Weight gain, sluggishness, memory fogs. I've been on Toprol for nearly 3 years and my 2 biggest areas of concern are my weight and memory. I've gained 25 pounds in 3 years (never had a weight issue before and I'm 40) and CANNOT lose it. I've been on a very restricted diet for the past 4 weeks while also power walking 30 min/5 days a week with NO WEIGHT CHANGE! That is what prompted me to look into possible effects of Toprol. During the past 3 years I've also noticed a problem with my short term memory which I naturally contributed to my depression. Well, the good news is that with my diet and constant exercise, my blood pressure has dropped to 118/78 and I am seeing my doctor and presenting many of the forum entries to her this week. I am going to have her change my meds and hopefully be able to come off completely. I'm currently on Toprol XL 50mg. I will update on changes!

How are things now? I'm taking the same drug only 100mg. I've repeatedly said that my weight gain is not from over eating or lack of exercise.

OMG, What a difference life is without Toprol in it! She got ticked off at me because she felf I was undermining her however, she agreed to take me off of it, SWEARING that it was NOT the Toprol. Well, she was weaning me off of it at first but started me on Triamterene 37.5mg/hctz 25mg. The FIRST day on the new pill, I lost 3 pounds. Now I know the new pill's side affect is like a diuretic but SHOOT! THREE POUNDS in one day? After that, my weight fell off like you would not believe. AND I quit exercising!! The only real change I stuck to was drinking mostly water all day instead of tea or pepsi. I lost a total of 22 pounds by (mostly) quitting Toprol!! Of course I finally hit my brick wall, I have like 3 or 4 more pounds I'd like to lose but I'm feeling prettty darn good in my shoes right now, lol. And I've KEPT it off:). If weight is an issue in your life, Toprol is something you really want to stay away from:). JMHO.
