Holy hell. I don't think I'll ever find a birth control i like. After being on Aviane for a few months i have developed bad acne in my T-zone. Ive never had perfect skin - a zit here and there every once in a while, but recently its been quite bad. Also i have been quite irritable. Is Aviane to blame? Im gonna keep researching.

My next door neighbor is the one who told me about the Mirena and I called her tonight after viewing this web site. She has had it for almost two years with no side effects... do you know people who the Mirena works for?
I think I will call my OB tomorrow and ask him, but if I still feel awful in a couple of weeks I will get it removed and have my TUBES tyed. Not to mention I have gain 4 pounds in one week, thats a first in years, I have a inside zit on my cheek, when I NEVER get acne. I only weigh 103 and my hair is already VERY, VERY thin. I do NOT want this to mess my whole body up. As for the sex drive that was bad before I had it place, in fact I asked my doctor at the time of placement if their was anything I could take to improve that.
At the time of placement I a also asked if there were any side affects and was told NO. I will be very angry if this comes down to me having it removed, considering I payed out of pocket for it and will have to do something else.

THIS THING SUCKS...I am 38 yrs old and could no longer be on birth control because I smoke. I had the Mirena put in on 4/13/2009, the insertion was so painful I thought I might faint. My doctor said I had the smallest uterus he had ever seen...I had really bad cramping all night long.
The next day I felt fine.
But now two weeks later, I thought my vertigo was coming back, until my meds would not work. I am so tired I can't function, I don't even feel like smoking, I'm lightheaded and dizzy all the time.
Should I have it taken back out or give it more time???

I have never before posted on a forum like this, but if my information helps or forewarns one other woman .... I am grateful.

I am 51 years old, been in perimenopause since Lincoln was President, it seems. I was prescribe a generic version of Yasmin, and, because I had been experiencing general symptoms of perimenopause before, did not attribute to Yasmin by increasing feelings of being in hell.

I will say one positive thing about it: I have had only one mid-life zit since I started on it. However, the experiences I am going to list now dismisses that aspect completely.

I have been on it for 4 1/2 months. The awfulness of it crept up on me, but there is no denying that now. I have gained weight. I have always been slender; however, I've gone up a pant size and even those pants are feeling tight. I'm constipated, no matter how much fiber and mild laxatives I take. My stomach pooches out and feels tight. My breasts are tender. They have NEVER been tender or sore, no matter the time of the month. My hot flashes and night sweats have reached an unprecedented level, and I have been having those off/on for a decade. I don't have hot "flashes" anymore. I heat up and I am uncomfortable all day, save for maybe a couple of hours.

Now, here is the WORST side effect: I am so f-ing angry almost all the time and my energy goes into hiding that from others. And there are the companions of anger: depression, feeling SO alone, feeling like a freak and that there is something fundamentally wrong with me... something wrong w/ my very soul. I recognize that some of these symptoms reflect aspects of my personality, but I work on that very hard in a spiritually/practical way and achieve successes along the way. This is different. This is very, very bad.

I will NEVER take another one of those horrid pills. I am going to see a doctor who works w/ women's issues and prescribes bio-identical hormones. And if THAT doesn't work, I will find another answer; rather, another answer will come to me, because I hit rock bottom and my intention is SO strong that the Answer cannot NOT come to me (okay, that's a metaphysical pronouncement, but there you go) .

For those of you who want to talk to me on this forum, or email me personally, I welcome and appreciate your thoughts. We are ALL together in this! Much Light and Love along the Way, K.

I'm on my second pack of Aviane right now & I really prefer it to most other birth controls I've tried. I haven't had a single zit on my face at ALL since I started taking it-- not even the week before my period, which usually causes me to break out like crazy. It also makes my cramps much less painful, and it has definitely increased my sex drive.

I switched to Aviane from Balziva because it caused me to lose hair, and Ortho-Tri-Cycli-lo because it made me a CRAZY bitch to my poor boyfriend, and cry almost every single day.

I still PMS the week before my period, but my mood swings definitely aren't as crazy at all.

Oh. And I lost 5lbs.

No huge downsides I've noticed yet. Tad bit of dizziness, but I'm not sure if that's cuz of the BC or what. Oh, I'm 21, 5'6 and about 115 pounds. If that helps anything.

