I have been on Lamictal for almost a year now and everything seemed to go okay until almost three weeks ago when I had to increase my dosage from 100 to 150mg and my Lexapro to 15mg. In the last couple of weeks, I have gained 7 pounds and I am really depressed. I have an eating disorder (bulimia) and because of this, I profusely purge my food in fear of gaining a dramatic amount of weight again. I am going to see my psychiatrist next week because all of this is going to cause me to crash.

Yes, it is important to seek profession help when you are experiencing eating disorders as well as depression. Might I also suggest that being actively involved in an activity such as a sport, exercise class, or some other type of physical activity could possibly help with the depression. Additionally, purging food may cause your throat to become infected, inflammed, and very irritable. I would suggest excercise along with a healthy diet. Be strong and overcome these obstacles so you can go on to lead a healthy lifestyle. Contact you doctor in reguards to the possible side effects of an increased dosage. Hope this helps, and good luck.

I would definitely check with your doctor. I think it may be the Lexapro causing you to gain the weight. I also suffer from an eating disorder and my agreement to start this medication was that it would not make me gain weight. good luck conquering your eating disorder, we can do it!

I was on Lexapro for a few years and over that course of time I gained 50lbs. I refuse to be on any strictly antidepressant drug because it ALWAYS makes me gain weight. I lost those 50lbs after being off of Lexapro. I am now on Lamictal and have gained 15lbs of those back. I went off of it due to the side effect of gaining weight and went into a severe depressive episode. I went back to my doctor and we decided that I should go back on Lamictal because I have had such severe side effects with other anti-convulsant or anti-psychotic medications. Lamictal has been the best fit for me but since I was severely depressed about my weight my doctor wants me to start taking topamax in addition to my lamictal. I am seriously so depressed about my weight that if I could be anorexic or bulemic (sp?) I know I would be but I just can't. However, I have great hopes that Topamax will help with the weight issues. Please do seek help. Ask about Topamax as well.

Topomax can be the answer for your eating disorder and luckily it is used off label too as mood stabilizer for BP. Ask your p-doc. I take Lamictal & Topomax. I've been shocked to hear everyone talk about weight gain with Lamictal. Maybe the Topomax is why I haven't understsood. I was very over weight and lost 70 lbs over 2 or 3 years due to the Topomax. My p-doc went to an eating disorder conference and learned about Topomax for binge eating. I also have migraines, so it has been a miracle drug for me. I also take Remeron (mirtazapine) anti-depressant which typically is a major weight gainer, and honestly is part of why I was so overweight in the first place (at least 25 or so of the 70). Even taking it, I kept losing with the Topomax and Lamictal. People have to remember BP is not curable, our docs can only help us make it better. We'll still have good and bad days. I'm sure glad we don't live in the day of no choice but Lithium and Thorazine.
