Hi there,
I tried to wean myself off of the Toproyl also and my hands began to tingle so badly...I couldn't sleep. I have weaned myself to 12.5mg daily and I feel better. I would like to get off of this altogether but I am afraid now. Are you still having the side affects or did they go away? I am 48 yrs. old and no evidence of heart problems. I was put on for mild heart palpitations. I just wanted to know if you are over your symptoms and how long it took.
Thanks
Kellie
It has been a week now since I took the last 12.5 dose, and I am starting to feel slightly better. I have not had a headache in the past two days, and the numbness/tingling in my hands and feet are more off-and-on now instead of constant. The best news was when I checked my BP on Friday it was 130/85, so also down a little (still higher than before toprol, though). I am hoping these are all good signs that the rebound effects are fading. Good luck to you! I will post again later to give an update, and please do the same.
My doctor took me off cold turkey...DON"T do that...I trusted him and had no idea how dangerous that was. By the grace of God I am still here. I am 39 and suffered weight gain, trouble sleeping and irritability while taking toprol xl. When pharmacy gave me generic, everything went wrong. My trouble sleeping went into insomnia combined with severe panic attacks. Depressions came with crying spurts and doomed feelings, vision problems, muscle weakness and pain. Numbness and tingling were crazy and breathing was labored. I am only 39 and was put on this stuff to control palps. I complained to my doctor and he switched me to Atenolol. I took that for a few days and was having worse problems Looking back I dont' think it was the Atenolol but rather withdrawals from the toprol (metoprolol). I hate to say it but it was horrible. My sleeping returned to normal almost immediately but the numbness/tingling got really bad. It woke me up in the middle of the night to the point I would have to get up and rotate arms and jump to get feeling back. It scared me. It has been 2 months and almost everything is back to normal except some muscles weakness now and then and some "cold" sensations in right ankle. Sometimes my ring and pinky finger feel like pins and needles. My BP spiked for almost 3 weeks after getting off med. I was almost ready to give up and try a different med but was hesitant after this nightmare. Fortunately in the last 2-3 weeks, it is in the normal range occasionally rising with activity. I guess my heart was so used to having something regulate it, it forgot how to do it's job! The thing to remember is to trust yourself and how you are feeling. I am convinced now more than ever that no one knows the effects these drugs have on our bodies and you have to be your own advocate. I could never get a straight answer on how long this stuff stays in your system. My doctor said 2- DAYS bologna! The pharmacist said 2 weeks...CRAZY! Keep checking your BP and hang in there. It should get better but keep in touch with your doctor. I hope that helps. Sorry it was so long but it has been a hard 5 months. I relied on my faith a WHOLE lot!
ATENOLOL HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE! I DEVELOPED BRONCHIAL ASTHMA AND WITH ANTIBIOTICS AND PREDNISONE I STILL DID NOT IMPROVE. I JUST HAPPENED TO READ AN ARTICLE WHERE IT SAID ATENOLOL CAN CAUSE INTENSIFY BRONCHIAL AND ASTHMA TROUBLES NO WONDER I WAS NOT IMPROVING..MY DOCTOR TOOK ME OFF IT AFTER I SUGGESTED IT MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM.NOW I WONDERED HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO GET OUT MY SYSTEM?

Hello,
I too want off this medication - Toprol XL 25 mg. day. I have had nightmares so bad, scared my husband and kids to death. My blood pressure was very high and one thing I will say is that it is normal now.... but my insomnia is so bad, I lie awake listening to my heart beat fast most nights. I just turned 43, very healthy, just scared me why my heart was racing so fast, the 1st time it lasted 4 days. The cardiologist told me everything looks good after all the tests. Is this a hormonal thing, these palps, I wish I had good insurance and a great doctor. I just want to be healthy and not to have to wear socks to bed!!!! Thanks for all your information.
I am new to this site and after reading all the posts on Toporal XL I see that most of you are having palps. I have a prolapsed mitral valve that for yrs gave me palpitations. I was working for a supplement company and during a seminar one of the nurses mentioned taking CO Q10 for the heart. In 1996 I started taking 100mg of it and no palps! Have told several friends that have the same prob, especially at night, and theirs went away with CO Q10. I also take Toporal have the weight gain, cold extremities, but the past 1 1/2 yrs a sleeping problem. All professionals told me it wasn't Toporal but after reading these posts I am now convinced it is. Now I have to figure out, since I'm a heart patient, how to get off it.
My MD prescribed Toprol 50mg for my high blood medication, I was taking it for 6 weeks. I got the generic metoprolol, as soon as I started taking it I had tingling and numbness on my hand and feet. Since I have a thyroid problem, I visited the specialist and advised me to stop the toprol, because it blocks the circulation on my system. After two days of stopping the medication, the tingling of my hands and feet got worst. I'm not sure how long this will last. How long did yours lasted? thanks.
I have been on Atenolol 25mg 2x a day for 12 years and just yesterday had a discussion with my doctor about weaning myself off this medication. Have read the differents posts and I too have suffered many of these side effects. Over the years I have seen different doctors and almost always got the same reply when I complained about the side effects-----Atenolol doesn't do that or this is the first time I have heard that complaint. I never believed the replies then and I still do not now. My new doctor told me he would start weaning me off Atenolol once my blood pressure was under better control on Diovan 160mg----I have been on Diovan 80mg for about 4 years along with the Atenolol and the doctor just increased the Diovan to 160mg for better blood pressure control---hopefully the 160 will work and then I can start tapering the Atenolol very very slowly---tried getting off Atenolol in the past with not much success . Hopefully my new doctor will get me where I need to be .
