Never been so sick from taking a drug ... was on this stuff for a week for a UTI--had usually been Rx'd Macrobid and had no reaction-why I got this prescribed I don't know. I dutifully took two the first day, then one a day til gone. That week I had headlaches, fatigue, body aches, itching--never felt 100%. Yes it DID get rid of the UTI, but at what price? Then got prescribed a 30-day of the sulfa to take ibe tabket "after sex to prevent bladder infection." Well, the ONE pill I took last Saturday was wiped out for 24 hours--spent 14 of those hours in bed with a pounding headache that makes a hangover look like a spa treatment. I am telling my provider I'll NEVER taking this stuff again. It's horrible!
My mistake--took TWO per day not one per day. It was the Macrobid that I took one a day after the first day. In any case, never been so sick as I was on the sulfa.
I'm taking this medicine now and not experiencing any side effects but its very successfully removing my infection. If you have any side effects from a medication you should contact your doctor and look into an alternative. Not everybody can take the same medicine. The paper work that came with my prescription says: "Seek immediate medical attention if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: confusion, persistent headache, neck stiffness... skin rash/blisters... joint pain/aches"
At 3:40 AM and on day 6 of this medicine, I am covered in a rash, miserable, unable to sleep and just waiting for 8:00 so I can call the doctor. I was prescribed two per day as treatment for an UTI and like lindasayyorkie, had never had any allergies to medicine. The UTI did improve within a couple days and after that, my main problem was extreme fatigue and joint pain (which I originally attributed to being sick with the UTI). The rash developed really quickly - went to bed last night with no rash and woke up with it covering most of my body. It has continued to spread today and is now appearing on my face. Good to know I'm not the only one who has experienced something like this, but too bad I didn't look up this information sooner!
DO NO TAKE THIS DRUG!! I HAVE NEVER FELT SO HORRIBLE IN MY LIFE!! I RATHER HAVE THE BACTERIA IN MY BODY THAN TO TAKE THIS CRAP!!
Me to I took 1 at 8am then 1 at 6pm...side effects were: Dry mouth,
panic attacks, racing pulse, low temprature, every time I tried to sleep I got a terrible adrenalin rush and could not sleep, palpitations. Never again..although I will say that some times UTIs can give these symptoms too,
I am currently taking this medicine and I am only a teenager because of a UTI. Sadly, I am also diagnosed with anxiety and panic attacks already. Since I can not swallow pills, I am taking it in liquid form-20 mL twice a day. I have never ever had any reaction to any kind of medicine before. Within 1 day of taking it -Since I also have a Viral Syndrome on top of all of this-I have had the worst headache! I am serverly light sensitive and I even went home from school early because of this pain! I am only a kid and I do have sensitive skin. I don't like this pain and I have to wait 9 days just to see my doctor! My family is saying that it is the panic attacks causing this and all-I can't sit down, sleep, eat, because of this medicine! I am feeling so insecure about taking it that I cry. My other pain medicine is $93! So, being an natural investigator, I typed in what I am taking and found this site and wanted others to know that I, too, am suffering! On my emergency papres it said " Septra" And when I look at my medicine bottle-I see some big long word and it's bad enough that I get headaches a lot already! Well, thank you for listening! P.S. I am only 16 and suffering because of this medicine! DO NOT TAKE THIS CRAP! IT WILL SERIOUSLY MAKE YOU MORE ILL THEN BEFORE!
I was prescribed this antibiotic medicine for a severe sinus infection two days ago and I am not liking the side effects. The nausea is no fun and it happens like a few hours after I take it as well as the dizziness and inability to concentrate. I did not notice any difference with my sleep pattern probably because I rarely sleep through the night anyways. But taking this medicine is hampering my ability to function and keep up at work.
Um wow. Every medicine has side effects people. One antibiotic is right for one person and wrong for the other. You're supposed to call your doctor AS SOON as a side effect shows up, not wait till they all manifest. At that point you probably shouldve gone to the ER or at least an urgent care. Anyone who may have to take this and has read this- I've taken it twice and I'm all the healthier for it. It's kept me out of the hospital. There's no more risk with this antibiotic than with any other. I mean, you guys all sound kind of ridiculous telling everyone else in the world not to take it because you handful of people had the serious side effects and chose to wait them out.