I had been taking Tri-Sprintec for about 4 months. I turned into a very odd person, i was pissed at everything, every tiny little thing would make me cry and i finally ran out of excuses for crying and was thinking was seriously wrong with me. I would break down bawling at work just because I didn't want to go to work that day. It was extreme. Then it actually turned a little bit into depression. It caused major problems with me and my boyfriend. He thought that I wasn't happy with him and I thought that I was crazy for getting mad about everything but I couldn't help it. I was also bleeding for about 10 days and it was heavy heavy bleeding.
I gained about 7 pounds and i ate like crazy, even when I wasn't hungry at all. The only good thing that I noticed was my zits went away for good. I have never had bad acne but a few zits here and there. I don't think I have one zit for the 4 months I was on Tri-Sprintec.
After 4 months being on Tri-Sprintec I switched to Sprintec. I noticed allll the emotional problems that I was having have gone away in an instant. I have only been on Sprintec for about 4-5 days but I haven't cried at all, I have not got into a fight with my boyfriend, I am not sad at all. I haven't noticed anything different about my periods though because I have only been on it for less than a week. I am amazed about the different emotional response to things and very satisfied because that was the main reason why I switched to a different kind.
I used Depo-prevera shot for about 8 years before I went onto the pill. The depo shot was convenient, cheap, and amazing! I never experienced weight gain, mood swings, or anything and it messed up my period so i barely had a period for 3 years. I didn't complain though. Then after the depo-shot I started taking pills because I wanted to decrease the risk of osteoperosis the depo shot causes. The first birth control pill I took was Lybrel and it was amazing, never had any problems, but it was also amazingly expensive so i switched the Tri-Sprintec and here I am on Sprintec now. Thanks for listening to my journey!

Hello ladies, I've had Mirena for seven months now. I too was told side effect were minimal and that my hormones would be altered from minimally to nothing at all. First couple months cramps were horrible during my period (not so bad now). During ovulation my ovaries hurt like never before and from ovulation to 1st day of my period I have a foul smelling discharge.
As someone who has been treated for depression in the past, I thought the depression and the weight gain was all "me" again. Not to mention the ACNE! I do admit to getting the occasional zit in the past, since Mirena my acne has worsened. Now, I also get acne in my neck and along my hair line.
It's comforting to hear that it hasn't all been in my head and discomforting the Mirena continues to advertise their product without giving recognition to all the true side-effects that all us women are experiencing.
First thing Monday morning, I am making an appointment to have removed!

I just wan to say thank you so much to all of you who posted your comments on this site. I am a mother of 2 toddlers, I had Mirena inserted in April, 2008. And since then my life has changed for the worse. I too suffer from the acne, which I never had before (ok I had the odd zit here and there), it hurts. The bloating that makes me look pregnant, the unexplained weight gain ( I was 135lbs before Mirena, and now I am 144lbs).It doesn't make sense because I exercise regularly. The feeling of being anxious all of the time. But the worst part for me is the mood swings and depression. I cry all of the time. I go in fits of rage. It makes me feel like a horrible wife and mother when I see my children and husband looking at me like what is wrong with you. I have a great life, and before I stared on Mirena I was very happy, self confident, kind, caring, I was a totally a different person then who I am today. I went to the doctors last night and finally had it TAKEN OUT. Because I want my life back and I want to fell in control of my life again. If it wasn't for this site I would have thought I was losing my mind. I will give you an update in a week or two to tell you how I feel since it has been out. So once again thank you all for sharing your stories and helping me realize that I wasn't alone. C. G.

Hi, i am 22 and i got the mirena oct. of 2007 and it was pretty good it seemed for the first year or so, but lil did i know i was having all the same side effects as most of you had/have, the acne i have never in my life ever really had a zit! ha. but it is driving me crazy, and the discharge is my other problem its very heavy. i would just tell myself ohh it will go away but NO! my sex life is pretty non-existent and it has caused my man and i lots of problems and i am very moody! i have had some weight gain which is freaking me out lately. i had lost all my baby weight and now i'm up 8lbs. i didn't get my mirena till 6 months after my daughter was born. i have never had weight problems! i have come to the conclusion that humm maybe it is my mirena, so i had been doing some research and i am having it removed!! i do have an appt. to get it removed. so hopefully it will go away when it is OUT OF THERE!

I have been on Yasmin twice now, with a 6 month break while using Yaz (got free samples). The first time was for about 2 years. Now it's been 5 or 6 months. Both times, I have had the following side effects, but did not realize they were the pills fault, until I started taking it again -- and noticed the trend. These side effects are particularly bad the first 3-4 months of Yasmin, and then my hormones seem to level out...

