I have read some of the board and would like to know if anyone else has had prolonged side effects after being off Prednisone for almost a year. I think Prednisone caused all my current health problems. Was on the higher dose 5 day plan for a severe inner ear infection. I stopped taking it after the third day cold turkey, which I know was wrong because of blurred vision and stomach distention so bad I thought I was going to burst (almost the same as when I was pregnant). The first 4-6 weeks of stopping it were pure _ ell. So many withdrawal symptoms. I went to my doctor and he said I couldn't possibly be having all those symptoms from the Prednisone since I was only on it three days (but it is the regimen where you take the higher doses/multiple pills in the beginning and then it lowers the dose each day). Every few days it seemed I was having something new happen - heartburn, sweating, headaches. Then my thyroid function began acting up (hypothyroidism) and glands seem to swell with my monthly cycle. I started having a daily dry throat. All my symptoms seem to be on my right side: blurred vision, dry throat, swollen lymph glands, ear pain, groin swelling. It is one month shy of a year when I originally took the Prednisone and nothing has decreased, only new symptoms appear. My doctor keeps treating each symptom individually and won't look at the whole picture. I tried acupuncture and it didn't help. Any suggestions/comments?

If you research Prednisone and I have and my conclusion is that the only thing it is (maybe) good for is inflammation. Otherwise it is useless. The list of possible side effects is a mile-long. From what I am reading on this web site and from personal experience most people are not being made aware of these dangers. You should DEMAND that your doctor look at the whole picture and if you are not satisfied you need to find someone who will before it is too late. I wish you well.

Your story sounds quite a bit like mine. A few years ago I had back surgery and they used Prednisone during the surgery to reduce swelling, I don't know how much, but it was one dose. The first symptom I got was an extra period, very heavy, crampy with pms and everything. Then after a week or so I started breaking out on my face, chest and back. I never get breakouts this bad normally. A week or two after that (maybe 4-6 weeks after surgery) I started getting the worst migraines I have ever had in my life. The kind where you throw up (I usually don't) and just turning your head to the side is so painful you would scream if it didn't hurt so much. I was getting those about once a week for three weeks or so, and finally called the surgeon and asked if it could be related to the steriod, he said yes. I just had more surgery in January and they used Prednisone and i got the period, the breakouts and the headaches, although this one was just one bad headache for about two days straight then a bunch of lesser ones, about every other day. The dr wants to do a steriod injection, but I am not going to, I would rather have back pain than the migraines!!!

I too was on Prednisone....strong doses for about a year.... for a blood problem......fixed that all up.....but 5 years later I have a thyroid problem. Doctor told me that when I was coming off the Prednisone.... my thyroid might not turn back on!! Not too impressed!!!! Now I am starting to wonder if it damaged my Pancrease too!! Again...not impressed. Can't seem to find a doctor that will admit that Prednisone can do all this......even years after you are done taking it. I wish I had known all the side effects before I started taking the drug.....I would have tried to persue an alternated route at the time. Seems that this drug can do permanent damage to you and I would have liked the chance to have decided which of the evils to choose!!! All the best. Kim in London Ontario

The fact that your symptoms have lasted over a year is concerning. I took a short dose, where it is high at first, 60 mg/ day and tapers off to 10mg/day by on the 4th and 5th day, where it ends. I was fine, but I did another dose of this a week after the first dose ended. The last day I started feeling really dizzy with low energy. Just wanting to lay in bed all day. This has been going on for 6 days with no subsiding. I really hope this feeling goes away with no lasting effects.

Hello
The first month I took prednisone at 60mg for 3 weeks I had horrendouse symtoms. Infact in a month I went from walking on my own to having to use a walker and still do a year latter. I have been on an off prednisone for one year.
The first month I experienced manic episodes, blurred vison, muscle atropy, confusion, edma, insomnia, heartburn, intense hunger and depression. The list grows as I stay on. I believe that each person experiences predisone differently, the higher the dose the more chance of sudden side effects. It helped my probelm for awhile but the side effects are so awful my quality of life has changed dreastically. Like many, I'm not sure I would do this again. I took predisone so I wouldn't go blind and that is the only reason I did because until then I did not use medication even with chronic pain. I used allot of meditation and Reiki and managed the pain without medication. I hope you feel better soon. I think your doctor's concern for all your symptoms is good, I know looking at them all together can be helpful. My doctor uses the big picture and it has done more harm then good in my case. Only you know how you feel about your doctor. Go with your gut feeling and you'll be right.
