PLEASE REPLY! ok i wrote on this board about a month ago, and i was complaining about all the horrible side effects i was having.....however things have gotten much much worse since then, and i must admit that i have been bad. very bad. i am secretly winging myself off of the steroids b/c I cannot handle the depression and not being myself anymore... I've been on Prednisone for a year now and started winging myself from 15mg when I last wrote on here to now 10 mg... my hair is falling out in HUGE clumps, and I am NOT overexaggerating when I say I am going bald... does anyone know if this could be from tapering the drug, or would you say it is probably because of my condition possibly returning from tapering the drug too low???? I just want to know if IMMENSE hair loss is affiliated with steroids...I have not seen anyone else mention anything.

I found this link above, hope it helps. Also, you might be tapering too fast. I am not a doctor so I cannot provide professional advice; however, I read one doctor on the internet mentioned tapering only 1 mg. at a time and that dose should be taken for at least 2-3 weeks. So according to that, you shouldn't already be on 10 mg. after only one month tapering. Seems this med should be tapered ultra slow...worth the wait to do it right and be done with it.

I have been on a high dose of prednisone for almost 7 months now and have been tapering down. As I taper off of prednisone, I have been experiencing extreme hair loss too. I could make a wig with the amount of hair that I've lost. I've heard that hair loss during the tapering down period is not uncommon. The body, or perhaps it's the hair follicle, is going into a kind of shock/stress is and reacting to the decreased amount of the drug. I was ready to shave my hair and get a wig. Instead, I just got a very short hair cut for now.

HI,

I was on prednisone for ten years and have been off it for three years.
I went through absolute hell when i was coming off it.

I had severe mood swings, my face would puff up, my stomach would puff up, a lot of my hair had already fallen out so i had to get hair extensions, my joints became very sore.

Basically what is happening to you is that your body is trying to produce its own cortisone. When you get on the prednisone it shuts down your adrenal glands so that your body is not producing its own cortisone anymore. The doctors like to take you down off it slowly so that your body can start to produce its own cortisone again. I would be taking it down by 5 mg at a time.

Be prepared this is not going to be an easy ride. Your body is going to go through adrenal crisis as it tries to work out how much cortisone to produce.

When I first started to go through it, I started throwing up and could not keep anything down. It was awful.

I suggest that you either go and find yourself a good endocrinologist or you do what i did which was to take huge amounts of magnesium and calcium and protein.

You see the body for some reason needs more of these things when it is going through this stage. What I had to do was to take magnesium in a powder form so that when I drank it, it hit me straight away. I also took a protein, vitamin and mineral supplement which gave me the calcium.

To deal with the sore joints, I took fish oils and after a period of six months I stopped being so sore sore taht I could barely walk.

Everytime I felt sick or faint I would take the supplements and so they got me through until the next time. Every month my body would try to work out the adrenal problem and every month i would feel sick. Sometimes I would start twitching.

Anyway eventually it calmed down. I now only get this sort of thing every four months.

So it is going to take a long time for your body to work itself out. You have to be patient. I also saw a naturopath and she helped me more than any doctor.

I am not trying to sell stuff so if you want to know the name of the stuff i took or anything else then e-mail me at paperworkfairy@gmail.com

Hope that this helps,

good luck,

I have been off and on prednisone for over ten years now. I have recently been on it non-stop for over a year now. I am currently on 10mg. We have started to increase my Imuran in an effort to decrease the prednisone even further. However, I have recently had clumps of hair come out. I don't know if it is the prdnisone or the increase in Imuran, but I do feel your pain! I had to go by me some hair!
