Male 46 I have been on Toprol - XL for about 1-1/2 years now. I was taking 25mg and I have had all the major side effects listed on this site. depression being the worst. About two months ago without my doctors premission I started cutting the pills in half. Three days ago I stopped taking the pills altogether, I have had some of the worst headaches in my life!! I figure this is just withdrawals from the Toprol. Everyones circumstances are different, however if your doctor is not helping you go find one who will listen! If anyone else has just come off this stuff please let me know you syptoms.

I really want to express my concern regarding your withdrawal. I have been on this medication for over two years, very much want to get off of it completely, but every time I try my blood pressure rises and I get sharp chest pains even worse than I'm alread having. I was originally put on this only because of an irregular heartbeat, never had high blood pressure in my life, but now I'm having to deal with it. Still looking for a doctor who has a clue, so far no luck.

I have posted here often regarding the 'rebound effect' that is reported to be possibly dangerous. If you are having bad headaches, you may need to be checking your blood pressure often. If the symptoms continue to be bad, I have read that you may need to go back on the medication temporarily just to be safe. The people who make this (astrazeneca) have information on their website that says sudden withdrawal can even cause a heart attack, so that really concerns me. I have also read that when you discontinue this medication you should slow down your activity level for at least two weeks just so you don't over-work your heart in any way.
I don't trust most doctors anymore, I'm 49 years old and times have changed so much from the days when you could go in and have a doctor actually listen to what you say to them. All I know to say is be careful, watch your blood pressure closely, learn about what these beta-blockers really do to us, and use your best judgement. I wish you well...JC
