I am trying to wean off of Atenolol bc it makes me tired and I feel as though my metabolism has slowed down. I have been on it for one year due to a fast heart beat. I did not have hbp when prescribed and I don't now. I was suffering from anxiety due to katrina and quit smoking. sometimes I feel sick to my stomach. has anyone gotten sick to their stomach from this med. also, I found that if I take it at night I am not tired during the day but I do have strange dreams. my real question is how can I wean myself off this drug. I am afraid that if I stop it I will be somewhere and my heart will jump out of my chest.

i am trying to wean off of atenolol as well due to the fact i am pregnant. i am also on it for Hyperthyroidism. What I am doing is taking a third for 2 weeks, then going down to a half for two weeks, and then cutting that in half. My endocrinologist told me to take half for a week and then stop and when I tried that I felt like I was gonna have a heart attack. Hope this helps!

I have also been put on 25 mg Atenolol daily for fast heart beat. I have been on since September 2007. I also would like to come off of, as I feel it is depressing my heart function. I had prehypertension before starting Atenolol, but lately my blood pressure has really been driving me crazy. I cut my dose in half and take 1/2 in the morning, 1/2 in the evening. I recently went down to 1/2 tablet a day about 1 month ago, because blood pressure was going up I went about 3 days and then my heart started beating even faster than when I started Atenolol. I was pretty physically active for those 3 days and this was probably a mistake. If you come off of, gradually reduce dose and watched your physical activity. I would like to come off of one of these days, but right now am overweight and heart rate on atenolol lately is in 70's. If could get rate into 60's or 50's, I might be more successful. Hope you are successful.

I want to wean myself as well. I heard that we are lacking magnesium and this is why we have the arrhytmias or palpitations but first we need to do lots of reseach. I'm starting today. I have been on atenolol for a year and I want to get off. Look up magnesium and let me know what you think and then talk to your doctor, I am. Hershey
