Have been on Toprol 25 mg for almost a year, and prior to that was at 50mg for about two years, prescribed for fast heart rate/benign palpitations and also for boderline high BP. Worked fine for BP and palpitations, but six months ago, BP went high again, so now on Diovan low dose and still Toprol 25 mg. Anyway, Diovan has fixed the BP. The most major side effect with TOPROL I believe is the cause for my shortness of breath. I have now began weaning myself off of the Toprol (with ok from Cardiologist) and hope to see an improvement with the SOB....it's been terrible. I get short of breath just talking on the phone, and I do not smoke. I'm hopeful that the symptoms will improve one my body is clear of the Toprol. Anybody else experience SOB from Toprol?

Absolutely. I've been on toprolxl50 mgs for just over two years, and the side effects have grown worse than my original problem of PVC's that were pretty intense. I am trying to find a doctor who actually knows enough about this medication to see if I can eventually get off of it. In two years I've also gained twenty pounds, and many people who have posted here have had weight gain issues also.

My shortness of breath is worrying me more and more because it is also often followed by sharp chest pains, a problem I did not originally have and I am almost positive it is related to this medication. Again, others here have reported similar symptoms.

My shortness of breath also seems to cause me to be fuzzy minded at times, and this really concerns me because I am the kind of person who doesn't drink alcohol because I hate the feeling it causes.

Anyway, you are not alone, and I hope over time doctors will become more aware of what concerns this medication can create for some people. One final word of caution, if you don't already know this, is that I have been told and I've researched information regarding the fact that this medication may be dangerous to discontinue without close medical supervision because of the 'rebound effect' it creates as a beta blocker.
So be careful, and good luck...

Hello! 33 year old female. Been on Toprol XL 50mg for 2 years. I get very short of breath -- I get tightness in my chest -- severe. Feels like someone has a belt around my ribs and is pulling -- it is awful. Got so bad I thought I had asthma but the asthma meds are not helping at all with the tightness in the chest. Has anyone else had this awful chest tightness on the Toprol? Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
