I JUST started Loestrin 24 Fe (day one) and have been reading many articles and websites (anything from the literature in the research journals to the Mayo Clinic posts). I have just read through this entire site and took in all the feedback from the women who have shared the side effects. I have NEVER taken BC until now. I am trying it to keep monthly bleeding and mood swings to a minimum. BUT, I see some serious side effects (depression, acne, weight gain) - these seem worse than just dealing with the monthly symptoms and taking some pain relievers. Should I STOP? Any advice from veteran birth control users? Michele

I am not a veteran; but weight gain seems to be the biggest issue...I have a teen daughter I am taking to gyno who is already overweight and large breasted; we want to control her 2 weeks of PMS and regulate her period, not even for sex....we have tried all natural ways as I am nutritionist but in this day and age, there is no natural b/c except condom or abstinence but it does not help with mood swings for 2 weeks or weight gain.......let me know b/c of all I have researched this is one with least amt of side effects....I hope it works for you and my teen........keep writing if you have sides.....i will look for any responses.....ok....thanks,

Hey there michele, i am not a veteran as well but i have tried two BC's.Loestrin is my second one, i previosly tried Femcon Fe. THe thing is that every person will have different reactions to different pills because no two bodies are alike. I tried FemconFe first and it was horrible for me. Massive mood swings and major breakthrough bleeding.. made my symptoms worse. Then i went on Loestrin 24fe and it seems to be working for me rather well. It has cut down my periods from two weeks to 5 days and lighter than before. I havent had any mood swings or other bad side effects and i just started on my 4th pack. So u can either not go through with it, or go ahead and give it a try and see how it works for u. Hope this helps.

I am definitly not a vetren, but I wpould just like to encourage you to give it a try, if you don't like it you can get off of it, I have no side effects and It is working great for me the negativity twords it is because people usually only take the time to write about it when something is wrong.

Hey-
I have been taking BC pills for 15 plus years. So I guess I may be a vet?!?!? I have taken MANY other pills before, I just switched to this and stopped because of all the insane side effects. Most of the others I have been on... no major side effects except some spotting. I was most recently on Yasmin (not Yaz) which was greatuntil the past year when I started getting numerous yeast infections (like 2 a month) so I was changed to this one... No good for me. I think my fav was Ortho-tri-cyclin (but not Low). The only reason I went off that was because of spotting... but the truth is I would deal with that any day over these side effects. Bottom line though, these pills (and any pills) effect everyone differently so you really won't know what type of side effects you may or may not have until you take it. And I agree with the Picapeach that people only tend to writer when things are bad (as in this website) but I am sure many people have great experences on this pill. My experiecne has been aweful, so I wouldn't recomend it to anyone... but that's just me and your experience may be very different. I hope that helps.

Wow - thanks veterans.

I have decided to deal with the moods I am in when I have my period and the massive bleeding and not try Loestrin for now. I am trying more pain relievers (I am not a medicine taker much) and am trying an antidepressant. As for blood loss, I am just trying to hydrate, take more iron and rest. I guess my body is telling me to slow down. Turning 41 was a shocker with all the tiring moods and low energy. BUT, I am afraid the side effects of the Pill would be worse. I am not worried about pregnancy (as a lesbian), so I can set that aside.

I will continue to research and comment online. I am currently trying a more "natural" approach and trying Estroven and Dong Quai remedies. I think you have to be on those for a few months to see the effects. More meditating helps as well. And I guess just being a major grouch for several days will have to do for now.

Thanks for all your help! I am not experienced at this at all!
Thanks fellow women warriors!
Michele
