I have been taking Simvastatin for 10 years, initially 20mg daily but increased to 40mg in the last year. I have noticed progressive softening of my finger nails- they split and break even with such minor trauma as fastening a button. I have not seen this reported elsewhere.

My fingernails also are showing these symptoms. They are now so thin there's hardly anything left to several of them. When I brought this up with my doctor she looked it up and said that side effect wasn't mentioned. Yet when I got the information about the drug it did turn out to be one. Has anyone's doctor given you an idea why this is happening and how to combat it? I am now taking 20 mg, my cholesterol is great and I'm thinking seriously of quitting.
