I am a nurse of 20 years and was placed on Toprol XL for super ventricular tachycardia (SVT) over a year ago. I was place on 25 mg dose after a stress test, ekg, echocaridogram and 24 hour halter monitor. I was not feeling any better and I was having periods of weakness, profuse sweating and being clammy. The cardiologist had me wear a 30 day event monitor and it showed frequent PVCs and runs of SVT. So he increased the dose to 50 mg. I continued to have the weakness, tachycardia, PVCs, extreme weakness, poor concentration and extreme periods of sweating with becoming clammy and some chest pain. Oh and I started having severe left leg pain that I had not had since my back surgery, so I went back to my pain specialist for treatment. I became so depressed, thoughts of life not worth living, poor endurance, not able to sleep in bed due to severe leg pain and increasing bouts of tachycardia, irregular heart rate, weakness, and sweating this is while at rest or working the symptoms remained. I forgot to mention that my blood sugar was increasing during this time to the point of in danger of being a diabetic. I decided to stop the Toprol XL after reading some of the side effects that are less common. I was able to sleep in bed for the first time in 6 months, no leg pain. I called my cardiologist and he told me my symptoms were not consistent with Toprol XL side effects or reaction and to double the dose of Toprol XL. I refused and changed cardiologist, one who listened to me. The result is I stayed off Toprol XL, after 5 weeks it is getting out of my system. No more sweating spells, cold clammy spells, extreme weakness, I feel part of life again and ready to go back into the world not hide from it, my blood sugar is getting back to normal. I am getting my strength and endurance back but have to rest some still, oh and I am losing the 25 pounds that I gained while on Toprol. I still have irregular heart rate and that is okay but I am on a new medication that really seems to work. Oh, and the spinal implant that I was to have has been cancelled because the leg pain is almost gone and I sleep in a bed not a chair.

I have been on this medication for years. The sweats and anxiety have never gone away. Now my blood sugar levels are running in the 200's. No other symptons of diabetes other than fatigue. Do you feel the high readings are related to Toprol or just the start of diabetes from age, weight, diet etc? I am not sure what is causing my high readings but I live off of fast foods and work at a desk and get very little if any exercise. I am just to tired and not motivated. I was clinically diagnosed with depression 6 months ago and take three medications for that.

I was put on Toprol XL 2 years ago for palpitations. In the beginning I took 50 mg a day then when things improved I had him reduce me to 25 mg. They did and EKG and an echo dopplar to make sure all was well and it was. The medicine did well until September of this year. I noticed day my index finger and thumb were numb. Went to the doc and he told me I had tendonitis. Then a few days later the other hand went numb. I got worried. By the following week my feet were so cold and my arms from my elbow down felt like they weighed a hundred pounds and were tingling. I was having depression, panic attacks, insomnia, and cloudly vision. My legs felt like jelly, and my joints ached, my muscles hurt and felt weak. It was pure misery. I went back to my doc to tell him. He blew me off and gave me xanex and told me to see a psychiatrist who could prescribed anti depressants. Oh yeah, he also gave me an arm brace for my "tendonitis" and told me I was sleeping wrong on my other arm. When I questioned him, he asked when I got my medical degree and said women have emotional troubles. When I asked about my feet he eluded to me being a hypochondriac and next week I would have a new ailment. I went on vacation with my mother in law. We were talking about what was going on.
She said she had had a similiar problem where she actualy used a blow dryer on her legs to keep them warm and dressed in several layers to keep warm at night. I asked her what med it was caused from and she said metoprolol. That rang a bell with me and I checked my med bottle and in August, the generic version of Toprol XL came out and it was metrolprolol...ding ding! When I came home, I looked up side effects on web and was amazed at all I was reading. I couldn't beleive it! I was beginning to think I had some funky illness they would name after me! But now I knew it was the med. I went to the pharmacy and they told me I was having placebo effect. That because I knew the med was generic I psychologically believed it wouldn't work as well and developed the symptoms. Which would be a nice theory had I actually read the leaflet before I went through this nightmare. But I had not. I was actually excited that my copay went down.I called the doc and they put me back on reg toprol XL but no relief from symptoms. I called back and they put me on atenerol and things seemed to get a little worse. I was having extreme trouble breathing...like my throat was closing up and a huge tightness in my chest. It hurt so bad. When I thought about this, I had this happen when I first started taking the generic in September but thought my difficulty breathing was allergies. I went and got a shot which opened up the broncholial airways and releived that symptom. I went back to doc one more time. He seemed angry especially at the fact I had been on the web.
Then he said he would just take me off of any med all together. I could tell he still did not believe me. I am pretty upset with him. I have been going to him for 10 years never bothering him for much of anything. So his treatment of me being a hypo really ticked me off. My point in saying all of this is, stick up for yourself. Had I given in at any point to what they were telling me, I would still be living the nightmare. They took me off cold turkey which I have read is a no no! It has been 7 days since I have had any meds. I still have issues with some numbness but nothing like I had before. My joints still hurt especially if I get cold but again seem to be getting better. The biggest improvement is in my sleep. Since being on the med I have had to rely on an herbal sleeping pill or tylenol pm to fall asleep but the last 3 nights, I have been fine! I don't know how long this stuff lingers but I am anxiously waiting to feel myself again. Oh yeah, my mood is like my old self a long time ago. I hadn't realized how I had gradually changed...Good luck and I will definitely pray for you!! By the way I am 39, too young to be dealing with this stuff!

I am also a nurse who was put on Toprol Xl for hypertension. I was also ion Topomax. I stopped the Topamax ans saw mt weight skyrocket 40lbs. I thought that it might be a rebound from the D/C of the Topamax but now i am wondering if the weight gain is from the Toprol. My blood sugar is now recently elevated and i wonder if this is from the Toprol as well. I'm seeing the cardiologist and telling him there must be something else. i am also on Avapro.
