I am 43 (female) and have been on Singulair for a couple of month...

I am 43 (female) and have been on Singulair for a couple of months now and the benefits have been AMAZING! I have chronic generalized eczema and pronounced facial flushing which led to swelling and Rosacea. Since starting Singulair (with a Zantac and Reactine) my skin is almost always cool (it's been YEARS). The benefits for me have been as great as what the steroids do for my skin. I can tolerate more triggers and the freedom and self-esteem boost is unquestionably life changing. But recently I started to bruise, over every-little-thing -- even a blood pressure cup created a ring of broken blood vessels. Then about 3 - 4 weeks ago I started getting deep lower leg pain, and cramping in my calves and arches. This grew more regular, and my hips joined in and I am now rarely without the pain and deep aches. Then the weakness started, it was most pronounced in my dominant hand, I can hardly write or hold a pen now. Typing is difficult now as my hands and forearms are so weak. Yesterday I couldn't pinch my fingers to pick up a potatoe chip! My arches are curled with aches, I am weak all over and getting really uncoordinated. Going up the stairs is a chore, going down is just wacky -- it's harder than going up I am so wobbly and my knees want to give out. It's getting so pronounced that I realized that this must due to something I'm taking and the only thing I'm taking new is Singulair so I decided to Google "Singulair Side Effects" and the first link I clicked was Carrie's post, which I replied too. Then I realized there was more and have been reading all the other posts. I am grateful that it is just side effects and nothing more sinister. This weekend the accumulated symptoms had me a bit frightened. I was washing my hands and it felt like I sprained my fingers doing it. The ligaments just sort of let go and things began bending the wrong way. It happened when I bent over to put something in the dishwasher, it was like the rib cage lost it's shape for a moment (I don't know how else to describe it). THAT felt bizarre and got my attention. Not being able to pinch my fingers to pick up a chip was the final clue that something is going wrong here. I will stop taking the Singulair now. It's a shame this happened, it was really doing it's job for me. The price of the side effects is too high though.

It just breaks my heart what I have put my wife through and not checking the side effects of a drug called Singulair. My wife has conic back pain, and also has asthma. The doctor prescribed Singulair for her 5 years ago and we never realized that her health has been constantly getting worse since then. One side effect she experienced that became devastatingly painful was the body aches she experienced. Her fingers, wrists, legs feet toes shoulders and any other joint in her body became more and more painful with time. Her skin ached and “burned” all of the time to the point that she no longer wanted to live.

Something made me stop all of her medications, and we started one by one again. Thankfully we did not start her medications up again with Singulair being the first drug on the list. We started with something that seemed more essential. Her condition improved day by day while she was off the Singulair. About three weeks later when we added the Singulair to the list of meds she needed to take, about two days later her symptoms of general body aches and pain started to increase. By the third day of taking Singulair, she wanted to die again. It took an additional three days to get her back to normal without suffering the body aches and pain. Her joint pain mimicked severe arthritis pain and swelling.

All I can say is please beware of Singulair. I am sure it works just fine for some people, but in the case of my wife, it was almost fatal. BTW my wife is now 44 years old. She first started taking Singulair when she was 39.

Dear Toledo Pilot,

I am glad that you discovered the source of what was affecting your wife's health and well being.

I have been off the Singulair for over 3 weeks now and am finally feeling better. The deep pain and ache side effects slowly went away within the first week and by the second week I was left with generalized weakness but no more pain. In my third week my strength was coming back, I could hold a full teapot, but I had no stamina even for a short walk. Now I am in my 4th week and I am getting some vigor back. I went for my first walk yesterday and was able to walk at a gentle pace for about 20 minutes -- no hills or inclines though, I'm not up to that just yet. I am saddened that such a helpful medication could rob me of my life-force like Singulair did. It just was NOT worth it.
