i had my done in june this year. i have a period that is longer then before. that will last 7 to 9 days. then i will quit bledding for 3 to 4 days and then i will spot till my period will start. i been very moody and sad with it. i also get acne. for the past couple of days i been getting numnus in my left hand from it. your not the only one. i'm going to get a hold of the obgyn to get it removed. it's just that some people body is having a hard time accepting it. i had my share of proublems with birth plans in the past. i can't take the pills or the shot because my body won't accept it. with the nuva ring i can't use it because of my medication. i got pregnant before with the plan b. which that don't work. now i can't use the iud. the only thing i know i can use is the spermicide.
I have had the IUD for about 6 months now. Barley this week I have put together all the side effects and now know that Mirena is causing them. I am 21 years old with no kids ( i have no idea why my doctor recomended this). I have been getting acne about for the past two months and HAIR loss, hair thinning. I thought it was just stress so I took a ligher class load and starting going to the gym 3 times a week, but it just kept getting more thin. After much online research i have found that many women are experiencing Hair Thinning at the top of their heads. I have also been getting really stomach cramps from this. I am going to take this thing out tomorrow. I cant wait. I hope all these side effects go away right away. Thanks for sharring
I got the IUD in November 2006. Since then I starting losing patches of hair (the size of a quarter or larger) completely to the shiny white scalp. After 3-4 months when the hair did not grow back I decided to call my family doctor who looked at my scalp and told me I had Alopecia Areata and referred me to a dermatologist. Alpoecia is an auto immune disease that causes your system to attack the hair as if it were a virus. The dermatologist looked at the area and confirmed it to be Alopecia Areata (Hair Loss) and offered Cortisone injections to accelerate the regrowth process and centralize the loss. She also referred me to a lab to have my Thyroid tested which was fine. The hair loss has been going on for over a year now and I have lost about 40% volume which is a very hard pill to swallow for a woman (or at least this one). The other symptons I was experiencing is aggressiveness, mood swings, depression and change in urine color (darkened). I attributed these to the hair loss and the stress of being told I may go bald at any time with out notice. I also visited my family doctor and requested depression meds which he did not give me. Finally, I decided in February 2008 to search the internet for "IUD and Hair Loss" and WA'LA' , look what I found. If you would like to see other stories- many more, check out the search, you may learn of some other symptons as well. As for me, I had the IUD removed today and feel better already. I will keep everyone posted. Keep your post flowing for the woman out there that are considering this thing. It may discourage them from this mental/physical abuse this thing caused me.
Good Luck!
I've had the Mirena since April '08, and over the past 2 weeks, I have noticed clumps of my hair falling out. If you barely run your fingers through the ends of my hair, 5-10 strands come out at a time, in a section, it's almost like someone pulled a clump of hair out. I'm sure you ladies can relate! I started thinking of everything that could be wrong causing my hair to fall out when it started a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't match up with any of the conditions. My husband suggested maybe it was the Mirena, and now I am convinced that this is the culprit, especially after reading hundreds of other stories about hair loss and the Mirena. And then of course, I had to add 2 & 2 together - I didn't have this problem UNTIL I get the Mirena! I am only 20 years old, this is very depressing for me. I feel like I'm in the prime of my life, and I don't want to lose my hair. :-( It feels very belittling as a woman, every time I take a shower I start to cry. This is not hair breakage ladies, every hair is coming out by the root, the hairs are not broken. So it's not a cosmetic problem so to say. I am consulting with my doctor tomorrow about having it taken out. I also have lived with severe cramping since I've had the Mirena, so bad it feels like my labor pains did & I double over. I also haven't had a cycle since the intial bleeding from insertion stopped. I was not told that hair loss was a side effect and didn't read it in any of the paperwork I was given. I feel cheated, robbed, & lied to! A woman's hair is her glory, & there's many, many of us being robbed of that! I am just waiting to see the advertisement on tv from attorney's wanting Mirena users to 'take action' - Same as a lot of other birth controls which I'm sure many of you have seen.