1. Weight gain. I have gained 5 pounds since restarting Yasmin this summer. I am dieting and exercising, and I think that if I weren't fighting as hard as I am, my weight gain would be significantly higher.
2. Facial and random body hair. Ok, gross and embarrassing. I have had random chin hair pop up, and one strange chest hair that comes right before my period. These were not an issue while on Yaz, or after my body became accustomed to Yasmin last time. I am not normally a hairy woman. Seriously!
3. Pimples. These were the worst pimples I have EVER gotten, and had to visit a dermatologist for serious medicine to counter my acne. I literally have ACNE SCARS from the huge, severe cystic acne that I have while on this pill. I do not normally wear makeup, but no makeup could cover these HUGE zits! This is awful for the first 3-4 months, and my skin flairs up on the 3rd and 4th week of the pill still. People didn't even know they were pimples, as they were so big and red. Beyond pimple size. I don't know how to explain this well enough -- literally quarter sized. I am currently on my last week of pills for the month (week before period) and have a large cystic pimple that doesn't even look like a zit, because of it's size!
4. Heavy, inconsistent periods. My period last month lasted 4-5 days (about average for me). I bled through tampons and actually had to double up. For example, I changed my tampon right before I left the house for work one day. I got to work (30 minutes) and had bled through my heavy tampon, panty liner, underwear, and into my jeans. This is NOT acceptable!
5. Grumpiness. Yes, I'm a bit grumpier and more emotional than usual, but counter that with increased exercise (also to fight the weight gain).
6. Sex drive. Point blank: I have not had an orgasm since being on this pill. I'm a married woman, and that would be nice to have once in a while.

What shall I do about this? Nothing. Apparently Yasmin is supposed to be the best pill out there for weight gain, acne, and facial hair. So, they are telling me that other pills would be even worse...? Does ANYONE have a useful suggestion for a new birth control pill that will have fewer side effects?

I had my mirena inserted in Dec. 2007 (shortly after I delivered my daughter via c-section). My libido took a nose dive right away, I became really irritable, bloated, and I would get sharp pains just above my pubic bone. Not long after all that, my face started developing these little bumps, that short of resemble a zit, only they don't go away, and you can try to "pop" them like a zit. They started slowly, a few near my chin, and now they have traveled up to my cheeks, and under my eyes, and a few on my forehead. I had the mirena removed Sept 2008, and now a month. and an antibiotic lotion later, they are still there. I wouldn't have jumped the gun in thinking that the mirena had caused the bumps, until I started talking to a few of my friends. One who had hers inserted in Dec. as well, has even worse bumps on her face, and has an appt to have hers removed in 2 weeks., another who loves the mirena, but can't figure out why her face it getting these bumps!
They feel like zits, and kind of hurt, but when you mess with them nothing comes out, and they get more red, and spread. My fam doctor, prescribed Clindamycin, and it has done nothing but dry my skin out. Going to a derm today...wish me luck :)

*Never had the Mirena*
Thinking about getting it.

Here is what I HAVE had with the Paraguard

Anyone else switch from the copper to the Mirena? Better or Worse? Recommend?

I got the copper IUD in Feb 08. I hate it!! My periods are out of control I have to use the super plus tampons and pads b/c after about an hour and a half I will start bleeding on myself if I am not able to go to the bathroom and change it. I have never had to use anything over a regular tampon until now. I have had nothing, but sever problems with cyst on my ovaries and the cramping that brings me to my knees. I have been trying to give my body enough time to adjust to the paraguard but I am calling it quits next month. I can not take it anymore. In July I have broke out in these weird bumps all over my chest and back. I have NEVER had any problems with acne maybe a zit here and there. My periods last around 7 to 8 days. It lasted 4 before the IUD. I feel like I am always on edge which I believe that is b/c I am always in pain. It starts around a week before my period I will have SEVER pain in my ovaries it feels like someone is trying to pull them out. Not only am I bleeding more during my period I am sooo sore down there it feels swollen and sometimes even just walking brings pain. Most of the pain will last a week after my period stops. I have a few days a month where I feel ok. I have had it 7 months and it is not getting any better. I found this b/c I was looking to see if anyone has gone from the copper to the mirena and if it was better. I have sever mood swings, but I believe that’s how I deal with the pain a lot of the times. Not 100% sure though. If you like almost bleeding to death then I would recommend the copper IUD. I know the bleeding is heavier b/c there are times it seriously runs out of me like I was using the bathroom (not joking). I stay weak and always have headaches. Asking for this was the worst thing I could of done.

