I lost 30 pounds on Weight Watchers in 2005 - lost it in 6 weeks (on the proper diet) because of my insanely fast metabolism. Shortly after that, I was put on 25 mg of Toprol XL for PACs/PVCs. Upped that to 50 mg after I started getting migraines. Gained 55 pounds in the process, though I tore a hamstring in a couple of places and put a lot of the weight loss up to months of inactivity.
Then I started back on WW and tried to lose. Did everything just right--nothing. Added exercise and adjusted my points. Still nothing. Finally googled "toprol metabolism" and found tons of people complaining of the same types of problems.
I finally got down to 12.5 mg of Toprol and my body has adjusted to it, and in the last 2 weeks I've dropped 10 pounds. I'm debating going off it altogether, since there's nothing wrong with my blood pressure, and since lowering it clearly helps.
Note to anyone who tries this - every time I lower the dose I tend to gain a little weight (it's mostly water weight--I bloat up when I lower it for some reason) while my body adjusts, but it always comes off. So if you lower your dose (with doctor's permission, of course), don't be disheartened if you gain at first. You'll get there.

I am a 39 year old white male that had aortic valve replacement surgery five years ago. About three months after the surgery (which went off without a hitch) I had a tremendous spike in my BP that went on for a few days (200/100 - enough so I could see my heartbeat in my eyes!). My Dr started me on Toprol XL 75 and while it brought my BP down some, it didn't bring it down a lot. He moved me to 200 mg a day and now my BP is around 105/55 with a resting pulse around 50.
While I experienced many of the side effects listed here (feeling groggy, confused, etc) they only lasted a few months. I must admit that I did pack on about 20 lbs over six months. However, unlike so many who choose to blame drugs (or lack thereof) for their problems, I took it upon myself to start exercising and guess what?!? The weight comes off! I now weigh less than when I graduated high school, I am in better shape than any time in my life and I believe that exercise helps me sleep better at night. All of this even though I still take 200mg a day. Given that some of you say that you're practically dead at taking 25, I should be 6 feet under or weigh 400 lbs.
I guess what I want to say is that perhaps instead of jumping on the bandwagon here that Toprol causes all of your problems, perhaps you want to take your own health into your hands and begin to eat a little better and exercise (and don't give me "but my ankles are swollen!" excuse - there is something called water aerobics). I don't deny that it can cause some side effects, but it can work wonders with your BP. You just have to DO SOMETHING to help keep the weight off (which then help with the sleep problems, mental clarity, etc).

I am so grateful I found this site! I only wish, like many of you, that I had done more research. I am glad to say that when I first encountered this site, I was suspecting I was having issues because of the Mirena, now I'm convinced. And the more I read, the more symptoms I realize are Mirena related not just "getting older". Thankfully, today I made the appt to have it removed. Unfortunately, it's not until March 17th. But, I will have it out and then have some green beer to celebrate!
In April of '06 I joined WW and was doing great, losing consistently. In June I had the IUD inserted, that went well...just some minor cramping. By September I was really struggling to loose weight and was feeling more irritable. But, at the same time had become caretaker to my Mother in law, so I attributed it to the stress of taking care of her in addition to my own family. Near the end of November I finally hit a 50 lb loss, and have barely lost any since then....that's 15 months!!!!! I've stuck with WW, and I know I'm not doing the program as well as I had but it shouldn't be such a struggle. Last week I started wondering if the problem was the Mirena, and that question led me here.
I couldn't believe what I was reading!!! It was me in all of you!! I have chronic depression and have been on meds for about 6 years, but even with increasing my meds to the max, I seem to be getting worse not better. I'm moody, irritable, blue, and impatient. It's like PMS all month long, and then when the real pms hits, I'm practically suicidal.
I also have had significant hair loss, fatigue, living in a mental fog, numbness in my arms and hands EVERY night, night sweats, lower back pain for several days on and off (are these cysts??), irregular and long lasting periods (although VERY light...I will miss that!!), nausea, headaches and dizzy spells on a regular basis.
I hope that when I have this thing removed I can return to my old imperfect self, and that I can finally achieve my weight loss goal and return my family life to a normal level of dysfunction! :)

