I am Bipolar, and I have been on many drugs. When I began taking Effexor, I was misdiagnosed and told that I was manic depressive. Anti-depressants can often make people with Bipolar worse. Effexor was the worst! My main issues were terrible, vivid nightmares and anger problems. The nightmares were bad, but after even one alchohlic beverage, I became enraged. I said and did things to my friends, that I would never do. I know you are not really suppose to drink on a lot of medication, but one drink? I became scared of myself and I am lucky to still have my friends. I do know, that Effexor works for some people, because my dad is on it and he loves it. It just wasn't for me.

Bipolar disorder- mood swings. Duh. If one drinks alcohol; a known depressant, of course there will be an affect and it will only be hightened by the combination of any medications. Stay on Divol-proex and forget the booze; the "friends" are better therapy than any medication can ever be. Why risk losing them by drinking?

My husband was diagnosed 6 years ago with Major depression on was put on effexor 225mg and prozac. After reading your posting I'm wondering if the effexor caused his angry outbursts. Now the doctor says that he is bipolar because of his rapid mood changes into inappropriate intense anger.
He also has been suffering during all this time of taking effexor with terrible violent very vivid nightmares at least 3 or 4 nights a week, they are so vivid that he has punched the wall, screams and kicks and ha fallen of the bed. We no longer sleep in the same bedroom since I got hurt once, he has also injured himself. Now he is trying to stop the effexor gradually. I really hope that his nightmares will stop. Now the doctor has him on ABILIFY 15 mg. and he is also starting LAMICTAL. I hope this new meds will work.
