I've been taking atenolol 6 months now and my basic complaint is the coughing. I have to practically sit up in bed at night. At first I thought it was just the usual summertimer postnasal drip causing the cough so I put up with it. Have to take ricoloas or some kind of drops all day to keep the cough down. I've heard other pills like this all come with the cough. If there is another that DOESN'T maybe someone can get back to me a nd let me know. I have a doctor who isn't very communicative but if I complain about something he does what he can to try something else. This time, however, I'm doing my own research and so far have come up with zip as to any replacement. In fact, my blood pressure isn't much better. Was in the office for another reason the other day and it read 138/100. Thanks!

My step-daughter started developing a constant couogh and almost ended up at a pulominary doctors office because nothing worked, by chance she ran out of atenelol and in a few days no more cough she hasn't coughed since. I hope this helps you. You might try natural herbs to keep your blood pressure down and see if they help.

In the Uk Atenolol is not advised for Blood Pressure anymore as a main line treatment like it used to be. Research and guidelines a year or so ago found it not very cost effective or as effective compared to other meds. If you are below 55 years old ask about ACE inhibitors and if you are over 55 yrs old ask about Bendrofluazide (Diuretic Therapy) or a Calcium Channel blocker medication. Beta Blockers like Atenolol are really only used so much now as a final addition to other meds to help very high BP, intolerance to other meds or if the patient has a history of heart attack or fast heart rate. Obviously other countries may view medications differently but its worth changing if they are not doing great for you or at least thinking about adding another med to your routine if your BP is not well controlled.
