I've been taking Triamtrn/HCTZ Tab 75-50 for HBP, approx 4 years. During that time I have had three occasions when my left ankle became so inflamed, swollen, and painful to touch that I could not walk. On the first two occasions this problem was diagnosis as Tendinitis. On the third occasions I have been told that the problem may be a form of gout that can be brought on by my medication. Is it true that Maxide and its generic will produce uric acid which could ultimately lead to developing gout.

I never experienced gout until two years after I was prescribed maxide and zebeta for control of high blood pressure. My first onslaughts were treated like "tendenitis." After my fourth bout, in about a year, my internist sent me to a nephrologist, who immediately diagnosed gout. After being removed from maxide, all gout disappeared for almost five years. When it returned again, I was told that whatever else maxide did, it exacerbated a pre-existing genetic condition and permanently harmed my kidney function. Now, I'm told, I have no choice. It will be colchicine and allapurinal for the rest of my life, or misery.
