I'm a 37 year old female and have severe asthma and allergies and have used pregnisone on and off for 30 years. I believe I am the poster child for the long term side effects. My immune system is shot to the point that my normal medicines for asthma (ventolin, advair) and allergies (tylenol sinus, claritan, visine A) and ezcema (elidel, hydrocortisone, etc. - - NOTHING works! In the past 6 months, I have developed various infections that the doctors have not been able to identify. My eyes are swollen and red with large amount of white/yellow secretions. Vaginal secretions. Face swollen. Skilled covered in a rash with ezcema out of control. Sharp pains in my back and stomach. Constant asthma. Abnormal hair growth. It is to the point that it is impossible to function and each doctor just wants to prescribe more pregnisone. I feel as if my body is a walking time bomb and it is so full of all the cortisone from over the years and has just decided no more. I admit that I too readily believed in the doctors when they would rapidly prescribe the pregnisone. Only now am I paying attention to the long term side effects. Has anyone had tests done to test their immune system and other organs for damage? Thanks and best to our pregnisone club.

I think it's bull-crap that your doctors cannot identify these infections. You should be very concerned about your back and stomach pains. Prednisone affects your pancreas. You do not want to mess around with that.. As far as your other organs, it affects them too.

Hi,

I think that I know what you are going through :) Kind of :) I was on prednisone for ten years :) I got off the merry-go round when i got them to cut out my large intestine. I had ulcerative Colitis so i had to take prednisone for that :)

I had the puffy face and the mood swings and the hot flushes :)

Have you thought about possibly going and seeing a naturopath? It sounds like the cortisone just isn't working anymore :)

I was lucky to find a naturopath and she helped me with my health problem and helped me get through the cortisone withdrawal and adrenal problems that came after being on cortisone for so long :)

You might want to go to this website too. http://www.cushings-help.com/intro.htm This is a site for people who have Cushings syndrome. You have basically what is called Steroid Induced Cushing Syndrome.

You will be able to talk to people who are experiencing the same sort of symptoms. It just helps :)

They will be able to talk to you about tests :)

A big hug :)

Hang on and take each day at a time :)

Good Luck :)

Talk to me more at paperworkfairy@gmail.com if you want to :)

Have you ever investigated the possibility of candida overgrowth? I used to have a lot of unsolved problems until I radically changed my diet. If you think you could have that problem I recommend a book by Dr. John Crook called "The Yeast Connection".

Hi, I experienced a very similar reaction to prednisone and antibiotic therapy and was later found to have yeast/Candida. I was put on Nystatin therapy for a year and a half with no positive results. I then tried Nature's Sunshine Acidophilus eight capsules a day internally, plus 1 capsule vaginally at night and am obtaining relief. I do not know if yeast/Candida is your problem, but it can't hurt to do the acidophilus to replace your friendly flora which is wiped out by most medications anyway.
Good luck and I hope you find relief.
Sincerely TM