My name is Cindy, I'm 22 andI've also been losing my hair. I've had Mirena for over a year now, my daughter was born in September of last year, and when I began to lose hair I thought it was due to the change in hormones after pregnancy or the fact that I no longer took prenatal vitamins, but it's been over a year now, I brush my hair many times a day thinking that I just need to brush the dead hair out, but it still continues to fall out. I have to make sure to tie my hair up in a bun when I'm in the kitchen or around food. I can honestly rub my hand over my bedroom carpet and roll out a quater size hairball...of MY HAIR!!! My hair is everywhere in the house, I hardly wear my hair down now in fear that one of my hairs might fly into someones coffee or food in a restaurant! When I rub my fingers through my hair I get out anywhere from 3 to 12 hair stands, per stroke, and I can do it have 5 times in a row...that is a lot of hair that I'm losing constantly. I will defenetly be seekling an alternative!
Hi everyone just popping found it trying to find out if the mirena hurts taking it out as it hurt putting it in. I have been on the mirena since march 2008 I had my baby january 2007. when they first put it in I was going through labor pain i almost passed out and almost threw up.
I got my periods every month except in december it was 2 weeks late. Im not losing my hair but I have lost all confidence in birth control. I have been on three different pills , the patch , last but not least the body killer the shot. It stopped my periods but then 2 years later i started to spot between periods I have never went through so much pain in my life except labor which was exactly like that pain. and no body believed me of how much pain i was going through they said it was in my head. so back to the mirena I have everything from nausea to being so weak i can't even take care of my 2 year little girl. acne which i have never have in my life. I'm 23 so for me to always be a bitch and in pain and sick all the time is just crazy and i wish that i could sue those damn people that made it. cause they don't list any of the things that can go wrong and more and more woman are suffering from this sickening drug.
so how much does it hurt to take it out?
I have been on Mirena since the begining of Feb.I am 21 yrs old. I just had my baby in Nov. Because I was breastfeeding, I did not have a period. I was told that the Mirena would keep my period away. LIES!! Ever since I got the Mirena I have been bleeding and cramping. And sometimes I swear I can feel it. And when me and my husband have sex it sticks him all the time. I guess that's the birth control, trying to keep the big man away from the uterus. I am definintely going to get this taken out. I can't deal with this for five years I will just have to take my chances.
I had my baby in Jan 07 and had the mirena put in April 07. I immediately started having hair loss. My hair was coiming out in clumps and to make it worse it was falling out at my hairline. Comparing old pictures i would say i lost almost an inch of my hairline. However, the thought never crossed my mind that it was my birth control. I talked to my doctor first and he said it was stress and then talked to my hair stylist who said that it was perfectly normal after having a baby. She said that aburptly stopping prenatal vitamins also caused her to lose hair after giving birth. That made sense to me so I just delt with it. While i lost quite a bit of hair, it stopped falling out in such large quantities after about a year. As far as other side effects, I have been very moody (my husband would probably say aggressive). I find myself very easily aggrevated (more than before at least) and i have also experienced terrible acne. This was last year when i really took notice of it. I was 25 and had never had a problem with acne, not even in high school. Never wore make-up regularly but after my massive breakouts i wasn't comfortable leaving the house without being fully made up. I have been seeing a dermatologists so my skin has gotten better but i have been dealing w/ an unexplained rash on my back for about 3 months now and i would be suprised if this is another side effect.
I am seriously considering having it taken out, but i don't really care for any of the other alternatives for b/c....i want more children just not right now and this has been the easiest b/c to use.
we'll see!
I am 19 years old and I have had my mirena since August 2008. I had almost no problems with it other than an irregular period (at first I would spot for almost 2 weeks, then it just went away completely to the point where only the uterine tissue and a light brown discharge would come out for about a day, but no bleeding). To begin with, my period was only 3 days anyway. But, I began developing EXTREMELY painful ovarian cysts during my menstrual cycle, and I will be getting the IUD removed within the next few days. The longer I have it, the stranger symptoms I get. My period is totally erratic now, and the ovarian cysts are getting worse. Lately my breasts have seemed to be bigger, and I swear to god if I am pregnant after having the IUD (which is supposed to be more effective than birth control.. which I was completely ineffective at taking and never got pregnant) I will be absolutely furious! This IUD seemed like the best solution, but it has only caused more problems. I do not recommend it for anyone my age.
