I'm so happy I found this site. I've been thinking I'm crazy or just getting old for the last 3 years while on Yasmin. I started taking it at age 29 and almost immediately after started having mood swings, extreme irritability and depression. I had previously been on Ortho Tri Cyclen and the Ortho Cyclen before Yasmin and was on them for MANY years and never had one side effect. I only switched in the first place because I like to have very very few periods and I run all my active pills together to forgo periods very often and I was having breakthrough on the Cyclen. Hence, the Yasmin trial. I'm actually a doctor (which is why I CANNOT have frequent periods with all the accompanying issues), but I didn't even realize the possible connection between IBS and Yasmin. This needs to be studied and taken seriously. I never once had IBS symptoms until a few months after starting Yasmin. Now, 3 years later I have almost constatnt trouble, to the point everytime I eat I run for the bathroom, yet my weight has never been higher. I asked a GYN friend at work if they could be related and she said definitely no, but reading all of these "real life" examples, coupled with my own experience has made me think otherwise. Often, the symptoms will occur shortly after taking the pill, even when I haven't yet eaten breakfast. It's crazy!! I'm going to switch either back to Ortho Cyclen or to something new ASAP and will report back. I'm both excited at the thought that my "IBS" might really be Yasmin related but also scared that it might not go away and therefore might really be IBS. I'll report back... It honestly never entered my mind that all of it could be the Yasmin. I had just moved, started a new job in a town I hate and I thought it was all stress related. I've also had an interesting side effect no one has mentioned yet- my hair texture has dramatically changed. It isn't falling out, but has gone from VERY curly with a nice soft spiral curl pattern to very dry, straight and hard to manage. Nothing else has changed and now I'm wondering if it's not the DRSP. If pergnant women can have hair changes, why not women on the pill?? It's all hormones. As always with a drug, there are always possible side effects. No one drug is perfect, and humans are so complex in their make up and they way they process drugs. Therefore, please don't judge your family docs or GYNs too harshly as not even the best doctor in the world can predict every side effect.

I wanted to add also that this makes sense now that I think throught the physiology. Yasmin mimics an SSRI effect, thereby increasing the amount of serotonin in your body. Serotonin is good for depression, but not good for astric motility as it speeds everything digestion-related into overdrive. So theroetcially it makes sense that people prone to IBS-like symptoms would have a dramtic increase while on Yasmin. Unfortunately, no way to realize one is prone to this type of thing until one has already taken it. Never made the connection until recently but makes perfect sense.

i was put on the pill 4 moths ago..but before i was i was in the er a few times for bad stomach pains...the GI doctor said it could be IBS.. so we thought of a way to make it better, and then my GYN suggested i go birth control for the other problem i was having not bc i was active or anything its my hormones were off balance.. now being on the pill i think if i did have IBS its worse and better.. i dont get worse stomach pains but my diet has changed completely.. and i too got to the bathroom within 15 minutes of eating.. good luck!

hello,i agree with your post that we should not judge our doctors/health care providers too harshly, the human body is indeed a very complicated thing and one mans cure is another mans poison (or womans in the case of yasmin!)
i can totally relate to the ibs link. i suffered ibs about 14 years ago, mainly stress related but also some dietry problems too.it had not been a problem again until i started yasmin,i was put on it by my gp after the birth of my second child.within 3 months i would have attacks of diahrroea and sickness that i did not link to my pill then i would get constant attacks of diahrroea, that then started to trigger panic attacks, then it escalated into a feeling of constant anxiety then agoraphobia.my gp would not listen to me when i told him there was nothing wrong in my life,i was happy, settled enjoying motherhood, ate a good diet and no finacial worries....he told me i had panic disorder and sent me away with some diazepam (which made me worse!)

i do not blame my doctor for the diagnosis and subsequent lack of treatment but what i do feel let down about is that he would not even entertain the idea that yasmin could have caused all my problems. i consider it proof it was the yasmin because i have been off it for a year now and in that time my ibs has vanished again, the panic attacks have stopped as have the constant anxiety although i still have a fear of going out of my safety zone but that is just learnt behaviour that i am working on undoing.
i really hope that your ibs will clear once you stop taking yasmin,it seems to be a really common side effect....

with regards to your second post about your hair, mine went from straight to curly and really dry, then it started falling out in clumps it would also have some really unpredictable results when coloured.my friend actually made the link to hormones as she is a hairdresser and said the reason they don't like to colour pregnant womens hair is because it can be unpredictable due to the hormes being all over the place.

i have no idea exactly how this pill interacts with our bodies but on another support site for yasmin side effect sufferers we speculate that it causes some kind of adrenal fatigue due to the effects it has on the adrenal glands and our fluid levels etc.

if you would like to come and have a look at the other site for more opinions, chat and advice etc the link is.

