Was prescribed HCTZ and started taking it off and on in early August. Pain in the butt cutting the pills in half. Started to feel weird feeling in my left ear and cheek and then numbness spreading up my face, forehead and scalp.(I did have a few beers the weekend before this happened) Took myself to ER. MRI, CT, full blood work, thyroid check, EKG, heart and lung xray. ALL PERFECTLY NORMAL. Of course I was diagnosed with possible MS, Belle's Palsy, and was told I might just be wired weird.

Went to primary the following day for follow up and was told that my blood pressure may have been the cause of the episode. Prescribed Lisinopril and started taking it immediately 10/12.5. Started feeling good pretty quick, but noticed a few crazy dreams and almost like I was falling.

Missed a few doses and and had a few beers over the labor day weekend. Started meds on Monday but started feeling pins and needles coming back in different parts of my body. Continued to take meds and then went camping. Had a few beers around the fire. Woke up next morning with slight case of Vertigo. Continued with meds through the weekend and have felt dizzy, dumb, tired, my eyes don't move correctly, my left arm has felt numb and swollen, my left cheek tingles and I feel so swollen in my gland area under my ears. Knee pain too.

I didn't take a dose today, and I feel 100% better. Still tingly and numb in spots, but better. A little anxious and my heart feels like it's beating really deep and fast. BP is 154/82 after going down quite a bit on the drug.

Anyone else had trouble with the alcohol? Any similar symptoms? This site has calmed me down as I've always been a worrier/hypocondriac type. any response or idea would be really appreciated. Thanks everyone...good luck!

I just read many postings here regarding lisinopril/hctz and the sexual problems it had caused you. I'm a 26 year old male, just married, and am having major problems with my sex drive and erections as well. I've been to several andrologists and they all concluded that 'everything is fine' and that i shouldn't be having the problems i'm having (based on many blood tests of course). I actually used to have a very high sex drive and no problems at all with erections, but i started losing my sex drive slowly but surely a year ago when i started taking lisinopril/hctz. Few months later, my erection started getting weaker and weaker as well. Now, i almost have no sex life. I quit lisinopril/hctz just 3 weeks ago, and i THINK i'm experiencing better morning erections, but still my sex drive is abnormally low. Sometimes my wife gets offended. I may get an erection during foreplay, but the erection is usually short lived, since i have no sex drive in the first place. Could anyone please share with me their experience with quitting this poison, and please let me know if you recovered your sex drive/life. Many thanks,

Wondering if anyone has noticed an increase in sun spots on their face? I'm 31 and wear SPF 30 on my face daily - but since I've started on Yasmin the sun spots seem to be getting worse daily (I thought this wasn't supposed to happen until my 40's). I haven't changed anything else in my daily routine - just curious is anyone else has noticed the same thing?

I have been on prednisone since I was two years old (I am now sixteen) because I have Autoimmune Hepatitis IIa. I would like to point out that there is still a life worth living being on prednisone, maybe I say this because I do not know life without it, but at least we're alive! Last year I had a flare up of the AIH and had to 6x my dose of prednisone. It sent me into a spiraling depression of constant sleep, crying, hopelessness etc....but I made it through. Just PLEASE keep hope that things would get better, because I know what it's like being on the dreaded drug better than most.

I'm 51 and in good shape. I ran 60+ miles in Dec, a PR 5K and then started Lisinopril in late January. Since then I have been fatigued and wiped out after running - no longer get the runner's high at all. Two weeks ago I ran 6 miles and couldn't get out of bed for two days. Family doc said quit the stuff. That was 6 days ago - ran 3 today and was pretty wiped - also seen a pick up in anxiety. Any advice? How long does this stuff take to clear your system? When can expect my stamina to return? Thanks.

I took 20 mgs a day for 5 days in September of 2006. I developed a terrible cough, but worse than that, severe chest pains & shortness of breath upon exertion. I still can't go up & down stairs; my pain is brutal and it's going on 3 years since it all began. Before I took the lisinopril, I hadn't been having any chest pains or trouble breathing.

