I have been on Synthroid for about a year. I had high blood pressure and the doctor did a number of tests and found a thyroid deficiency. I started with 75 mcg and was moved up to 100 mcg. I have gained weight in the last year - at least 15-20 lbs. It is all in the stomach. I look like I'm pregnant. It is very hard to get rid of! I am exercising my tail off, and giving up snacks, sweets, etc, and it's not going away. I also never had problems sleeping but I do now. I'm glad I found this discussion group, because I see many others have had weight gain problems.

Glad to read YOUR posting because I thought I was going nuts. I've been on Synthroid for about 1 1/2 yrs. Prior to that I had successfully lost 30 pounds and kept it off with out much trouble. While I have never had fantastic hair, I have noticed a dramatic change in the thinness of my hair and I have gained about 12 pounds in the last 5 months - all around my middle. I am late 50's but find I have to eat less and less but I keep gaining. And despite exercising I have been unable to reverse what I fear to be a downward spiral. marylou.scott@gmail.com

i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism after gaining about 10 lbs in 3 months, all in the mid section as well. At first ithought it was just the "freshman 15", but when i thought about it, i was eating pretty healthy... I also ran out of clothes. I had to change my wardrobe, since nothing would fit anymore... it was really frustrating to have gained weight over such a short period of time without an explanation for it... And it's specially agrivating when everyone points out how chubby and fat you have become. This weight hasn't gone away either. i used to have an athletic physique, but now it is all gone...

My doctor listened to me, and was open to switching me to Amour Thyroid at 90mg. I've been on it for almost one month and next week I go back to the doctor to review my blood work. I've already lost about 1/2 of the weight I had gained in my mid-section, and the bloating is gone! I feel so much better. Now I have my fingers crossed that my lab results will be good as well.
