Mydaughter is 8 and in second grade. She has been diagnosed with adhd. We have been taking adderall xr for about a month and a half. While the school day goes well for her, the afternoons and ugly for us. She is very agitated, cries for nothing and irratic for about 1-2 hours. We also have a hard time getting her to sleep. Her doctor prescribed Lunesta 1 mg, but it takes a long time for her to go to sleep. We start around 9:00 or10:00 and it takes a good 1 1/2 hours to get her to go to sleep. She does not sleep thru the night either and has never been a good sleeper. ALong with this add she also has hydrocephalus. While this works great for her attention problem in school, it is very exhausting for me in knowing how to handle her moods, outbursts and the sleep issues. Any advice on either? Thank you

I do not think children of such young ages should be fed man made pills like adderal and concerta....im sure it doesn't help there growth as well as there attitudes...parnents should not be relying on pills and medication to fix there children but instead take more time to help them and teach them how to consintrate better in there early years so they do not have to rely on a pill to help them all there life.

...i am 18 years old and was on adderal and concerta for about 9 years of my life...i am off it now but i still feel that i depend on it..which is not a good thing....adderal was to much for me to handle being a teenager so when i here about young children being fed these harmful pills im shocked...drugs are not the way...perhaps a better learning ethic

i completely disagree. these meds can work wonders for children who really have this condition, as well as adults. from the day they were born i decided to stay home with my kids and teach them as much as i could.. their education was one of my top priorities. no amount of skill teaching can help these children to "pay attention". i have tried it all! everything distracts them from the task at hand. the smallest job completely overwhelms them and the effect is udder stress for everyone involved leaving the child feeling extremely angry/sad with themselves because they cannot understand why they cannot focus! it is very heartbreaking to see the struggle they face on a daily basis. how horrible it must be for a child to spend 2 hours of his/her short evening after school trying to get through a fifteen minute assignment. even with nothing around to distract- the thoughts of everything in the world little kids think about come between writing the next word. i here a different story every min, at the most. positive reinforcing about how well they are doing at getting through the work, tapping the paper to get their focus back where it should be and a lot of reminding that we are working on homework at this time and stories can be shared when completed, is part of our daily routine during the school week. you think a reward will help? sorry, there is no future in their minds! they completely live "in the moment".my children actually WANT to take their med everyday because they like feeling in control of their behavior and thoughts. too many kids are diagnosed with this condition that are just a creation of bad parenting. raising kids is pretty easy when you have common sense. this should be a required trait. as a person who also benefits from these medications, i am appalled at the general public for their ignorance and misunderstanding, most often from lack of knowledge! i wish all homework were due on mondays since the medication has worn off by evening, the weekends give plenty of hours during the daytime to get a fifteen minute assignment done in.. imagine this... fifteen minutes! my kids make straight a's and b's, and the benefit i, myself have seen firsthand by the amount of work of am able to complete with no mistakes due to inattention.. is an obvious sign of the life changing effects these meds can have on people who truly need them. the dosage/brand is key. everyone is different. i bet my kids would love to share how much nicer it is to never get in trouble for behavior at school anymore! learn a little more or keep you ignorent comments to yourself please! it just makes it harder on the rest of us!!

my doctor told us about a new pill that works the same way adderall does but without all of the side effects like mood swings trouble sleeping called VYVANCE it is made by the same people that make adderall it has made a big differance for my son
