I have been taking toprol xl for approximately 9 mos. It was givien to me for rapid heart beat. My dosage has been doubled twice so that I am on 50 mg. I hate this medicine. I still have some rapid heart beat, I wake up every two hours at night, my legs hurt, and I have gained 20 lbs. I also wonder if it is this medicine that makes me sweat profusely. When I am doing yard work, or anything else in the summer heat, the water just pours off of me. I have never been a heavy sweater and I am out of doors all of the time. I want to get off of this stuff. Can I wean myself off by lowering the dosage a week at a time?

Hello, I'm in the same boat, but have been on it for two years. I have learned the hard way it may not be so easy to 'wean' yourself off of this medication, and for some may even be dangerous. It has been warned on several websites that this medication tends to have what is termed a 'rebound effect', therefore most have advised that you have help from your doctor regarding discontinuation. When I tried cutting back on my dosage from 50mg to 25mg I started having even worse angina and felt bad in general. I am in fact going next week to see a doctor to further discuss this issue, and if they have anything worthy of sharing I'll write back.
All I know to say is be careful, and good luck.

I've been on Toprol for over five years and if this med has been causing all my sweating problems I'm going to be real pissed, cuz I keep getting told its menopause. The sweat just pours off my head and down my face with the least exertion and the rest of my body is dry. I know what a hot flash feels like and this isnt it. Thank you for posting so I know I'm not alone.

I feel your pain I am on this 50 toporol then down to 25 my doctor is weaning me off. I was doing ok on it a year into it then I noticed the following year on it my hair thinned out and I too packed on weight and I never had a weight problem. I am on Spirolonate now for BP and it is supposed to help with weight gain I hope it works cause toporol was and is awful I wish I had known.

I have been on Toprol XL 100mg. for 3 years. My sweating is out of this world but I never thought it could be a side effect of the medcation until now. However, I was suffering from shortness of breath, and the neumologist said it could be related to Toprol so my cardiologist gradually reduced the dose until I am no longer taking it effective today. Benefits: I was suffering from incontinency due to urgency (couldn't wait to go) and I am now fine, also no shortness of breath in the last three days (reduced to 25mg.)I hope I can now loose weight. I am feeling so much better. If only I had known......
