I had my Mirena IUD put in May 1st of 2007 and all the side effects that came along with it......the constant spotting, acne, itching breasts (which I thought was due to new bras that I had just purchased), nausea, depression (which I had to go back to taking Wellbutrin), no energy; tired all the time. My biggest side effect which I have not found any others to have is Allergies. I know it sounds crazy, but I have never had problems with allergies until a month and half after getting the IUD, extreme allergy symptoms, swollen glands, neck pain, very shortness of breath; to the point that I was down for a whole day here and there, I am having to take Allegra; had to get a steroid shot. Now that it is cold, I thought I would be getting break from the allergies, nope. I joined a gym hoping that it would help in giving me energy, nope.........I have talked to my Dr and the nurses that work with my gyno and they act as if I am making this stuff up. It is very frustrating when you know that your body has done a complete 360 in the wrong direction and everyone seems to think your crazy. Well I am having my IUD taken out as soon as I can!

I have been in the same boat fora few days now, I strted out having pain in my ovaries, and having nausea. I ignored it the 1st day and thought it was because I was finally going to start my normal period, I was wrong! A day later I landed in the ER, I was having shortness of breath, tingling in my hands and arms, heart palpitations, extreme nausea, I went to my obgyn the day before this er visit, and she basically talked me out of getting it removed, and put me on lexapro, an anxiety/depression med. I have always been very happy, outgoing and somewhat goofy, mI have a great husband and 2 boys, 8 months and 6 years old, I explained to my dr that I have never felt like this before, I had only had the mirena in for 4 weeks, I now havr the mirena out I requested it be taken out at the er, I am still having effects from the hormones I am somewhat depressed and I still have terrible nausea, My obgyn still thinks I am crazy! I know my body, and I am 100% sure this mirena caused me to have these effects, I urge anyone who is contemplating trying the mirena not to!!!!! It has been a rough few days, believe me, I am hoping that the hormone will excrete as my body regains composure, I now have terrible bleeding as well, but I am glad beacuse at least I know the hormones are moving out quickly. PLEASE DO NOT GET THE MIRENA, IT IS A BAD BC CHOICE!!!!!!! I hope this will help someone.

thank you thank you thank you. i have had the mirena now for about 2 years and for 20 months have had allergy symptoms which i had never suffered from before. cant sleep because of blocked nose, sneezing attacks often, asthma type attacks which do not respond to asthma treatments. i have had skin prick tests, been on low reactive diets (nothing but brown rice and vegies for 2 months - yuck), had ct scan of my head, chest xrays and last month when i checked with my doctor about the timing of insertion of the iud and decided it correlated with onset of my symptoms he totally disregarded the idea. thankyou for empowering me to have the confidence to make an appointment todayto have the damn thing removed.
