Thank you for your support! It makes me feel so much better that I'm not the only one feeling this way! I'm also having problems with allergies, and of course never thought they could be connected to Mirena - we'll see if they get better once this damn thing is out! I have also had acne all over, plus facial hair growth, which is quite embarrassing. As you can see in what I just posted, I have finally found a doctor who is in my corner! I'm hoping things will look up from here! I wish you all the best of luck and let me know how things go post-Mirena!
Here's a copy and paste of what I just wrote:
I posted on here last week about my experiences. I thought I'd give a little update. I was supposed to get it out yesterday, however my stupid insurance requires that the doctor give a written request after I've had a pap before they'll "allow" it to be removed. When the nurse first told me this I was furious! I thought it was going to be hard enough to convince my doctor, and now we've got to convince my insurance. However, since I've had it inserted, I have moved to another state. That meant I was at a brand new doctor yesterday and didn't know what to expect. As she walked in the room, she was reading my chart and was asking about my periods. When I told her I didn't have any while on Mirena until two weeks ago, she became VERY concerned. She said that is not normal, and you should be getting your period, even if you have an IUD. She asked if I was having any other symptoms, and I said the most obvious one was my weight gain. I have gained, I learned after being weighed yesterday, almost 45 lbs in the last 6 months. She stopped what she was doing and looked me square in the eye and said "That is NOT normal! Have you ever gained that much before?" I told her no, never that much in that short period of time. That was all the information she needed to decide I needed this thing out immediately. She quickly did my pap and explained to me that with Mirena, it gives off different hormones than the pill. That is why when people have problems with the pill, they usually suggest trying Mirena. However, there are people who react badly to this different hormone. And the first obvious sign is when you don't get your period, especially several months in a row. She couldn't believe this was not explained to me and gave me the impression that she does not regularly recommend Mirena to her patients. (A stark contrast to my previous doctor who could not stop talking about how wonderful Mirena is and that "all" her patients love it). While I was getting dressed, the doctor went to the front desk and filled out the necessary paperwork to get this taken out. She also told me to make an appointment to have it taken out - which is Jan 8. What doctor takes the time to do paperwork right then and there?! I was very happy that she was taking me seriously, but it also concerned me that she was so worried about me getting it out too. I just don't understand how two doctors within the same field can have such vastly different reactions! She also told me that after I get it taken out I need to have bloodwork done about a month later to make sure my hormones are going back to normal, because if not, there may be other things wrong. (How scary is that?! Mirena may have caused other, more permanent problems!) Now I'm just hoping the paperwork goes through and I can actually get it out on January 8!
That's Great! At least someone is willing to listen.
I can't believe that you had to go through that much to get it out. Here in Australia, a Doctor at any Women's health, or sexual health clinic will take it out. Walk in, walk out. No arguments. That's all on our Medicare national health system - you pay nothing.
I also had the facial hair thing.
I must say, that my allergies ( both sinus and skin ) have settled down quite dramatically. My skin no longer itches when my husband touches me, and clothing has become bearable again. but the worst thing was that dairy products were giving me psoriasis-like symptoms. Normally my only sensitivity to dairy was dandruff on the scalp, so I would splurge with cheese etc occasionally, and just put up with it. But the Mirena thing played merry-heck with me in so many ways, it was just ANOTHER thing that went wrong.
I have now become used to breathing again, and only suffer when there is heaps of dust, or standing next to a shrub in full bloom, rather than suffering by just walking around generally with the Mirena thing.
Sorry, my last post didn't make sense in a place or two, there, as they took it upon themselves to edit the spelling of the slang, and naturally, they got it wrong. Hohum! ( they'll probably edit this into oblivion as well, so if anything doesn't make a great deal of sense, it wasn't me! ) Please let me know how you go, after you get it out. I have been FABULOUS. I didn't have any signs of the infamous " Mirena crash ",. I am SO thankful for that.
One of the other things was, that my varicose veins turned from one or two mild ones into heaps of bad ones... seeing as calcium has a lot to do with the strength of the blood vessel walls, I'm not surprised.
My only wonder is that it didn't actually kill me.
My wonderful husband has been so good through all this. He is six years younger than me, and it must have been like living with a 60 year old woman, not a thirty five year old.
Thank heavens we have no kids, and don't want any. I couldn't have coped. It was at the stage where he was doing all the housework as well as working full time, ( at least 10 hours a day), just so I would have enough energy to do my 4 and a half hours at work every day. Welshmen Forever! He is a lovely Taffy.
Now that I am past it, I can't believe how bad I was.
The upside is that I feel wonderful again, and am motivated to do LOTS of things, just because I can. Good old Silver Lining!
Make sure you do get the blood work. Do it when she says, and six months after that as well. I'd get a full work up done... everything. It's what I'm going to do. I'll be interested to see the difference. I'm going on calcium supplements now, as well as multi's and Iron etc. The doctor told me to hold off until we could see the difference in me post Mirena, without the supplements. it was definitely the mirena causing it, so now that we know for sure, I can do all the supplements.
Good luck with everything, and have a lovely season. Roll on January 8! Yay!!!
