I had a kidney transplant a year and half ago, and had to take Prednisone as one of my post-transplant med's. I was on it for about 2 months and I went through a lot of the same side effects mentioned by other people, increased appetite and weight gain in odd places, sleeplessness, and acne. Then recently I had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic and was again prescribed prednisone for three weeks, but this time the acne is so bad it looks like a rash, and it's all over my back, chest, neck especially, and on my face. I can deal with it because I realize it's what I need to do, and I am grateful that there is a drug that can treat the symptoms from the allergy, but I am wondering how long it will take for the acne to clear up once I finish the 3 weeks? Does anyone know how long it takes when you've been on it for that amount of time? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks. Megan

Hi Megan

My husband was diagnosed with AML (acute Myeloid Leukemia) about 6 months ago, he has since had lots of chemo and a bone marrow transplant. He was on severe immune suppressive drugs to avoid GVHD (Graph verses Host Disease) - when the donor cells attack your body. Well he was off the Prograph for about 8 weeks when he got a mild attack of GVHD and they put him on Prednisone (weaning off now). He has been on it for about 4 weeks and he too has severe achne. Our Doctor informed me that the achne would fade within a few weeks from stopping the Prednisone. Just wanted to let you know you werent alone.

Thanks Celeste, for your response.
I hope your husband is on his way to getting better.
Prednisone is an amazing drug! Guess I can't really complain about the side effects when we see the miracles it can produce.

Best of luck to you and thanks.

Hi, i am so glad i have found this site in some ways but in others i wish i hadn't. like many of you, i was hospitalised and given prednisone by IV then went down to 40mg per day oral dosage. i have ulcerative colitis and had already tried it in a high dosage steroid form earlier in the year but it hadn't worked and my UC became too much. Anyway, it worked for me and it saved me from losing my bowel but i'm hating the side effects. i finished the horrible things about a month ago.

I had a few side effects while i was on them, bit down, insomnia, bloated tummy, but i hadn't relied on some of the effects taking so long to start or to get rid of. i gained around half a stone in the last few weeks of taking the steroids. i'm only 5ft and always been a little chubby so i could have done without it. it's like a normal heigh person gaining 2 stone.

I also have come out in really bad spots all around my body but mainly on my face, shoulders and neck. i've never had a spot problem before, not even when i was a teenager!

So now, i feel incredibly ugly to add to the depression caused by the medication. a couple of spots i could deal with but being fat and bloated as well? everyone keeps asking if i am pregnant.

I've been on my usual diet saviour plan 'slimming world' for 2 weeks and i've been incredibly well behaved on it. i was well behaved while i was on the steroids too! But despite eating sensibly and trying to get some exercise in, i've lost only half a pound. my doctor says it will take around 4 months to lose the weight but looking at this site, i'm terrified it's going to take forever. anyone got any tips?

Oh and does anyone know how long it takes to get rid of the spots??

Thanks in advance

Hi there- It's been over a month and I still have a few pimples on my neck and face, although the majority have gone away, and the moonface symptom is gone and I look like myself again. I'm losing weight by eating healthy and working out... lost 5 lbs the first week... only 2 the second, but it's moving in the right direction. Don't worry! It will get better and you are on the up and up... I can understand what you're saying about feeling ugly- I had to my 10 yr. high school reunion... not too fun! But, hey, you just have to keep looking forward- it's going to get better!!