Is there any hope of recovery? My doctors all say they've never heard of this kind of side effect; that lisinopril is a very common drug; it's clear that I have reduced lung function & definite pain & symptoms, but there is no way to isolate the exact thing causing it or to figure out how to make it go away; just to control the symptoms.

My theory: the lisinopril triggered an autoimmune response in which my body physically tries to reject my own lungs. Any thoughts on that one? I had been taking cozaar as an ACE inhibitor to slow the rate of my renal failure; I have type 1 diabetes and hypoparathyroidism, and while I needed meds before this episode, all I had to do then was manage my diabetes & I was able to live normally. Since this, it's been nearly impossible to do ANYthing. I am at the end of my rope & I want this to stop. But 3 years later, and while the shortness of breath is improved, the pain is actually worse now. I could sure use some advice & support. I'm on my way this week to get set up with a new dr. because we've moved, and I'm going to have to go through this whole thing again. Also - I'm trying to compile a list of other people who have had side effects with chest pain & shortness of breath. Also anxiety & panic attacks as collateral damage.

I have been taking lisinopril for about 2 1/2 years now. About 4 weeks ago I was having trouble sleeping, my legs hurt real bad and when I would wake up I would have a numbing tingling sensation in my legs and feet. Went to the doctor asked her if it could be the meds and she said she didn't think so and to continue to take it. I still continue to have problems, tired, weak muscles, hurt and a raw lump in the throat feeling. She sent me for a brain mri that showed white lesions on the brain. She said it could be from high blood pressure but said my has never really been that high or it could be MS. I am right now waiting to see a neuro dr to see if I have ms but after reading all these post I am wondering if it is the lisinopril. Has any one else had these types of symptoms?

I am in total shock!!! I have been at the hospital with my dad for 9 days now and not one person can figure out whats going on. We came in through the ER with extreme pain redness and joint swelling in shoulders, hands, elbows, ankles. Thought it might be gout so they withdrew fluid from ankle that was milk colored, no gout crystals. He started lisinopril 5 weeks ago at 5 mg per day he was on Inderal LA before with no problems. The pain has moved through out his body and he now has generalized pain weakness. He was taking lipitor but has not taken for the last 8 days so I was thinking if it was the lipitor this would have stopped by now. They ruled out any bacterial infection, labs and blood cultures have all been clear. They started checking for off the wall crap viruses like yellow fever, west nile virus, parvo virus and denguey SP? He has not had a fever what so ever and has not been out of the country for 30 years. I am going to make sure he does NOT take this drug starting in the AM does anyone know how long before the side effects take to go away?

I loved it for years! I went on the NuvaRing in late 2005 and I recently discontinued the use of it (Jan 2009). I was suffering from 3 periods a month for years and no pill or even the Depo shot helped me. The NuvaRing cleared it up beautifully! I had regular and relatively pain-free periods and I could not have been happier.

A few months ago I started experiencing some major PMS symptoms that I have never experienced before. I gained 15 pounds over the course of 5 months and by breasts were swollen to the point that my nipples were dry and cracking (and yes, 4 different pregnancy tests confirmed that I was NOT pregnant). I was going insane with mood swings and I just felt like a jittery crappy mess all the time. My body temperature also dropped a full degree on average from what it was a year ago and I am really sensitive to cold now.

So, I discontinued the use of the Ring and started taking a vitamin regiment that I found other Ring users found useful (B-Complex, zinc, selenium, Evening primrose, and a multi-vitamin).

I have not lost the weight yet, despite working out 3-4 times a week with weight-training and cardio. The doctors have told me to wait it out for a year. It bums me out, but it's worth it. I have been on hormones for 9 years and it is time to be natural again. Thanks for listening.