I think you're all NOT crazy. If your side effects started after taking Yasmin, there are so many other kinds of birth control, even tons of other homonal forms, not to mention the non-hormonal forms, that it just doesn't make sense to "put up with it" or "you'll have to live with it". Maybe you don't!! If you never go off it, how do you know what it was? And why, as a doctor, would you prescribe a med to treat a side effect of another med? Makes no sense. For me, in my practice, the less meds I prescribe the better. I only give out what people truly need. Please don't sell yourselves short and if your doctor won't listen- find a new doctor! I'm know I'm trying something either new, or going back on what I was on before and hope like heck all these weird side effects go away....

I actually called my gyno because after taking my pill the next time I'd eat I would get sick...I've been taking them for just over a year so she swore it wasn't my pills. She says I'm probably just pregnant or have a GI problem! I can't be pregnanat if I wasn't even having sex when this started and my "GI problem" magically goes away the week I'm not taking my medicine. I don't know what to do because she swears it's not my medicine but I am so tired of getting sick after I eat and it's embarassing when I can't go out with my boyfriend because I get sick. Is it possible to have side effects after a year? Or is it something else? And what do I do if my doctor doesn't want to help?

wow i have been on yasmin for 2 yrs now and have just now realized at this moment in time why i have such horrible IBS it MUST be from Yasmin!! i can't go out to eat without running into the bathroom at the restaraunt and if i am lucky i can make it home and run in the door strait to the bathroom. Also, i have never relaly had any side effects until last week i seemed to have lost some of my libido all of a sudden and now i have been extremely depressed and have bad anxiety.. I dont feel like myself..i feel like i am here but my emotions are not.. i am lost and confused. I have decided to stop taking yasmin and see how i do ..i also made an appointment with my family doctor to see what she thinks

I just wanted to share my story with you so that you will know that you are not alone. Last year I started taking Yasmin to try and regulate my periods after the birth of my third child. A couple of months into it, I started to develop IBS symptoms. My IBS got so bad over the next few months that I went to a GI Specialist and had every test run in the world. Had a possible tumor scare, which ended up just being a bad CAT Scan reading. After all was said and done, my GI tract looked great, the doctor didn't have any answers, but I was hospitalized to treat a kidney infection that I got thanks to all the IBS trips to the bathroom. I was also gaining weight yet afraid to eat.
After I returned home from the hospital I sat down to retrace my steps over the past 6 months. I had already researched the other medication that I had been taking and decided that I was pretty sure it was not the culprit. I always spend way more time reading real life accounts and not just what the labels say. All of a sudden the light bulb came on and I asked myself why didn't I ever do this with the Yasmin. I guess I just always thought it was BCP...harmless...and didn't think of it again as the reason. After all, I had taked Ortho Novum 777 for years without any problems. I started reading horror stories just like mine, and could not believe it! I quit taking the Yasmin and just like that, within 2-3 days, my symptoms were gone! When I told my doctor what had happened he said he still did not believe it was the Yasmin. I am 100% convinced it was. These meds can do different things to different people. My brother went through a same situation for 3 years of agony and frustration and doctors appointments until he finally realized his symptoms were being caused by a weight gainer he was drinking. His IBS got so bad he was afraid to leave the house because whenever he did he would have an attack. I wish there was a way to make people aware of these possibilities. There may be a lot of people that are suffering from IBS due to medication. That was probably the worst experience of my life, and I wish I had found out sooner.
Anyway, I just happen to come across this site and felt that I had to share my story with you. I know you posted back in July, but I really hope that you read this to ease your mind.

I thank you all for sharing your stories. It's eerie how similar they are to mine. There has to be something to this. I've been off Yasmin for abuot 2 and a half months now and my IBS is completely gone! Incidentally, I started a B vitamin and really feel a big difference that can't be imaginary. I did some research and some OCPs can really deplete your B vitamins, so consider supplementing if you think it's right for you.

If you think it could be Yasmin, switch! It's made a world of difference for me. No pill is perfect, but some are definitely better than others. Keep after your doc if they won't switch you. There's no harm in trying a different pill. Good luck!!!

This is about my daughter. She is 23, been on Yasmin a few years, married 2 years ago. A year ago started to have IBS symptoms, doctor run a ton of tests, colonoscopy, endoscopy included. They found nothing. She lost 25 pounds, her BMI is 15. Cannot eat meat, most of the vegetables without running in the bathroom Does this sound familiar for somebody?

sounds very familar mammamia....
i stopped taking Yasmin about a week and a 1/2 ago. I was taking it for approxiamately 6 months. I have developed IBS symptoms. Bad bloating, flatulence and constantly needing to dash to the toilet. My stomach is constantly gurgling and upset. It seems its attributed to Yasmin. Happy to be off the stuff but praying my gut gets back to normal. Not sure what to do because it is still extreamly sensitive even being off Yasmin.
