Hello to you all. I have been on Toprol XL for 8-10 months. I have "palpitations" which is why I was placed on this med. Also a diagnosis of Mitral Valve Prolapse. My doctor told me that the MVP can trigger the palpitations and that Toprol is the drug of choice. It helped for a few days. I felt like a new person at first. Then the palpitations gradually started to come back. I have gained 10 lbs. I am 50 years old and assumed that my wt gain was menopause. Now I think that is NOT the answer. I am an RN and I intend to wean myself off of the Toprol after reading the messages here! Why do I need to keep taking a medicine that is causing me to get fat and is NOT controlling my symptoms? Good luck to you all.

I am having the same trouble. I have been on Toprol xl 50 mg for MVP and I have gained 12 lbs in three months, plus the heart palpitations have started again. I plan on getting off this medicine soon.

I can relate to this...In almost two years I've gaind about 20 pounds, and I can't seem to lose more than a pound or two even when I starve myself. I've never had a weight problem like this in my life, and I'm 48 years old. I was originally put on this because of an irregular heartbeat, PVCs that were intense, but I've reached a point where the side effects hardly seem worth it...good luck to you and I hope you have better luck than I've had...take care.

I was put on Toprol XL 50 mg for AV Nodel Reentrant Tachycardia last November. I went to the ER with this condition exactly 1 year ago and at 1st they started me on Cardizem CR and that DID NOT work at all...kept having palpitations, so my DR. switched me to Toprol. At first I didn't have much edema with it, I'm noticing now that I do....I'm also having more palpitations along with a hurting in my chest every now and then. I never had the hurting until I was put on this medication. I'm not a sickly person and have NEVER been on anything before this. I feel as this medication is making me worse...I've gained 15 lbs in the last 6 months. I've never had high blood pressure and I'm scared that if I try to take myself off of this that it will effect my BP and that I will start having worse palpitations. When I went to the ER the 1st time, my heart rate was230 bpm...it was very scary. Is there anyone else out there with this problem?