I started 20 mg Lisinopril in May 2008 shortly after catching a cold/sore throat in the doctor's office. Previous to this I had minor post-nasal drip, nothing serious. But this time It took over a month to get over the cold, with continuous coughing and congealed phelgm in my nasal passages just above my throat. The coughing never really subsided, and started again in September with a vengeance. I purchased an Orek air cleaner, TB tests turned out negative. The doctors prescribed Claritin to counter the phlegm production, it didn't stop it only made it so thick I could barely swallow, and a asthma puffer to counter the wheezing. Now I'm stuck between trying to swallow all day like a thick motor oil is in my throat, or medicating it with a nasal decongestant which starts it flowing and a return to coughing. I have never smoked and have avoided smoky conditions for years religiously. The connection between Lisinopril and the onset of coughing is too strong to ignore. After reading the other posts on this site I will try to get off it ASAP.

Hi, I have been taking lisinopril 2.5 mg for a little over a year now. I am 20 years old and had high blood pressure for my age so my doctor prescribed me to a low dose (2.5 mg) of lisnopril. I didn't think much of it at first because I figured my doctor had prescribed it and knew what was best for me, so I have been taking it over a year now.
The past couple days, I've started to think more about things and am wondering if the lisinopril has anything to do with it. I have definitely noticed that my hairline is receding faster and my hair, especially in the front of my head, is thinning. I have also gained weight over the past year and cannot seem to get any weight off. I never had these problems of losing hair or gaining weight before I started lisinopril.
My question is could the lisinopril, even with the low dose of 2.5 mg that I'm taking, actually cause these types of things to happen?
If anyone reading this could please reply to me and let me know, I would appreciate it so much because I am really worrying about this. Thanks.

Hi, I've never posted on one of these sites but here goes... Lamictal does indeed affect some vital nutrients. They are biotin, b12, b6, L-carnitine, folic acid, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin K. My hair started falling out in clumps. I had my levels checked and I was VERY low on biotin, and L-carnitine. I was also low on zinc. I dropped my dosage from 150 to 100 to 75 to 50. With doctors approval. I started taking centrum silver and skin, hair, and nail vitamins and my hair stopped falling out and is starting to regrow. I am now back up to the 125 level and feeling better. I also started taking L-carnitine and that has helped as well although it had nothing to do with my hair loss. As to the other side effects...I have headaches, and neck stiffness, and sex headaches at the 100 plus level. And a buzzing/ vibrating in my right ear. For the migraines I take Advil. DO NOT TAKE TYLENOL WITH LAMICTAL. It lowers the level of lamictal in your system. I only take Excedrin when I must. I know this is long. I hope it helps. Even with all the side effects I still will take lamictal. It has made a huge difference for me. ( I also have occasional nausea and dizziness.) Hope this helps.

33yr Male, fairly fit. South Africa.
(very cautious on any drugs or illness - thanks for the internet for research)
About 5 weeks ago I developed severe sinusitus (headaches, dry nasal paths burning like hell, irritating eyes, sore throat...) Doctor prescribed the usual Augmentin SD. this cleared the nose, pain, throat. On the last day of the course, my chest started burning, together with coughing. Diagnosis was bronchitis (not pneumonia). so the doc prescribed Avelox for 5 days.
The pharmacist took great care in explaining all the side effects to me, and warned me to rest enough, drink lost of water (as with many medicine), don't take multi-vitamins or supplements with iron, zinc, magnesium, and most important that for 6 weeks not to do any exercise, not even walking too much, as your muscle tendons can be damaged. (I even stopped working in the garden, or lifting heavy boxes)

Taking the advice, I got better, and up to today (2 weeks since last pill), I haven't had any side effects as mentioned here. I will continue to check for any in the next few weeks.

