I'm not a doctor, but there is a mineral product I take (I'm 49) that is known to help lower cholesterol and combat accumulation of fat around the heart, helps regulate blood sugar, and helps build muscle mass. It's called Chromium. The best form to take is called Chromium Picolinate. Be sure if you take it, that you get the kind of chromium with Picolinate so that it can be taken up by your body. You can get it at Wal-mart, or any health food store. I'm sure that if you asked the people in the health food store, they can direct you to books in their store with lots of information about the benefits of it.
I am also one of the many who could not tolerate statins (3 years of Zocor @ 10mg). I have had excellent results with Omega 3 supplements to bring my cholesterol and triglyceride levels down to "normal" levels. You might want to read up on them and see if they could work for you. I get a month's supply off the shelf at Walmart and take 7 grams per day. The only side-effects I have experienced from them is a lowering of blood pressure and a lessening of inflammation in my joints.
