I must add my recent experience with Prednisone to this forum: I have been suffering from constant lower back pain and a torn shoulder injury (rotator cuff) for the last several years. A week ago I got a slight case of Poison Ivy. My doctor gave me Prednisone - starting at 60 mgs. a day, tapering down to 10 over 12 days. I was unsure as to whether I wanted to be on a steroid , especially after reading some of the testimonies here at this forum. But I went ahead and took it. I must say this has been one of the most amazing experiences for me. Not only did my Poison Ivy immediately begin to go away, but lo and behold, practically ALL my back pain and shoulder pain went away. I also found myself with this amazing positive mental attitude. I began to get up and enjoy my job everyday (normally I am somewhat depressed and stressed out). It was such a major change for the better - I feel like I have been living the resurrection!! Yet I know it is only due to absence of pain and increased energy brought on by the Prednisone. I feel like a happier, younger version of myself. Prednisone has even helped me sleep better! So, evidently, for some people, prednisone is a wonder-drug. I did note a very slight manic edge at times, but never unmanageable and always very positive. As soon as I decrease the dose, the pain and inflammation in my back and shoulder starts to return. What a shame that this drug causes osteoporosis and other long-term affects. I wish I could stay on it forever!!

Yes, it is a shame, because it is a very effective medication, at least at first. Culmative side effects show up later. Such as with my mom, she was like you, sleep great, had energy, etc. but later the insomnia and tiredness side effect started up along with the many other effects I listed in other posts here. I didn't mention in other posts that she's also had to have cataract surgery too as a result. She also suffered a TIA from the estrogen the doc tried to offset the bone density loss which ultimately didn't work anyway.

Heres a tip, apparentely fish oil is an anti-inflammatory as well as blood thinning supplement. Maybe you could try fish oil in your diet. As with all natural therapies, the benefits are subtle at first and take some time to work, they are not as instant or quick as medications, but there effects are lasting whereas not always the case with meds. Good luck..

HI,

Yeah I agree with cookiecndy,

Prednisone seems like a wonderful drug at first until they start to lower the dose and you get withdrawal and then you get all the other things with it :)

The doctor should never have put you on prednisone for poison ivy. What a stupid thing to do :(

The doctors hand out prednisone as if it is a lolly these days. Never mind that it is causing so many severe health problems :)

Also try fish oils. They do work but you have to take them for at least six months before they take the problem away :)

My only credentials for telling you this is that i was on prednisone for ten years and went through absolute hell, both on it and off it :)

Good luck
