I have had episodes of arrythmia for the past 20 years. I had my second cardio conversion about 10 weeks ago. My doctor prescribed Toprol to control the arrythmia before (25mg) and after my cardio conversion (12.5mg). For the past six weeks I've been experiencing extreme discomfort in my chest from what I though was heartburn or some form of GERD. After reading these posts, I'm convinced it was caused by the Toprol. I've been taking it in the morning and strangely this was when the heartburn was the worst. Reading these posts allowed to put two and two together. Today I skipped the Toprol--and no more heartburn today. I've had no problems with the arrythmia since my cardio conversion. (I also take a low dose (50mg) of flecainide daily.)

Hi, I hope you will be okay but I would like to mention that sudden discontinuation of this drug may be considered dangerous, at least that is what my doctor originally told me. I have read this also, and my pharmacist mentioned it to me as well.

Because you were on a lower dose than a lot of people take, perhaps you will not experience any complications of discontinuation. If for any reason you don't feel quite right, you may want to discuss this with your doctor just to be sure.

In regards to any heartburn type symptoms, I noticed that if I don't make sure I eat something before taking this medication I tend to have problems. My biggest concern at this time is that I've been having sharp chest pains not long after I take my first dose, which is breaking my 50mg tablet in half and taking the first half when I wake up and the second half at noon. I have been developing other (possible) side effects, and taking this because of my PVCs hardly seems worth it...the cons for me are worse that the pros, so I plan on speaking to my doctor soon about how I might try to wean off this medication safely.

Whatever you decide, I wish you well, and I hope you're careful....take care.
