I can't believe what I am reading. My son, who is 10 now has been on this med for 5 years now. The same amount of time that he has been dx with ad/hd. He started a new med for adhd this past summer and was doing wonderful, at the same time I had run out of Zyrtec for a couple of months and was giving him Claritin instead. Well we got a Zyrtec prescription on Oct. 1 and since then his behavior has went down hill. I thought that the adhd med had just stopped working, now I am wondering if it is the Zyrtec. The time the med seemed to stop being effective is the same time we had the Zyrtec filled. I am taking him off of it immediately. He has been angry, smart mouthed, disrespectful. Doesn't listen to anything I say. This summer and even until last month was wonderful. He did what I asked the first time, I didn't have to repeat myself, and he was calmer and nicer. I can't wait to see if this is the cause of a lot of his problems.

How did your son behave now that you have him off the Zyrtec?

Did you take him off Zyrtec and how is his behavior now?
I am thinking of taking my son off Zyrtec, but I feel that I need to find something for his allergies first.
He has been on Zyrtec for 7 years and on ADHD meds for 2 1/2 years.

My son is 10 yrs old. His behavior has gotten worse over the last 2 yrs that he has been on Zrytec. We recently had been told that he has ADHD and he was put on medication for it. The first one made him very depressed and the second one made him very angery. After the recent news reports on the allergy medication causing children to have suicidal thoughts I decided to take him off of the Zyrtec just to see. To my amasement he has improved greatly. Even his teachers, which I did not tell what I was doing, sent me notes about how well he acted in class and wanted to know what the difference was. I think it is still early, but I think that Zrytec just might be the cause of his decline in behaivor over the last couple of years.

I have experienced the same thing with my daughter, who is four. She started Zrytec because of allergy itching, and it worked better than Claritin for the itch and redness under the eyes. But then I noticed her behavior became atrocious. She became defiant and smart-mouthed. She also was much more emotional, angering and crying easily. I just took her off the medicine last night and need to talk to her allergist about an alternative. It's just too tough to see her act this way when she is normally very sweet and pleasant to be around.
