I have just come across this site, while looking to find out why I have been experiencing heart palpitations for the past two months - out of the blue!!! and usually "exercise" induced. I had some tests and have been told they are Premature Atrial Contractions "PACs". I started taking Yasmin in April, after having tried others over the past year (tri-cyclen lo and alesse) which did not work for me as the progestin was not strong enough. I am in my 40s and never took the pill before. Yasmin was great, it significantly reduced my "physical" pms (severe inflamation, severe bloating, severe sore breasts) which I experience for 2-3 weeks a month. However, sometime in mid to late June, I started getting palpitations/tremors out of the blue. The first episode freaked me out and lasted for about two weeks. At first I thought it was allergy medication mixed with my thyroid med, which can happen - but I cut out the allergy meds and still got them. They seem to come about 6hrs to a day after I fexercise/figure skate and they last from 2 to 5 five days. It's very irritating and nerve wracking, and I feel very agitated. I am also out of breath more than usual when walking up stairs, a little light headed and have some tightness in the chest. My legs also are weak, which makes no sense given my exercise regimen. I then lowered my thyroid replacement from .125 synthroid to .100 - too much thyroid med can cause some palpitations. Anyone who has mistakenly taken a second thyroid pill having forgotten that they already took one will understand. Even with the lower dose I am still getting the palpilations. I am totally at a loss as to why all of a sudden this is happening to me (perhaps perimenopause??). I have had the odd flutter here and there in my live, but nothing like this. It just doesn't make any sense ag ll. Can one's health just change like this overnight?. I am otherwise healthy, slim, have "lower" blood pressure (apprx 100-90/70-60)I skate 3 to 5 times a week, I have a full time job and yes I do push myself, but this is getting ridiculous. The only thing I can attribute it to is the Yasmin, ... but my symptoms only started after a few months not instantly, whereas it would seem that most of the the women here noticed the side effects faster. I hate to stop the Yasmin because I will have to return to pms "hell", but I suppose I will give it a try to see if the palpitations subside. At this point, I have been offered a low dose "beta blocker" and have refused. I am stunned to think that all of a sudden I have heart issues, especially since my Dr has always kidded me my that I will never have heart problems with my blood pressure. I will stop the Yasmin tonight and post another message in a few weeks one it is out my system. Here's hoping it is the Yasmin. KarenSkaterGirl

hi,your heart problems are more than likely related to yasmin, i took it for 6 months with 5 months with no side effects that i linked to this pill all though i am sure they were a few,i know my IBS flared up. by the 6th month on yasmin i experienced a strange episode with my heart,i was sat at my pc doing nothing in particular when all of a sudden i felt really dizzy and almost like i had pins and needles all over then bam...my heart starting racing like you would not believe,i honestly thought i was having a heart attack,i staggered to my front door to call my husband then promptly rushed round to my gp...they did an ecg and said that everything was fine and prescribed beta blockers to ease the palpitations, when it continued to happen they told me i had an anxiety disorder and tried to fob me off with benzodiazepines......needless to say i thought that was not a correct diagnosis and searched for other reasons for this,i found this site and stopped yasmin,i have been off it now for 14 months and have never had another episode since the 1st month i stopped taking yasmin...coincidence??? i think not!
i would seriously consider stopping taking this pill if i were you,if it affecting you like this now given time there is no telling what may happen,as i understood it yasmin was not recommended for women over 35? maybe it is different where you live.
best wishes to you whatever you decide to do,maybe you could consider some natural therapies for perimenopausal symptoms? there is a great site called womantowoman,if you google it you should get the right site.

In response to KarenSkaterGirl. I'm with you on this. My heart palpitations did not start immmediately either. I'm currently on my third pack (2nd week) and since yesterday it seems the palpitations have been almost constant. I'm not even working for fear of having a heart attack. Yesterday I was basically sitting around all day for fear of doing anything strenuous and still had the palpitations. I went to the doc this morning and told him my side effects and was told to stop immediately. If I didn't feel any better by Thursday than come back and they will have to do an EKG to find out what's wrong. I'll keep you posted to see if things improve by Friday.

