I have been on lisiipril for 3 months and have a retching cough many times each day that produces clear phlegm. Cough subsides after expelling phlegm, but reccurs in a short while. I do not seem to have any sinus condition, and it doesn't appear to be connedcted to any lung problems. It wakes me up at night 2-3 times. HELP.

I am a 52 years old male, started taking this medication about a year ago. I have had throat issues ever since. I went to an ENT and he scoped me. No issues but sinus irritation. I never connected this drug with my problem. I never suffered from a sinus condition before, but this last year I have had the tickle in my throat with affects my ability to speak for a minute or two, have to cough the tickle out several times a day, and live on cough drops. Tried all the medications to treat this "sinus" condition both over the counter and prescribed, no relief. As of today, and after reading the many posts here, I am stopping this medication. I will report back in a month or so with my result. They tell me it takes about a month to get the drug out of your system and your throat returns to normal...hope so!!!

BINGO!!! Your symptoms sound a lot like mine. I went to Mayo Clinic and had a bunch of expensive tests for this cough. They told me Lisinopril could cause the cough, but I've had a chronic cough for years, and did not think that the Lisinopril was the culprit. The Mayo doctor put me on Prednisone for 2 weeks and in a few days the cough was gone. When I get off of Prednisone, the cough returns. I also take Advair, but it has little to no effect on the cough. The "retching" part of the cough in your original post caught my attention, because that is exactly what I have... sometimes I almost throw up. My wife now tells me my chronic cough I've had for years is minor compared to the new "retching" cough I now have. It also ruins my normal sleeping patterns, as I am often awakened with this darn cough. The Mayo doctor explained that the good stuff Lisinopril does for my heart normally outweighs the inconvenience of the cough.. I think I agree, but I'm going back to Mayo in a couple of weeks and talk with the doctor some more about this cough and see if there is an alternative to lisinopril.