I started taking this medicine yesterday for chronic prostatitis. I have no ill effects, basically the original poster is allergic to this medication and that is why they are having all those bad effects. Listen to your body it doesn't let you down, you can only trust words so much. I am hoping it is going to cure me, I am taking it for a month and so far no problems at all. Only thing I notice is that is supresses my appetite, probably a good thing for some people lol.
Matter of fact I think I am going to start taking it three times a day instead of twice cause I believe it is wearing off to soon during the day.
Now you wanna talk about some scary antibiotics check out the floroquinolone family.
Wow is all I can say as I read all these posts and it made me wonder if what I had experienced was due to taking this medicine as well. Now I am not saying that it was actually due to taking this but at the same time I do wonder. I had a slight headache for 2 days that ended up one morning with a severe pounding migraine and vomiting that landed me in the hospital ER that even after given morphine for the pain it didnt even touch the migraine. I had this extreme pain for 2 days then it eased to a slight headache for another day. I also experienced the neck and shoulder stiffness and pain for almost a week. All I can say is I dont ever want to experience that ever again and just incase I will never take this medicine again.
I've been wondering all this week since staring the pills 4 days ago why I have been feeling tired and achy. I had added a 40 min. hard workout about 3 weeks ago and was feeling great until I went to the doctor for a sinus infection. Over the last four days, I thought the soreness and was from that - but it is different. The BIGGEST THING WAS MY HEART WAS RACING - EXPECIALLY AFTER I WOULD EAT and feeling panic attacks. More noticeable for me - Ms. Hyper of all times - energy beyond belief, I have been dragging. I went on-line to read up on the drug since all I could think of was this was causing it. I found this site and now I'm convinced it is. I'm supposed to take 2 pills a day for 10 days and have taken 6 and just took 1/2 this morning. I'M NOT TAKING ANYMORE and will call my doctor on Monday and get a Z pack or something that I know won't do this to me. Unbelievable. thanks for the insight. I'm done with these.
I developed a UTI and was prescribed this medication. The first day of dosing my UTI symptons were much better, but I had a headache. A day or two later I continued with the headaches and I was experiencing a lot of anxiety especially at night while trying to sleep. My worst symptoms is at night, I feel my heart racing, anxiety, and crazy racing dreams. I started with neck and shoulder discomfort on day 5, I felt terrible.
I was on Wellbutrin about 2 years ago and had similar symptoms with much confusion and crazy dreams. I am now on Prestique ,for depression, and I thought maybe it was the Prestique causing these symptoms. But after reading all the post here I now know it is the anitbiotic. The Prestique does not state having any of these side affects and the Prestique is doing wonders for me. I'm happy to know that it was only a temporary drug causing my issues and not the Prestique.
I Thought It Was Just Me Its Soo True The Headaches Are The Worst My Legs Were Itching And I Was In Cold Sweats At Night Unable To Sleep.... In The Day I Was So Dizzy And The Light Hurt My Eyes I Stopped Taking It On My Last Day This Medication Really Needs To Be Taken Off The Market!!!!!!!
Sounds like you were allergic to something in this drug or the tablet. Your friends were right about the Benedryll, but you should have called your doctor immediately. No antibiotic should affect your conscious rational to the degree you describe!

I took only 1 pill of this Sulfamethoxazole-TMP and within 1 hour I was itching and having pains in my joints. I quit taking this medicine and went directly back to my doctor. She gave me a shot of something, buut it did not help. I am sitting here at 3:55 AM and cannot get any sleep for the itching and pain. I will have to go and see my doctor again in the morning, and I hope she can help me this time. I am like most of you, I will never take this medicine again. I had rather have the infection than to experience the side effects of this drug.
P.S. Does anyone know how long these side effects will last?. I do not know how much longer I can take this itching and pain.
This meds gave me some sideeffects that too bad to say but i will find out tomorrow how it going to effect the rest of my life..
You had an allergic reaction. Not everyone does. I took it for ten days and just got cured of my UTI, nothing else.

I took this for ten days, had no side effects at all, and was cured of my UTI.