This is a follow-up to my posting on October 10th regarding my 57 year old husband who began taking Lisinopril in March of 2007. He was NEVER on any other medication prior to taking this drug. He suffered Depression, loss of memory, lack of concentration, can't focus and struggled with small task. We have recently had an MRI done and his brain has shrunk. Deadfred1 replied to my posting and he is a 36 year old male who has been on Lisinopril for 5 years. He has the same side effects as my husband. He had a recent MRI and his brain has shrunk!!! We visited a Neurologist with his MRI results for a second opinion and he is ordering more tests because "it appears to be indictive of Alzeheimers" with the area of the brain that has shrunk. How can this be??? This was a healthy, 57 year old NEVER on a drug in his life and within months of taking this, he is in Depression and having memory issues. Isn't anyone connecting any symptoms here??? Any Doctors out there with an "open mind"? This medication is was developed from the venom of a poisonous Brazilian snake!!! Hello...it's more like a slow death with Arsenic!!! My mother-in-law has been on this drug for years and years and years. She now sits with dementia in an Alzeheimers unit. Is anybody out there listening? Alzeheimers is becoming an epidemic in this country. Have we ever thought the medications we are taking is creating this devastating disease? Millions of people take Ace Inhibitors, millions of people have Alzeheimers. They are getting younger and younger according to the Neurologist. Why, because younger and younger people are being put on Blood pressure medications from poisonous snakes. Are there any open minded Dr.s out there that can "step outside the box"...don't just "think outside the box"...."step out for goodness sake" and start paying closer attention to the symptoms people are having. I am convinced there is a definite connection to my husbands side effects and this drug. Get off people. Get off.

Here is my update:
I last took Lisinopril on July 7th 2008. .I am slowly recovering with the help of a good diet, exercise and supplements.Lisinopril strips the body of Zinc and Zinc supports the immune system. I am taking zinc, magnesium and co-enzyme q10. This c0-enzyme is wonderful! It takes about two months to actually feel the results but for the first time in 5 years I have energy.

I also take vitamin c. I try to exercise at least 5 days a week.My blood pressure is slowly coming down naturally.I will not take those pills. I will take my chances.
I think I have permanent right shoulder damage, although if I take Glucosamine, it does feel better.I still also have major stomach problems such as pain, indigestion and rib pain.

I hope someone can help. I am 42 year old female and I have been on Lisinopril 9 years. I now take 5mg daily, down from 10 when I first started taking it after developing cardiomyopathy. Lately my ever constant post nasal drip is worse, my throat is sore, headaches daily. I clog the sink daily with the hair I lose after the shower. My GP doc has done loads of tests on my head to check causes of headaches but all is normal. Never mentioned maybe 9 years straight on Lisinopril could be the problem. Of course I can't see my cardiologist for weeks. Any one experience the same?

I have been on Synthroid since 1983--varying dosages. Side effects have included: weight gain, heart palpitations, adrenalin misfires, extreme reaction to heat (sun burns) and body feels hot all the time, fingers go numb in cold weather. Just recently have not been able to regulate dosage--fluctuating between hyper/hypo. I would like to try a new medication with few side effects. Anyone had any luck finding a different med that works?

Back again Oh my am so confused on what to do.. I was taken off this med(LISINOPRIL) at my extreme constant complaint- and put on another--well either I have atypical reactions to all these drugs or am still having side effects from the Lisinopril-- I am taking diavon now-- I feel even worse-- rash is back head hurts so bad I could cry and I am weak all the time.. I could pull every hair that is left on the top of my head right out! I now have that rash around my neck and upper legs- was told before it could be the shingles hey I never had them before,, never.. my nerves are shattered I cry a lot and am hesitant to change again-so I stopped this is day 2 and my headache has subsided
What are we to do I am at wits end.. I know I need something but what today I am at 140/90 going back up,, any suggestions? I started taking Zinc yesterday was told that I am experiencing LOW ZINC LEVELS DUE TO THE LISINOPRIL(HAS ANYONE ELSE BEEN TOLD THIS?)

I don't think that anyone can predict a time frame for getting over an adverse drug reaction. Below is my opinion but I see a lot of evidence that it is basically shared by other people maybe not exactly as I state it.