Many strange things have been happening to me for the last year and a half, that I did not ever experience before. I just turned 38 years old. I am now suspecting these are side effects from the MIRENA. I want to get opinions about what I'm experiencing and what happens when it's removed.
The most profound thing is the feeling of being in a mental bubble. Even though I'm aware of it and I try to be alert, I feel cloudy minded and can't even rely on myself to remember things or commit to things because I never know how I will feel when I wake up each day. Some days are okay while others are completely LOST because I may have struggled to sleep the night before, sweating and soaking my pillow case and waking up with a rapid heart beat, panicking for no apparent reason right out of sleeping. Or, I'm irritable due to discomfort which takes several forms like these:
- major moodiness, like feeling totally peaceful one minute and then something small triggers me and I'm angry for hours, later realizing that I was overreacting
- visibly shaking hands, especially when I drink just 1/2 cup coffee.
- increased oily skin and acne on face, back, shoulders and even in ears, along with thinning hair around face
- fatigue and stiffness in the morning, so it takes me forever to get out of bed
- off and on fatigue that has me uncontrollably dozing off during the day
- bloated tummy (visible), gas and menstrual cramps in no predicable pattern, but I never go more than a week without these things
- strange libido, one day I wouldn't care if I ever had sex again, the next night wake up horny as heck at 2 am
- ears ringing, jaw pain, mystery pains in back and joints regularly
All along I've been assuming these odd things were stress and age related but the more I think about it, there's just too many things, and these things don't necessarily represent the stress of a typical stay at home mom.
Sure, I have had stress and anxiety in the past, but they could always be connected to something large going on in my life. Now, the anxiety and moodiness hit unpredictably and indiscriminately, it seems. For a long time now I feel like I'm a total mess physically and mentally, even more so because I realize something is wrong
I am pretty sure as of right now that I should get this removed. If the symptoms go away I'll then know what caused them in the first place.
I am wondering what happens upon removal, will it also be a roller coaster of physical and mental anguish???????? How long will it last?

I was diagnosed with a sluggish thyroid also and the dr put me on 50 mcg of levoxyl. I had all of these symptoms of low thyroid hormones and didn't know it. I never put all the problems to the same culprit. I had very bad muscle aches, with or without exercise. I kept thinking I had bruised or torn something. I had weight gain on WW and a health study I was on. Nothing, I mean nothing would help me lose weight. I've gained 20 pounds. Which also caused depression. Sometimes I would have low blood sugar, when I've never had problems with blood sugar before. I was very tired all the time. I felt like I couldn't make it in the evenings and some mornings. I would complain to my PCP that I felt like I had just caught a cold - really drained and tired. I have really severe allergies and couldn't figure out why. After starting the meds I felt bad the first day - diarhea, nausea. Then for the first couple of days I felt great. Then the fourth day I couldn't sleep and felt shaky and had nausea only at night. After about three nights of no sleep, I cut the pill in half and took it. Then I was able to rest at night and didn't feel shaky on the inside. I took 25 mcg for about two weeks and then I started feeling the same way again. So I called the office and the dr said to take 3/4 of a pill. That worked fine for the frst week, but then I started getting these headaches that won't quit. I used the process of elimination and the thyroid meds were the only thing that changed. I will have to call tomorrow and see what I can do about that. If anyone has some of these problems let me know. The dr said that it doesn't have any side effects, but I beg to differ. I'm not sure what dosage to take today. I've had these bad headaches with a little dizziness for a week now.

Please go to www.fqresearch.org and ww.fqvictims.org and read. you will find some help there. Please file a medwatch report thru FDA.gov so that this poison can be taken off the market. Good luck to you and your husband and I'll say a prayer that he recovers, however, many people have problems for the rest of their lives. I've been suffering since Oct 2004.

an update on my BF, now almost 3 months off lamictal and all other meds. he still feels great, for the 6th consecutive week he has lost a bit of weight as measured by WW. he finds that he is less forgetful. before, he was always losing his keys, his cell phone, you name it and he was so easily overwhelmed by everyday tasks that he assumed he had AADD.
as time passes, he is feeling better and better. the lack of headaches and muscle pain were the big pluses but now he is seeing a gradual restoration of his ability to think clearly, which is wonderful
