I have just been reading the list of, what I am considering to be "possible", side effects from Dilantin . Doesn't everyone, whether on Dilantin or no drugs at all experience headaches, nausea, stomach pains or depression from time to time? After being on this medication for over 30 years there are some things which I've experienced. Just about everyone complains of hyperplasia but it has been my experience that if I maintain a clean healthy mouth, there is no hyperplasia. If, for one day, I do not brush my teeth, hyperplasia sets in immediately & it then takes a week or so to get it under control. So, brush, brush & brush your teeth. As far as memory loss or difficulty learning, I suppose it happens to everyone at one time or another. However I have graduared from high school with honours & became a registered nurse (top 5 in my class of 56) all while I was on Dilantin. The only true adverse side effect from taking Dilantin for over 30 years which I experience is that whenever I am tired, my speech can easily slur. I am very aware of this & it's become habit to pay close attention to my pronounciation & correct it so I may articulate normally. Not a big deal & a very small price to pay. I'm not one for pity trips or blaming my seizures or medications for my downfalls in life. I am so grateful to have my seizures under control & hate to think where I would be today if not for Dilatin. Remember, if you look for it , you will likely find it. So try not to look for all these adverse side effects (crutches)& see the benifits. We have enough to handle keeping this under control & educating the sometimes ignorant world. I took control of the epilepsy that attacked my system. I would never allow it to control me. Good luck to all of you. Sincerely :)

While you are trying to be upbeat and helpful, you are writing from the standpoint of one who has not experienced substantial side effects from Dilantin, including determing a dose that will remain stable. You are being too cavalier about this drug, with respect to those of us who have been devastated by it but who must take it because nothing else works. Dilantin can be very toxic and cause life-debilitating side effects, especially with regard to mental acuity, balance, fatigue, sullen moodiness that is difficult to alleviate with other medicine, peripheral neuropathy that makes it difficult to walk, decreased dexterity, vastly altered sleep patterns, extremely embarrassing unwanted hair growth, etc. All of this not only can substantially interfere with life activities (I had to give up my law practice which I devoted my life to building; the financial impact of which was catastrophic), but lends itself to isolation, lowered self-esteem and depression. People considering taking this drug should be careful to evaluate all of the potential impacts that may result.

Dear Picocrescent,
My sincere apologies. My intentions where never to downplay anyones symptoms. Apparently I am lucky at this point with the reaction of Dilantin in my body. God only knows what's around the corner?
I suppose what I am saying is, who's to say that my moodiness, fatigue & insomnia wouldn't still afflict me, if I where not on Dilantin? People who have never taken Dilantin have these symptoms. Dilantin has been a miracle drug for me. Without it, or if my levels slip, I go into grand mall seizures. So if these are true side effects that I am experiencing, they are mild enough to say "it's well worth it for me". Unfortunately we are all chemically different & again, I am very sorry if I upset you in any way.
I hope you one day find a drug that is compatable to you.
Good luck & take care.
Merry Christmas.

I have been taking Dilantin for 25 yrs.; and, it has helped with the seizure's; but, has casused many other problems; such has overgrowth of gums, mental acuity, caused problems with the nervous system; but, it is the only drug that I am not allergic to.