Thanks

I was on Jolessa too, but got switched to Quasense. I have gained thirteen pounds in the five weeks I have been on it, and for the last two weeks, I have really made sure I was eating right (nutritionist) and I work out five days per week and yet the scale keeps going up. ???????????? I feel like a cow. This pill has to go. Like someone else said, I would rather be thin and happy. I also get weird brownish discharge, and am moody. I also recently had a zit and I am way too old for that to start: I am headed for my 30s and have never had acne. I feel bloated so I just ditched most carbs and am eating according to South Beach. I am desperate to get back into my skinny pants. I was a size 4 or 6 before I gained weight on this pill. Now I had to buy some bigger stuff and I am unhappy with my appearance. I think I am going to switch to an IUD.

I've decided to go off NuvaRing because I don't want to be on birth control if I don't have to be (no longer with the man I was dating). I decided to see if there were any side effects to coming off of the ring and after reading these comments SO MANY THINGS MAKE SENSE!

I've only been on it for two months, but I have been a lot more emotional and depressed. I get bouts of depression here and there and since I'm a college student I figure it's been stress, but it's been WORSE than normal! I cry ten times more often and I HAVE NO SEX DRIVE anymore. I literally have not had any desire to have sex as of lately. Also, I've been getting acne which I rarely do--only a zit here or there when I'm about to get my period.

After reading these comments, when I go back on birth control, I'm definitely thinking twice about going back to the ring.

I have also gained about 10 lbs in the past month as well as getting the first zit i have had in a year. Cant wait till 230 tomorrow.........!

I was put on lisinopril 4 weeks ago and have broken out with shingles!!!!
I know it has caused it. I am very sensitive to any medications. My husband takes it and he coughs all day...I am throwing the stuff out..It may work for some but be aware if you get shingles it could be from this drug!

Everything everyone else said.

Got it 3 years ago. Within 2 months, went from 130lbs to about 155... break out all the time... mid-section weight where I never had it before.

By the time I figured out what it was - went to the doctor, and it's "stuck". Has grown quite attached to my uterus, I guess and after MUCH pain and an ultrasound, the doc says I need surgery to get it out.

The good side: very light periods. And... I'm not pregnant, but hey! What birthcontrol could be better than having a bunch of zits and getting fatter?? What's next? Are my teeth going to fall out, too????

Wasn't worth it. When this comes out, going back on Alesse birth control. I was thin and zit free...

I had a Kenalog injection between my eyes for a zit/cyst. I've had mild cyctic acne for years and easily treat it with cortisone injections every few months. I asked for a cortisone injection which I've gotten regularly with no problems, but was given the Kenalog and told it was the same thing - is it?!?! I now have an 'dent' between my eyes. I've called my normal derm to see if she can add filler or something, will it ever go away? It's been approx 4weeks and the dent keeps getting bigger.

I was on Yasmin for 5 years. Ages 20-25. During that time, i had bed-soaking night sweats and hot flashes. I also had ulcerative colitis- a pre-existing condition which was exacerbated by this poison.
In June, after nearly 5 years, my hair started to fall out. That was it for me. I went into an extreme downward spiral of depression. Not to be vain, but I was devastated. In August 2005, exactly 5 years to the month, I stopped taking it.
I completely lost my appetite and cried for a week. Since then I have felt MUCH better but am SOOOOO hungry and have gained about 6-10 pounds. My hair is finally starting to grow back!! And i'm just generally calmer. No more sweating either. HOWEVER, i never had a zit in my entire LIFE until going off of Yasmin. I dont even know what to do with them.
I've only gotten my period twice in the 6 months since going off of Yasmin and both times, my cramps were not as bad as when I was on it. How ironic.
I plan to have bloodwork done soon just to make sure everything is ok but was told by my doctor that it can take a year for the pill to be completely out of your system.
Please let me know if anyone is having similar experiences. Anyone been off for longer than 6 months?
And why do women have to be the guinea pigs for drug companies to experiment on? I'm sure they did a lot more tests for the side effects of viagra before they would allow a man to take it.

Terrible Terrible pimples. I NEVER had acne before this. The occasional zit but nothing this bad. My chin is contantly broken out and I have terrible scars from pimples on my chin and cheeks. I was on Yasmin for 3 months and have recently switched to Ortho tri Cyclen. I hope it helps with my new acne.

I've been on Advair for 1 month. Gained 15 lbs. Major abdomen bloating. Just recently started breaking out like crazy on my face & neck - tiny little zit bumps. Had some sort of canker type sore in mouth for two weeks. Have had an extremely hoarse voice for the whole time. After reading all these posts with the same symptoms - I'm going to try getting off the stuff. Will let you all know how it goes. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!
