Hello, about a week ago I admitted myself to ER because of terrible breakout of hives (never had them before) but was covered from head to toe. Doctor prescribed PREDNISONE 80mg for 4 days, and gave me an IV with the drug a week ago Saturday night (don't know how much was there), 12/29/07, I took my daily dose 80mg Sunday noon. I only slept about an hour or two. By new years eve 12/31, I have started getting cold chills, feeling unbearably cold, then the next day 1/1, I felt like I was 100 years old, all my joints were stiff, I couldn't get up from bed, couldn't sleep much but there is still more. By Wednesday I have felt even more stiff and hives were not going away, I went to the doctor (my stiffness went away after couple hours in the morning) he prescribed more PREDNISONe for another week, luckily I have stopped taking the medication after 5 days of 80mg, plus whatever they gave in in an IV but I still have what I think are side effects from taking it. Ankles are still sore, I cannot sleep because an extreme numbness sets in my left hand middle to index finger, it is no numb it hurts like an elephant is sitting on it, that is why I am still up at 4:30 in the morning. When I am up it just tingles. Not sure what to do but can't sleep at all for last 3 days and getting really tired. If I knew what Prednisone does I would never take any of it, I'd rather deal with hives oh and they still didn't go away, I have had them for about 10 days now, they did stop itching. Honestly I felt very very sick a day after taking it, I didn't associate this with Prednisone, until I found this website. Please if you can stop taking it or see for yourself how much you should take 80mg is definitely too much, for me at least. Did anyone have to deal with joint stiffness, and numbness how long does it take for it to go away. My wife says to to ER again because I can't sleep I am just very uncomfortable with the numbness and rattle in bed, but guess what they could shoot me up with more Prednisone.

I have done alot of reseach on Prednisone. Sore joints and unable to sleep seem to be a common side effect. Like you I feel 80mg is some what high doseage but I don't know how much you were given through IV. You say nothing about tapering off the 80mg or did you stop cold turkey?

Usually they give benadryl (diphenhydramine) for hives, I've never heard of prednisone being prescribed for it, especially such a high dose. They usually taper you off prednisone gradually so the side effects aren't so severe. But it can give some nasty effects, like sleeplessness, racing heart, cold sweats, and horrible headaches. Flushing your system with lots of water may help alleviate it and get you past these effects.

Hi, thanks for quick responses.

I don't know what dosage I was given in the IV I was taking it Sunday through Thursday 5 days, at 80mg then I just stopped.

Nobody told me to take it down gradually, I dont' really have any symptoms except sleeplesness, sore joints (getting better) but the worst is constant numbness pressure in my middle and index fingers.

At night I can't sleep because the numbness gets 100 times worse because hand is static. Tomorrow I am going to confront the doctor about the dosages.

I guess they gave me prednisone so that my body wouldn't be fighting the hives. I was covered head to toe, well still I am but it subsised, I am on day 3 without prednisone and feel so much better.

Thanks

The numbenss is only in the left hand and when my hand is static for long it radiates all the way up to my elbow. This was the hand the put IV through with prednisone.

Strep throat sometimes causes hives, especially in children. It can lead to rheumatic fever if left untreated. Just went through this with my son, but the ER doc knew hives could be a symptom of strep.

I have asthma, and have been taking prednisone (10 mg dose pack) for about two weeks now. I too am having numbness in the left hand (far left three fingers) that sometimes goes to my elbow on the side. I don't think this is much to worry about (yet) because prednisone makes you more nervous, so it is logical (not sure about medical) to think it would effect your nervous system in various ways. One of these ways is obviously numbness. I have not had hives or IV's, so I don't think your numbness is from that. It is just the prednisone side effect. Btw, my numbness just started a couple of days ago. I'm on a second dose pack, and each one runs for 12 days. Maybe the reason for the 12-day pack (that tapers off the drug) is to avoid side effects like numbness. Good luck and hope this helps you pinpoint your numbness reason.

I took prednisone for about 11 months at high doses like that. It was horrible and ever since I have got off the drug I have had problems with tingling, numbness and pain in my muscles. Stiffness is terrible in the morning and finger joints are slightly swollen, but gets better during the day. Sleeping is very difficult, I have to lay on my back with hands at my side. This has been going on for a year and no one can figure out what it is. Of course, they will not blame the prednisone.

I took prednisone for just three and a half weeks for costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage in my breast plate/rib cage) and the last week my neck and cheeks started to go numb and burn. I can't image what I would be like if I took this drug for as long as you guys... I have been weaned off the medicine and tomorrow will be my first day without it. I can not wait to feel my neck and cheeks again!!!
