I am a 56 year old female who was very active ranching, balng hay taking care of irrigation etc. 3 years ago I had pain in my left arm and my heart was racing went to the E.R. where they did a 12 lead ekg. Could not find anything wrong other than my blood pressure was up to 160/90 they gave me ToprolXl 100 mg and told me to see my primary care physcian. Which I did. He continued the medication. Since that time I have complained to all of the symtoms I have seen on this site. With one exception. Two months ago I was watching TV and had double vision. It only lasted for a few seconds but noticed the next day my peripheral vision was gone. I made an appt with an opthomologist and he spent 3 hours with me and recommended an MRI which was conducted some 2 weeks later. I was referred to a neurologist who ran a lot of blood work. My first batch of blood work showed a raging inflamation. They started testing for MS, lymes, lupus etc. Last week i met with my neurologist for the follow up blood work report. Everything is normal he says but by the way you have myathenia gravis. You get double vision again you call me I will give you medicine. Like I am a two year old. I have researched myasthenia and the one thing you dont want to do is be on a beta blocker or a calcium channel blocker, as both of these will aggravate the condition. I called him to ask that he change my blood pressure medication. He says I wont do that. My primary care physcian is no longer in practice with the original medical group and has left the area. I saw him only 2 weeks ago and nothing was mentioned. The point is folks Don't trust anyone. Oh and by the way the side effects you are seeing mimic myasthenia gravis. Now no one knows what causes it for sure. Stress is a factor. But if you have not been tested get yourself tested. I may not even have this disease but I am getting off this medication and I am going to find out for sure what in the heck is going on. By the way I have seen a cardiologist last month without a referral because I wanted answers and he says there is absolutely nothing wrong with my heart...so why was I put on this medication? Heaven help us all.

Reply back to rawson : Toprol xl and Toprol a person must be weened off the medication slow and by a Doctor. it takes time and must be done correct.
I know as I tryed it 3 times and couldnt do it alone. the withdrawal effects are very harsh! remember 100mg's is a big amount to take. be safe get help.
if you go off too fast, heartattack or stroke can happen. its a Nasty drug !
and I wonder why doctors hand this drug out like Candy.

I agree with you on the doctors today, how they treat the people and rush and do little to help us all. Hmo doctors are the worst ! how can anyone get help or care in 10 to 15mins.. its insane !

I got low blood sugar and Anemia from toprol xl (generic) after taking it for 4days without knowing it was Generic.. talk about a side effect to get !
now iv been to 3 doctors and talked to 2 Rn's confirmed the symptoms
and taking natural meds to counter act the problems -so far so good !
by the way im totaly Allergic to Generic type drugs. fillers !
Generic are not the same as the orginial Non Generic medications are.

I found that most doctors within any hmo system ,dont take the time to help or try! most are just pill pushers - get you in fast and out the door.
if you have a problem , they do want ! they send you to Emergancy room
or to another Doctor for that issue. 90% of the time , you get little help
and they guess at your problem. and again we get the Ginny Pig rule.
Good luck
and hope you feel better.

I agree with everything you've said. I've been on this crap over two years and was put on it only because of an irregular heartbeat. I'm amazed at how the doctors pass this stuff out yet know very little about the side effects it causes for so many people.
I post here often because I am trying to help draw attention to the problems that people should be more aware of. I recently called AstraZeneca, the people who make this medication, and during the course of the conversation I happened to mention that I have random chest pains that are getting worse over time. The lady said that because I had mentioned a problem she needed to report it to their "safety control" and so she asked me several questions regarding this. I don't know if reporting problems directly to them may or may not help, but I feel it is worth a try. The number I called is 1-800-236-9933, or 1-800-726-7266 is another number I found listed.
After much research I am concerned about the side effect dangers regarding this medication that many people are just not aware of. I sincerely hope you are careful if you discontinue this medicine, because the reported 'rebound effect' can be life-threatening.

My dad was seen for double vision, and they thought maybe Myo...gravis, but then he saw an opthamologist and turns out they can put a prism in his glasses and no more double vision. - no myo ...gravis at all! Good luck to you.