Adverse drug reactions deplete many essential nutrients from our systems. Inflammatory response is very stressful on the body. It is sometimes a very big effort to work on the diet to put back what has been taken away. It can take a long time.

Quinolines particularly deplete B-vitamins, folic acid (B-9), calcium/magnesium/zinc and omega-3 fatty acid. Sometimes the blood-lab work shows elevated homocysteine which proves that the body has suffered inflammation. Cardiologists now use homocysteine levels to show whether someone is at risk for heart disease due to inflammation. Deficiencies of B-6, B-9, and B-12 are known to cause elevated homocysteine.

Here is the pharmaceutical company ZINGER. Now companies such as Merck and Pfizer are going to offer niacin products to lower cholesterol. Well, yeh, duh !. All of these drug reactions are causing depleted B vitamins which elevate cholesterol. Then after they have tried to kill us by depleting our B - vitamins, they want to sell us another pill to give the B vitamins back to us. How many people out there are on some kind of a pill with side effects that cause inflammation? What a business? It is win, win, win.

In September of 2007 my then 13 year old daughter was put on Singular for mild asthma. At the time she was a straight A student, vice president of our school and a popular girl who's guidance counselor described as "the glue of her grade" because she was so well liked. In November she told me that she was struggling with advanced Latin and Science. She asked to drop down to on grade Latin so we did. In December her science teacher notified us that she had a C average. She told me that she thought she had ADD/ADHD and she couldn't keep up. At the same time she was having a lot of problems with friends at school and we just attributed it to being 14. 3 weeks ago we discovered that she is significantly behind in English and it was then that she told me that she is been having horrific night mares. She said that they usually involve someone killing her or her killing herself. She said that they were so graphic that she couldn't repeat it out loud. She also said that she would feel waves of anxiety that would come over her at school and she would act "witchy" to the kids in her class for no real reason. She said that sometimes when she is trying to do her homework she will read the same passage for 2 hours and still have no idea what it's about. She also said that the suicidal thoughts from her sleep happened during they day and that she had thoughts of her harming herself. Fortunately her pulminologist told us that this may be caused by singular and we immediately took her off of it which was 2 weeks ago. She has only had 1 "bad dream" not even a nightmare since. She had one anxiety attack 3 days after she was off it and she describes her moods as the "cloud lifting....slowly". Now, we have to pick up the pieces. Her grades have suffered, her friendships have suffered and most of all her self esteem is very low. I'm grateful that we found out the cause but I feel as if my daughter lost a year of her life and I worry that because Merck won't admit there are side effects we can't find out how long it remains in their system. Is anyone else concerned about the long term affect and has anyone pursued a class action suit to try to get this drug tested properly?

Have been using since 1998, ten years, 10gm per day, stops most all heartburn but does have some side effects. I have a warm discomfort high around waist and mild sweating. MD said if I stopped it would take 5-8 days to leave system, and the diet must be very non acid generating, like yogurt, jello, fresh fruit and apple juice, no orange or citric juices. He said some people then add 1 teaspoon of Aloe Gel after meals and take Zinc-L-Carnosine (PepZin) twice daily. Have used this technique for 3 weeks, all discomfort, except for mild sweating has gone. Remember, acid blockers, acid pumps, and anti acids only stop the acid, they do not do much for healing. Be kind to your tummy, no booze, coffee, pain pills etc.

My husband has been taking Lisinopril for about 5 years now. He was taking 1 tablet a day. He was feeling dizziness, and lightheadedness, so he went to his Cardiac Doctor. The Doctor checked his Blood Pressure and said it was high. Than the Doctor prescribed 2 tablets instead of 1. When he takes 2 tablets it makes the dizziness worse, so he went back to taking 1 tablet, and feels somewhat better, but it's not the best. Does anyone know of a
medication that he can take for the high blood pressure that won't cause dizziness? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
