38y.o F taking toprol 100mg once a day for hypertension x 15mths ...

Get off the stuff asap!!!!!!!! Look up... rhabdomyolysis... this is what can happen to you....Toporal has same side effects as Statiin drugs....such as Lipitor, Crestor, etc. I took Lipitor for 7 days and have never walked unaided since...have to use a walker. It destroys the muscles in you arms and legs particularly. and has a lot more of little "side-effects". Doctors will not admit this. I went to five doctors, including the one that gave it to me (and the Toporal, believe it or not!) when I went back after the Lipitor he said I had bursitis and gave me a shop of steriod in each hip. I went to four other doctors and they all gave me the run around. I found one doctor who had taken the stuff himself and said he hadn't been able to get his arms over his head for four months.
Maybe some people come out of it....i don't know. I know my life is over as far as ever going and doing again...it has been four years. And no cure i know. Bringing a laws suit against a doctor in NC is impossible, the company that makes Liptor had 5,000 cases filed against it.....and beat them all...clever lawyers and fact they warn you...lets them off. Interesting to note, however, ...I found a patent issued in 1998 for Co-enzyme Q10 taken out by the mfg of Lipitor which advised doctors to prescribe this (otc..over the counter) med for patients taking Statin drugs to counteract this effect. Mine never mentioned it (probably wouldn't make money over and OCT) But I bought it and tried it "after the fact" and it did not help me. Good Luck. But look up every single thing you are prescribed and when it says, "the benifit may outweight the risks" Don't take it.!!!!
I was given Vioxx and spent 3 days in a hospital. A doctor has now prescribed Lyrica for my peripheral neuropathy...I checked it. It can also result in rhabdomyloysis!!!!!!!!! P.S. anything called a beta-blocker....watch out for. There was supposed to have been a big investigation in to beta blockers last February because of the dangers....haven't heard a word since. But the Lipitor, Crestor and that family and Lyrica and Toporal are still grinning at you via the tube and spending millions in advertising!

Reply to your posting : I have been on toprol xl for 4yrs, the drug has distroyed my life. and well being! iv had every side effect listed and more! this drug is one Nasty bad drug to take! I have tryed and asked 4 diffrent m.d Doctors to get me off this medication, or change it to another brand or type of beta blocker. however all Doctors refuse me. This is common the more I read about Toporl xl. I belive its the fear of harm the drug can do, when getting off it to fast, or withdrawal symptoms it causes! ( it does cause withdrawal symptoms. as iv tryed on my own before - to no luck! it gets you hooked ! the Generic form of toprol xl is a real stinker to take ! it has way more side effects and causes Angina and cramping and other pains and problems! beware of that drug ! Im now going threw a known and lesser told side effect from long term use of toprol xl - low blood sugar
it came on without warrning and iv now been threw 2 diffrent blood tests and im waiting for the final ansure from the Doctors . meantime I suffer and have to fight this problem daily. if ever there was a Evil drug to take, Toprol xl is the one ! to be honest folks - it has caused harm to me and the more I read here and online , it has done the same to other people as well. this was caused by non careing and pill pushing Doctors. quacks!

I plan to seek help. as due to this problem I have now, I can not work and my life has gone to the dogs, anyone got the same problems from toprol xl or diovan ? I smell malpractice here ! do you ??

Thank you for your reply!! I did stop taking this med w/o tapering off of it. I did not experience any major side effects. However, my doctor didn't support my decision. I now only take 12.5mg of Hztz because I'm sensitive to sodium. It hasn't helped my BP.
First, I have lost 11lbs without trying, my swelling is all but gone, and I can now wear my shoes. I do feel a lot better without it.
Since my BP is boderline 143/95. I want to try to get it down naturally w/ diet and exercise. I eat lots of fiber and have a colorful diet w/ fresh fruits and veggies. NOTHING from a can.
I believe that doctor's get some sort of payoff to push meds that are currently on the market. Years ago, it was unheard of to advertise prescription meds. Now, there all over the place. It is a big money market.
I work in Medicine, however, I do not have the authority to write prescriptions. I believe it's given out more often due to a financial kickback. I don't necessisarly believe it's a malpractice issue. Thanks again!!!!!

I too have been plagued with aches and pains and dizziness. I take one .25 in the AM and 2 of them at night. I have constant pain in the left side and indigestion. I have eye problems and lack of balance. I need something sweet every 3 hours or I feel weak. I need to find something else.
