Been on Toprol XL for 4 years. I am 64 with SVT and mitral valve prolapse. I was started at 50mg daily and got relief but when breakthrough SVT started the dose went up to 50mg in the AM and 25mg in the evening. I still have breakthroughs but can wait them out. I did notice that my SVT or palpitations seemed to be triggered with an imminent BM. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia but coincidentally....it started with severe muscle pain when I started taking Toprol XL. I wasn't told that this could be a side effect.HMMMM When my insurance was discontinued (retirement) I started taking the generic due to cost. I haven't noticed any difference between the two. I also noticed that after a SVT episode I have a increase in urination....Toprol or SVT? I also noticed that I am very aware of an increase in a feeling doom. I have had ekgs etc and my heart is in good shape otherwise.

Hi,
My word, I can relate to so much of what you've described. I'm 49 and I've been taking 50mg for over two years for PVCs because they were so bad, but honestly the side effects of this medication seems worse.

When you mentioned the problem with pending BMs it made me realize I'm not the only one who might be feeling this. I've been trying to learn more about how our vegus nerve may play a role in all of this. Also, that nagging feeling of doom you described is what I've been living with for such a long time I've forgotten what 'normal' feels like anymore. And...the muscle pains, especially in my legs, are getting worse. I have random pains sometimes in my arms also. Last but not least, I too seem to have periods of more frequent urniation that last a few days and then ease up for a while. I can't remember the last time I've had a good night's sleep. I think what scares me the most is having random sharp chest pains, which seem to happen as this medication wears off a bit. I feel it may be part of the described 'rebound effect' that I've read about at the Astra Zeneca website.

At this point I'm just trying not to let this get the best of me mentally as well. If you read back through many of the posts here it is amazing to find out how many of us are sharing similar sypmtoms. I don't know if you have a good doctor or not, but to date I've not had much luck, which is why I've been searching for better understanding at websites like this.

Good luck to you, I wish you well....

It is always nice to hear you are not alone. I am sorry though that you are not feeling as good as I wish we would feel. It is un-nerving to have that fear of having an 'episode' as I am not insured at this time. I have had tests and they declared my heart to be healthy as of 4 years ago.....any doctor I have asked about the correlation of heart rate and BM's seem to think I am strange so I have stopped asking. Funny though...so many people with a heart rate problem seem to have this anomaly. You would think some medical professional would pick up the clue and do a bit of research...oh well!. Good luck with your research and drop me a line to let me know how it goes.