Thank you both ( alohaallens and flowerbabies) for your kind replies. It is much appreciated. It has now been 3 days that I stopped Yasmin (since I wrote last Friday). I feel noticeably better - I think... , but did have some remnant palps on Saturday. I will only know once I work out again and will monitor the next while as this drug gets out of my system. However, I do notice that the oppressive feeling I had in my chest seems to have dissipated. I will write another note in a week or so. Best wishes, thanks again.

Hi Karenskatergirl, i take thyroxine, 50mcg every alternate day . Been getting palpitations with weak trembling legs on and off since February.Went for ecg , all normal, Dr put me on beta blocker which helped but made me wheezy and coughing al the time. I do not suffer from asthma, out of breath and tired so decided to wean myself off. been off it for 6weeks. The cough and wheeze is completely gone. I am in my 40's , walk every day and do light weights , have a full time job and not overly stressed . The palpitations still comes ,I'm normally weak and cold after and feel like death. Like you , it is a mystery. Just hope I could be the same person again. My doctor says nothing will happen but it sure feels like death.
All the best . Hope you feel better soon.

The heart palpitations can be a side effect of this drug. And exercising can leave you very short of breath. I am a 26 year old former athlete who used to ride a bike 45 minutes a day. I was on this pill for less than a month and decided to take a quick bike ride. I was a couple minutes into the ride and was struggling to breathe, move, etc. I continued on for the 45 minutes and when I got home, I thought I was having a heart attack. I originally chalked it up to the fact that I hadn't rode the bike in a couple weeks and my body was not used to it. Then as time went on, it dawned on me that this dang pill as causing an enormous amount of side effects and as I read through them, I could check every single one of them off.

It usually subsides after about 2 months and I only know this because I experienced all of that and it finally died down for the most part. I have been off this medication for 2 weeks and don't plan on returning to it. I was on for about 5 months before I really experienced every single side effect that the documentation list. Some people experience problems with taking birth control in general, however, I firmly believe there is something very seriously wrong with this particular one and shouldn't be disbursed. Doctors are failing to tell women what this can actually do to your body. Take a proactive approach, research and have your doctor do blood work and run tests. Also, evaluate if it's something other than this medication that could be causing your problems. My problem was this medication.....it is slowly becoming apparent that this drug is not safe for women.

If your doctor tells you it has nothing to do with this pill, know that they are not disclosing the truth. The makers of this drug have contributed major side effects such as heart palpitations and signs of stroke. Only you know your body and how it has changed. I just hope I can get back to normal, including my hair which has dramatically fallen out because of this. Trust your gut and what it's telling you.

Yes mam. I agree totally. I have the same symptoms and now have to wear a heart monitor!!!!! Only pharmacists understand the replecations of drugs. 1) I lost my baby (had a miscarriage) because the doc didn't realize that I was suppose to be on a bc pill with spironloactone. Then I was put on Yazmine & spironolactone (mind you these were the only drugs I have been on) BUT Yaz already has a high dose of potassium and I wasn't drinking enough water, etc. and along with the spiro. I got hyperkalmia & nearly died. NOW I am on 15 mg of spiro and ortho tri cyclen NOT Yasmin.

Ldies, please go to the doc if you get even the slightest symptoms on this new drug Yas. Doctor nowadays are not as educated when it comes to interactions and side effects. Insurace plays an important part. Even my cardiologist said he had never heard of Yasmin causing hear ireegularties!! It even says it in the FINE print. Doctors dont do their research. Only one person cares more about yourself and that is you. I almost died ladies because the potassium level on 50 mg was too high for me. I had dry mouth, leg cramps in one leg and diahrea for 5 days straight all they told me to do was stop the med. Well, stopping the Yaz & sprionolactone abruptly can also be dangerous. They should have told me to come in for a visit and would have seen that my potassium levels were too high.

I too thought about my Levethroxin interacting with my Yasmin, I had been on Yasmin for years, but never had any side effects until recently...I am a horrible controller of my thyroid problem and do not take my medication faithfully as I should (I know, I have heard all the lectures), but the leg weakness and cramps are increasing causing much anxiety and a feeling of an adrenaline rush I cannot control. I can't sleep and in turn this makes me very cranky...very very cranky, but yet I am fine at work, it is the kids that all of a sudden, I have no patience for when I get home...

Have you thought about adrenal problems affecting your thyroid, which can cause palpitations due to an inability to process your thyroid meds properly? There's some good information at http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art40498.asp

Hope this helps