I had issues too! I came to this sight because I was looking up side effects. I'm miserable because I have been taking it since Thursday (it's Tuesday now) and I began staying up til 3am... then it was 4am and then last night it was 5am. I laid there and tossed and turned and it was impossible for me to even close my eyes and relax. My shoulders hurt as well, and now that I'm reading the responses I'm thinking it's a side effect involving my joints? I also itched all weekend! All over my back and legs.... that's normal for this I guess?! The sleeplessness is the WORST for me though.... then when I finally get to sleep I can't wake up.
i have been taken selfmethoxazole for 5days and now have developed the worst my vision has become blurred developed sores in my mouth along with the worst stomach pain in my life as of today i have stoped taken this medication still having some blurred vision. this drug needs to be taken of the market

I was put on this today to treat a cyst that was removed from the top of my head, but after reading the posts on this site and many, many others, I am sort of apprehensive about it. swollen lymphnodes arent so bad compared to full body rashes and ER visits. Anyone out there have an alternative one that i can request from my doc? thnx
I find this to be somewhat amusing, from my point of view. I've had terrible unknown allergies, for almost a year now, that makes me break out in full body hives/rashes. Yet, this seems to be the worst side effect to most of the people who posted on this page. I was just trying to find out which one of my new medications is causing my acid reflux to act up, and most of these comments are somewhat ridiculous. I was put on this particular medication yesterday morning to get rid of an infection for a boil between my legs and I have no plans of stopping this medication until all the pills are gone or I do have what actually seems like a serious side effect. I've been on so man pills that cause different side effects. Headaches and itching are normal to me, so I'll deal with those.
Same exact symptoms, except that rash covers my entire body. Eyes and throat are sore. Pain moves around to legs, arms, back. Feels like I have been pummeled all over by a baseball bat. Bottom of feet are sore and it is painful to stand. Started treatment on 09/02 and symptoms first appeared on 09/10, suddenly and fully developed. Saw a general practitioner and went to the ER...neither doctor had the slightest idea what is happening. No appetite, unable to sleep at alll, constantly thirsty. Mouth is dry with a peculiar taste. Never have felt so drained of energy. Hoping that the redness, itching and pain will subside soon. Saskiaj@aol.com
I'm on my 9th day of this sulfa drug. Allegic to Penicillan already. Had a staph infectin on my lip, don't know how I got that, but I hear if it gets in the blood, it can kill a person. I was instructed to take 2 pills/day. So on day nine, I started itching my feet, and sure enough there are red, blotchy spots. I see my MD tomorrow, afraid to stop taking the drug as a Staph infection can be quit serious. I also had a head cold for two weeks prior, but the past two days I've ached all over, no energy, have to nap in the afternoon, and have the chills off and on. In reading all this, I am now thinking I feel so crappy from this drug. But I agree with the others, that everyone has different reactions, and meds like these are an evil necessity in some cases.
I am probably having side effects from taking sulfamthoxazole/trimethoprim (SMZ/TMP). I received this antibiotic for a 5 day prescription. On day 4 I developed achiness and by the next day I had a fever and head to toe achiness. I had 1 pill left to take of SMZ/TMP and decided not to take it since I wasn't sure if I was coming down with the flu or having a side effect. I stayed home from work and by the next morning I felt better but not 100%. I went to work and my head and eyes still felt achy. That night before going to bed I felt an itchy spot and thought it looked like a rash but thought it was just an itchy spot. When I woke the following morning I discovered I had a rash from head to toe! I am already allergic to amoxicillan and the doctor at the time thought this drug would be safe to take. I guess not. I have phoned my doctor and waiting for a call back. I'm sure I have a rash due to taking SMZ/TMP. I have always been leary of taking antibiotics and now I am more leary. Just as leary as the new vaccine for the swine flu. I am not paranoid about our government, but I am becoming more leary of these so called drugs that are to help you.
Please never take this medication?? You will regret it?? The problems you are describing are an ALLERGY to sulfa mediacations, not problems others might typically experience. This is like being Lactose Intolerant and warning people to not eat ice cream because they'll regret it. I totally feel for everyone that discovered they don't react well to Sulfa's but pleae recognize it for that, that you have an ALLERGY to sulfa's.
