I am 36 years old with three psa readings in the last 6 months of 7.9, 2.3 and the last one this week after four weeks of Cipro, 3.5. Dr. wants to start proscar. Before I consider it, I want to know other men's side effects and feelings about this drug.

I am a 65 year old male, and have been taking Proscar/finasteride daily for over 5 years now. Although I am taking other drugs, I cannot attribute any major side effects to the proscar. The one minor side effect is semen reduction during ejaculation. At one time I was taking Proscar and Flomax together, and semen flow was reduced to zero. I am now taking Doxazosin instead of Flomax, and there is at least a small amount of semen with ejaculation. I probably will be taking this for the rest of my life.

Proscar is supposed to be able to reduce the size of the prostate by about 20% max. It also reduces your PSA by about 50%, according to my urologist. Hope this helps.
