I am a 27 y/o male in good physical condition (i did a triathlon 2 months ago) I was prescribed levaquin 750mg a week ago for an throat infection and fever. After the first dose I had sever abdominal pain (like someone was stabbing me). After the 3rd dose my back started to hurting and my calf's cramped up. I stopped the medication immediately. It has been 5 days since I stopped the medication and I have a burning sensation on my back. It is on both sides and stretches around toward my stomach. It feels like I have bad sunburn but there is no redness, swelling or discoloration. I also still have fever and muscle spasms all over my body (mostly in my legs). I went to my doctor yesterday and he is running a bunch of blood testes and I hope he can find a way to treat the symptoms. Does anyone know how long this should last? I just want it to go away so I can get on with my life. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

I am replying to the 27 yr old male who had just done a triathlon and took the doses of Levaquin.
I'm afraid what you are experiencing is a condition called floxing. Not that many people know about it and most doctors either don't know about it or don't believe that it exists. It's caused by taking fluoroquinolone antibiotics, one of which is Levaquin. You are lucky that you only took the medication for three days, however, I'm afraid that your problems have only just begun.
For most people the "calf cramping" is actually the calf muscle tearing. You might want to check that out. Maybe your pain tolerance is higher than you think.
Some people say that their condition worsens over time and some say that things only get slightly better.
Most people report different levels of pain and the inability to perform normally or the way that they use to. Many people also report brain fog.
I'm going to give you a website with the most info that I've found on floxing. I highly recommend that you read as much as you can from this website, print it out, and take it to your doctor! I am sorry that you have to experience this condition! Hopefully one of these days, they'll take these antibiotics off the market, or at least warn people before they take them!

Oh GOD! This is freaky. I had epidiymitis from a urinary tract infection and was put on 750 Levaquin5 days then 500 five more days. Immediately had leg weakness-they then put me back on it for 20 days more. i have been off for almost 2 weeks and just spent the day in ER. Had every test done to figure out why I have horrible burning in my lower back stretching accross to my belly button, so bad I cant sit too long-Doctors have no answer-I did nothing to injure myself-Leg cramps-and stress. Im confused what to think.--BRAD
