I took Toprol for almost 2 years then in Aug generic came out Metoprolol and I switched over. I was taking 25mg. After a few weeks, I noticed numbness in my index finger and middle finger. Then it happened in other hand. Doc said I had tendinitis in one hand and slept wrong on the other...I was also depressed and having panic attacks. From the onset of taking Toprol my sleep was disturbed, but thought it was age related. Once I went on Metoprolol insomnia set in. Then my feet went cold and numb and my arms were so heavy and tingly and my joints hurt. My right shin hurt to touch as well. Vision was cloudy and had trouble adjusting to light changes. Finally it dawned on my that the changes occurred about the time I started the generic. I went back to doc and he pretty much told me I was crazy, prescribed Xanax and a session with a psychiatrist! He switched me back to Toprol and I felt no better then he switched me to Atenolol with same result. By this time, my chest was on fire and I had extreme difficultly breathing. Called doc and he told me to stop cold turkey. I did and thought I was going to die one day. Throat closed up blood pressure soared. He stopped me on Nov 11 or 12th. I have been on nothing. Blood pressure is not leveled. When I first sit down it is like 140/93. If I wait a few minutes it goes down to 120/80 or a little lower. I was expecting to feel a lot better by this point in the game. I still have numbness in my pinky and ring finger and in my toes. If I take Advil it lessens to where it is not so bothersome. Anyone know how long this stuff takes to get out of your system? I am shopping for a new doc since mine know things I am a hypo. I am a 39 yr old female with no other health issues. Was originally put on for stress related palps.

Hello - I am so sorry for your struggles. I too am coming off Toprol with great difficulty - can you please tell me if your breathing has improved? I was on 25 mg of Toprol for 2 1/2 years then increased to 50mg for 1 1/2 years - I was also diagnosed with asthma in that time. My Respiratory Dr. said that Toprol was making my asthma BAD so wanted me off -- it has been awful -- and I was weaned over 8 days and have now been 5 with none - breathing still DIFFICULT. - thank you and GOD BLESS

my husband who was on 100mg Toprol xl then switched to generic had tremors, weird vidid dreams, short term memory loss..confusion, depression and most of the other adverse effects posted inthis website..the doc finally agreed (reluctantly) to drop dose to 50 and within a month many of the tremors and dreams stopped..I begged him to go to 25mg and again reluctantly he dropped the dose to 25mg..after another month, many of the other symptoms disapeared..he still has some confusion and memory loss but no where like it was.I am going to attempt to convince the doc to take him off completely..for some reason docs think you are nuts to talk against this "miracle drug" which it is for the purpose it is intended..however, if you are amongst those that get adverse reactions, they are usually horrific...my point is to tell you that in my experience it takes a good month or more for anyhing to come out of your body...good luck.

Vanessa and Vincencov, You are absolutely right when it comes to the docs...they refuse to believe you could be having difficulties from the drug. I had trouble breathing at first but that has cleared up...although sometimes it is hard to catch a breath. I took 50 mg Toprol for the first 6 months then went to 25 mg until Aug when they switched me to 25 mg Metoprolol. My doc took me off cold turkey..don't recommend that at all. I think I may have had an easier time if I had come off slowly. I still have numbness in both my pinky and ring fingers. Some minor cramping in right calf and occasional numbness in toes. Can't wait for all this to stop!! I stopped at the Walmart pharmacy yesterday and was talking to him about how long it takes to get out of your system and he said only a week. At this point I began to worry because I am still have a few effects but I keep telling myself that this all came about at the same time I went on Metoprolol. Scary thing here is I had the side effects and doc dismissed them as hypochondria! NICE!! Although the Walmart pharmacist was very nice and answered tons of questions for me...I just don't think anyone knows enough about the lasting effects of these meds on your body. Everyone of us is different and therefore we will all respond differently. My mom takes Metoprolol and has the calf cramping but that's it. I am just so done with this stuff...

Is anyone taking a "statin" (cholesterol pill, zorcor, pravachol, etc) with the toporal medication? My husband and I have blurry vision, terrible muscle pains in knees, back and a host of other problems since on medication. He takes zorcor-20mgs; toprol xl- 50mgs, lisinopril-10mgs & Bayer asprin 81mgs. We have been blaming the zorcor statin for side effects. Does anyone have any thoughts or info on this, Helene

I am so happy to read your postings!! I started taking Toprol 50 last February..I had bp of 130/80 which I didn't think was that bad but I weighed 253. The cardiologist put me on this and I lost 53 pounds. My bp dropped and my pulse sometimes was 59. Around August I began getting arrhythmias, tingling in the left arm and some of the symptoms you described. I've been to several ER's, Urgent Care, the Cardiologist and told I'm having anxiety and take Xanax.
I've never had all these problems until I was taking the Toprol for 6 months. I've decided to cut my Toprol to 25 for two weeks and take myself off of it since the doctor won't. today is day one. I'm getting a new doctor somehow and what really pisses me off is when people have these side effect the docs always say "that's very rare...you just have anxiety"...I don't agree with that bull. Most people know there body and know when something isn't right. But i did find some relief reading that other people such as yourselves were having similar problems.

My dad is on this medication and he has only been on it for a week. He feels like he is experiencing depression. I am concerned because if he is feeling this now and it is still early in the game should he just stop using it. What the heck? For every medication there is side effect that you have to take another medication for.
