, the removal didn't hurt at all! And I'm so happy that the thing is out!

At first, the Mirena, which I got from the doctor at the family planning in Stock bridge, Edinburgh didn't cause me so many problems. It was painful at first possibly as I haven't had a baby and my womb must be small. I could deal with the physical pain though, I just had to take a pretty strong painkiller. Probably not good for my health though. The pains were quite weird, I could actually feel pain in my vagina and later in my ovaries. But I went to the clinic and they said it would be fine and I thought I would stick with it as it seemed like a good option. The pain happened quite regularly, during ovulation and menstruation.

After a few months, maybe 6, I was developing mood swings. I would get quite tearful and irrational and fight a lot with my partner. I even became quite violent. I was anxious and considered taking anti depressants. I also had trouble sleeping and had a lot of nightmares.

I started to get acne on my back and chest and on my face when I had never had a sort before. My skin has become slightly different as well as the lasting acne, which I cannot seem to get rid of it even having had it out for 6 months. It is gradually disappearing but is still unsightly and I feel quite upset about this. However there are still scars and the skin is not as firm and is very blotchy.

My skin was also quite noticeably itchy whilst I had the Mirena in.

My libido was very low, this affected my spirit as I didn't feel human in a way. I suffered vaginal dryness and pain during sex, when I was coaxed into it. I am only 23years old.
Now my sex drive is back to normal and I feel so relived, like a different person. I would NEVER take hormones again, especially the Mirena.

I also suffered with pains in my joints of my hands. I don't know if it is caused by the Mirena but I had never had it before and I haven't had it in a long time since a while after removal.

I lost about a stone in weight, I don't know if this is down to Mirena, but as I was a nervous wreck I didn't really manage to eat enough at times.

I have almost 100% recovered from these side effects, but have still the acne.

I'm getting migraines and diarrhoea, though as the doctor has inserted it INTO my cervix and punctured the wall of my womb, I'm not 100% sure if it's the fault of the coil or not!

Has anyone had any sleep disturbances with Mirena? I have had horrible nightmares and wake up feeling really shaky and horrible, and still really tired. Maybe this isn't caused by the mrens, but I can remember when I was younger i used to get pre-menstrual insomnia, the night before I got my period...just wondered if there was a link with all the progesterone/progesterin. Also, people who have had mood swings, have you noticed if they are particularly bad at one part of your cycle? Mine I would have to say, are really bad a few days before bleed and 3 or 4 days into the bleed, when I feel suicidal.

I've still not taken it out yet. Maybe 'm being a bit stupid, but I'm so scared of getting pregnant-I'm still at uni-and I can't think of any non-hormonal contraceptives....cept maybe something I've heard of called the 'sponge'. Has anyone heard of this or used it/know where I could buy it in the UK?I'd appreciate any replies! Thank you

The doctors like to tell you that they put you on BCP's for endometriosis. However BCPS" with estrogen in them help make a lovely little womb for endo to grow, and grow, and grow. Then they tell you that progesteron is what drys it up and gets rid of it. But progesterone makes you crazy! Yasmin is not to blame, it's the scientists that can't seem to figure out what cause this disorder or what can fix it. Doctors give you drugs to get you out of their office. But the truth is, there is nothing that works. And if they suggest Lupron depot( induced menopause), or even depot provera(=3 month long never ending period) tell em to stick that needle in their body and see how it feels. Until then, just try to exercise and keep healthy. B/c these doctors don't know anything, and can't help us in any other way than by prescribing percocet. So the best way to beat it is to stay healthy, mabey have a child or too if that is still possible, and then just have em do a hystorectemy, b/c non of these drugs will ever work, until these scientists actually do some research instead of just trying to sell a drug.

I more or less had a question? what could be the out come or disadvantages of taking Vicoprofen, when in your 3rd trimester of pregnancy. I've been experiencing alot of back and side pains. This is a medications I had been perscribed from a previous problem before I was pregnant and was just curious from your knowledge if it would be safe to take occasonially as needed. I will follow up with a doctors opinion later on. thank you!
